MISSION STATEMENT
As Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, we believe God calls us to be a sign in the world of the power of the Eucharistic Christ to e ect unity and community among all peoples. Guided by the spirit of Katharine Drexel, we are called to share the Gospel message with the poor, especially among the Black and Native American peoples and challenge the deeply rooted injustice in the world today.

FOUNDRESS—SAINT KATHARINE & THE SISTERS OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
What does the mission of St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament mean to me as a Xavier student?
Essay by Stephon Guidry, class of 2007 Sponsored by Campus Ministry
Ms. Lisa McClain, Director
Reverend Je ery Ott, OP, University Chaplain
Associate Director of Campus Ministry
Saint Katharine Drexel took it upon herself to start a legacy that has changed my life.
She gave me the opportunity to be educated as well as take my life to another level. Moreover, Saint Katharine Drexel inspired people to give without ever looking for a reward. Learning the lesson of being sel ess is priceless and something that so many people miss. At Xavier University Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament transformed one campus with a mission of hope, equality, generosity, and most of all faith.
Saint Katherine Drexel gave money but what she also gave was hope. She o ered blind hope to African Americans,
Native Americans, and to the youth of America. By turning away from the norm and putting her faith in God, Saint Katharine Drexel created her own path. Guided by God and their devotion, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament were aided by angels in their mission to present the young colored people of the nation with an education.
I live in Saint Michael’s Hall which was built by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1955. I keep in mind that women—a group within America who were ghting for their rights and not just for mine—blazed a trail toward the future. ey provided shelter to strangers while they withstood the storm of social judgment. It is important that I stop and thank God for staying with St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. ese faith- lled women loved me before I was born. ey loved me and people like me so much that they built a university for us to better our lives.
Xavier University is so di erent from so many other institutions to me because there is a faith-base within the soil, in the wood, and mortar that made the buildings I study in. is inspires me to give back, to never stop giving of my time, my talents, and my prayers for those in need. St. Katharine Drexel, I believe is proud of how Xavier did not let go when hurricane Katrina happened. Xavier University came back and that was a sign to me to think beyond myself. As I re ect on these things, I know that by going to Xavier
I will be working toward a “more just and humane society.” Taking a note from Mary Church Terrell, “Lifting as we climb” seems to be an unwritten statement left here on Xavier’s campus.

A Day of Remembrance: April 16, 2008
During the early morning hours of April 16, a gunman went on a rampage on the Virginia Tech campus. By the time he was done, more than 30 students and faculty members were dead.
Many Virginia Tech students said they would never forget the day a fellow student gunned down 32 people before killing himself, but that the tragedy wouldn’t come to de ne their college experience.

-- Nikki Giovanni, University Distinguished Professor, poet, activist
Ryan Clark and Leslie Sherman were among the many Virginia Tech students who came to New Orleans during their holiday breaks to support us in our rebuilding.
e Virginia Tech tragedy has raised the complex question of security at our schools and colleges. How safe are they and what more can be done?
Xavier University, like many colleges and universities remember the Virginia Tech students and faculty with a candle light vigil.
