Xavier Athletics — “ e squeaky sound of sneakers on the basketball court, the ping of the tennis ball as it hits the racquet, and the rush of wind generated by long distance runners eating up the miles — all silenced by Katrina last August — will soon resonate on the campus once again.
President Norman Francis announced that Xavier University of Louisiana’s storied intercollegiate sports program — cancelled for 2005-06 after the University’s academic schedule was interrupted and most of its facilities were heavily damaged by ood waters — has been reinstated for the 2006-07
school year.
“It was always our intention to bring back the athletics program as soon as it
was feasible,” said Francis.“We are pleased that the University has progressed far enough in our recovery to be able to bring back this staple of campus life.”
“Classrooms and learning are not all of what we do,” he added.“What goes on outside the classroom is so important to the development of individuals.” According to Calvin Tregre, senior vice president for administration and
chair of the University’s Athletics Committee, six of Xavier’s seven established, pre-Katrina sports programs were brought back: men’s and women’s basketball, tennis and cross country. e newest addition to the athletic program, women’s volleyball, was suspended inde nitely.
e head coaches for the reinstated programs — Dannton Jackson (men’s basketball), Bo Browder (women’s basketball), Alan Green (tennis) and Joseph Moses Jr. (cross country) — and assistant coach Darrilyn Broussard (women’s basketball) returned. All have been serving the University in other capacities during the interim.
While it is uncertain how many of the student-athletes — all of whom are still on scholarship — will return for the 2006-07 season, the coaches
have expressed con dence the teams will remain largely intact except for those seniors due to graduate in 2006.
Dennis Cousin also returned as athletics director.
e decision was
made to suspend the
athletic program last October after ood waters had buckled the University’s brand new wooden gym oor and caused severe damage to all of its locker rooms and o ces. e University itself did not reopen its doors until January 2006.
Pending the acquisition of a new permanent oor, the University has secured use of a portable wooden oor loaned to it by Jackson State University. Locker rooms and o ces in the gym have been gutted and are undergoing repair.
Cross country, whose season o cially began in late summer, led the University’s return to intercollegiate competition. Mr. Tregre said Moses has been involved in training and strength conditioning with individual team members — as well as other University students — throughout the interim, and he anticipates Xavier will eld a competitive team upon its return.
Xavier is a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

John Scott, renowned artist and Xavier alumni was awarded an honorary degree on May, 12, 2007 at Commencement. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1962, studying under painter Numa Rousseve (XU 1936), sculptor Frank Hayden (XU 1957) and Sister Mary Lurana Neely, SBS.
His art is diversi ed re ecting the dignity, strength and grace of Africans and African Americans. He brought passion and energy into the studio and classroom.
Scott’s enormous lifetime body of work – created in almost every conceivable medium –rightfully earned him a national reputation
as one of America’s most innovative artists. In 1992 he was bestowed “Genius Grant” status when the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship recognized him for his extraordinary originality and exceptional creativity.
His vibrantly colored, multi-layered prints and kinetic sculptures have heightened our awareness of the in uence of African and Caribbean music and dance to New Orleans’ distinctly local traditions. His large- scale, three-dimensional works brighten the landscape and buildings of New Orleans and six other major U.S. cities, while his more poignant paintings, prints and sculptures are prominently displayed in both pub- lic museums and private art collections throughout the country.
During the past 40 years, Scott has mentored generations of young artists, many of whom are professionally
active as both artists and instructors today. He inspired an appreciation and love of art in hundreds of non-art majors. But above all he instilled in all his students a deep appreciation of life and a deeper respect

Beating the Odds–John Scott
“Basically, I see Xavier as a place that is about imparting information to people, but more
important, I see it trying to imprint on the people
that it gives the information to that they have a
role—a responsibility to people. Not just to go out
and get a job and make a ton of money. Xavier is about trying to develop a sense of community. It’s people being concerned about people.” (1968 Xavierite)
