Rubbish

In the area where Sue and Pete live the local authori-

ties are trying a new system: household rubbish is

separated into three bins. One is for kitchen scraps,

grass cuttings and other organic material. The other

one is for cans .. .. .
and tins. The third
one is intended

for rubbish which

cannot be recy-

cled. So far the --
scheme has
worked quite well.

A Contemporary Painter

This American painter, sculptor and graphic artist
passed first through a phase ofAbstract Expression-
ism before turning to Pop art. His first one-man
exhibition in 1962 in New York was a sensational suc-
cess. Taking his inspiration from comic strips, he blew
up images to a large scale. Despite his use of popular
kitsch, such paintings show an impressive mastery of
composition and colour.

What is the name ofthis painter who is recognized
as one ofthe most eminent artists in his field?

An Island off the English Coast

This island is separated from the English mainland by

The Solent. It is a very popular holiday resort and has

numerous historical towns and villages. The beaches
attract a great many bathers and sun worshippers.
The crossing from the mainland only takes 10 mi-
nutes by ferry, catamaran, Hovercraft or Hydrofoil.
The main town in this island is Newport, but Cowes
is probably better known because of the international
sailing regattas there in summer.

What is the name ofthis island?

The Pilgrim Fathers

A ship carrying 35 Pilgrim Fathers and 67 other
passengers left Plymouth, England, on September
16th, 1620 and arrived in Massachusetts, USA, 66 days
later. The people on board founded the first perma-
nent colony in New England. During the journey,
41 passengers signed an agreement concerning the
political system they would use when they landed.
This system is the basis of the American Constitu-
tion.

What was the name ofthe ship with which they sailed?

This place, in the county of Cumbria, is known as
being the largest nuclear processing plant in the
world. 15,000 people work in the plant which also
includes a nuclear power station which was closed
down in 1981. Used nuclear fuel rods from G.B.,
Germany, Switzerland and other European countries
are reconditioned here. In 1957, there was a serious
fire in one of the reactors which was only made
public 30 years later.

What is the name ofthis place which was known as
Windscale until 1981?

Cocktails

One of Lyn's friends gave Lyn a book on cocktails.
Lyn always enjoys drinking cocktails when she is
on holiday, but has never
considered making them
at home before. However,
after looking through
the book, she realizes that
it's not too difficult to
make some cocktails.
Tom agrees to pick up
the ingredients for two
different drinks in the
off-licence.

Road Works

Tom: They are digging up the road in front ofour
house again.

Lyn: What is it this time? Tel-
ephone, gas or water? ·,\ \ ''.

Tom: I don't know. Perhaps II'' '~
they arejust going to
put a new layer of
asphalt on the road.

Lyn: It's about time, too.
There are so many pot
holes that you almost
need ajeep to use the
road.

A Ship

This luxury passenger liner of the White Star Line
was the largest when she was built. She was thought
to be unsinkable when she made her maiden voyage
from Southampton to New York. However, in the
night from April 14th-15th, 1912, she collided with an
iceberg near Newfoundland and sank. Only 703 ofthe
2206 passengers were saved. In September 1985 the
wreck was discovered at a depth ofalmost 4000 me-
tres and photographed by an unmanned submarine.

What is the name ofthis ship?

Street Party

Lyn: There was a note in our letter box this afternoon
Tom: about the last preparations for the street party.
Was there anything
Lyn: important in the
note?
Not really. There
was a list of
planned activities
and a request to
bring along tea
and coffee, and
homemade cakes
and scones.

Travelling by Bus

A friend of Lyn's from Scotland has arranged to stay
with Tom and Lyn for a few days over Whitsun.
Since she cannot drive
and hates flying, she is
travelling by bus. The
journey is quite long,
but the bus has all the
modem conveniences.
It is air-conditioned,
has a video, and drinks
and snacks are also sold
on board.

New Clothes for Summer

Tom has been looking through his wardrobe and
discovered that most of the light clothes which he
wears in summer are
old and worn or at least
old-fashioned. He sorts
out all the things which
can still be worn to take
to the Red Cross. When
he sees what is left, he
realizes that he will have
to buy himself several
new shirts and trousers.

A Pop Group

This group of four musicians came to fame in 1962.
They started their career in their hometown Liver-
pool where they began playing in the ,,Cavern Club".
Their mµsic was the start of a completely new move-
ment in pop at that time. The group split up in 1970,
and the four musicians began to record on their own.

ft shouldn't be too difficult to guess the name ofthe group!

A Book Title

This story was written by Lewis Carroll. It is about a
little girl who follows a rabbit into a rabbit-hole.
At the end of the hole she finds she has arrived in a
strange land. She finds herself at a tea party given by
the Mad Hatter with a dormouse and the rabbit as
guests. Other characters in the story are the Queen of
Hearts, the Mock Turtle and a talking lobster.

What is the name of this story which is not just a story
for children?

You can use traveller's cheques

A Scottish Loch

This Loch in the south west ofScotland was made
famous in many folksongs. It is only a short drive
from Glasgow to the town of Balloch at the southern
end of this stretch of water. Here one can hire a
rowing boat or take a trip on a cruise boat. This loch
has no monster so it is perhaps not as famous as Loch
Ness, but a look at a map of Scotland will soon pro-
vide the answer.

What is this loch called?

An American Poet

He was born in Idaho in 1885, and came to Europe in
1908 where he published his first volume of poems at
his own expense. He was a co-founder of the lmagist
School of Poets advocating the use of free rhythms
and imagery. During World War II he broadcast on
Italian radio, supporting Mussolini. His literary repu-
tation was obscured by the tragedy of his last decades
and also by the difficulty of his work.

What is the name ofthis poet who is widely accepted as
a great master oftraditional verse forms?

Tom and Lyn have been attending dancing lessons
for some time. The end of the season ball is ap-
proaching, and Lyn would

on several dresses she
settles for a little black
dress.

Hairdresser: How wouldyou like your hair styled?
Lyn: We're invited to a dance, so I'd like

something a
bit special.
Nothing too
outrageous,
just different.

Soon the holiday will start, and Sue has already be-
gun to pack the suitcases. One case is full, and she has
the usual problem of
trying to close it. After
sitting on it and getting
one of the straps pulled
tight, she is able to click
the lock in place.
With the next case she
is going to ask Pete
for some help, as it is
heavier still.

A Tourist Area

We are looking for the name of a popular tourist area
in Hampshire which was created around 1079 by the
first Norman King, William I, for hunting. Later it be-
came important for the supply of wood for the British
Navy. Today there are many interesting things to see,
including the National Motor Museum or Smugglers
Way - an ancient route used by smugglers taking
contraband from Christchurch.

What is this area called?

An English County

This northernmost county of England has literally
more sheep than human inhabitants. There are many
places of historical interest here, e.g. Hadrian's Wall,
the most northern permanent boundary of the power-
ful Roman Empire or the holy isle of Lindisfame.
There are magnificent castles such as Aldwick, and
visitors to the area can also visit the famous battle-
field of Flodden.

J-Jt'hat is the name ofthis county ?

The Cabin

Sue and Pete have been shown to their cabin on the
ship by a steward. They have an outside cabin so that
they can look onto the sea. The passengers in the
middle of the ship are not so lucky. After unpacking
the suitcases they
take a shower and
change into some
more comfortable
clothes to sit
around the
swimming pool.
