Communications Major Receives Research Award at Regional Conference
Xavier Communications majors recently presented four research papers at the Louisiana Communication Association’s 7th Annual Conference in Lake Charles, Louisiana and took home an award for the best paper. Spring Communications graduate Katie Spillman won the prestigious “Best Undergraduate Research Paper” award for her paper “Hurricane Katrina and the Media: How Coverage in e New York Times and e Toronto Star Shaped Public Opinion.”
“Communications students are competing at regional levels with their research and bringing home awards. It will help them get into graduate school” notes Dr. Park.
Allison Hudson, Ashley Anderson, Whitney Lanum and Mary Hill also presented their research next to professors, graduate students and other undergraduate students from around the state and country.
Xavier’s Center for Undergraduate Research supported the students’ research, which allowed them to present at the conference.
“Focusing research on media is becoming increasingly important because the majority of topics we discuss now go through a very small number of conglomerate corporations, which questions democratic communication” notes Dr. Park.
Louisiana Communication Association is a state organization supportive of research and communication issues.

e IBCS Community embraces the Gospel of Jesus
Christ and a rms the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Faculty and students explore these teachings and theological and religious traditions through an interpretative lens derived from critical analysis and re ection upon the Black religious, historical, cultural, and social experience with the goal of preparing students for more e ective ministry in the Black community.
As a program of Xavier University of Louisiana, the IBCS stands in complete harmony with the University’s mission statement as it seeks in faith to address and respond to the fundamental question of what it has meant, what it does mean, and what it shall mean to be Black and Catholic.
Founded in 1980, the Institute for Black Catholic
Studies (IBCS) o ers programs in pastoral ministries, religious education and pastoral theology, taught from the perspective of the Roman Catholic traditions as expressed in the Black religious community.
