Baseball Cards 1983 District Champs
John Carmack Named ALL-STATE Basketball Cards Upset in District
SPORTS / 25
This was an excellent year for sports in Laurel Coun-
ty. Both the baseball team and the girls basketball
team won their district title; with the girls winning the
region and going on to the state. The track team got
some impressive performances by Chuck Stuber and
Margaret Bruner, Margaret who was only a junior
made it to the state and will be back next year to show
her talent. The boys Tennis team lost only one match
this season and both boys and girls tennis teams
placed entries in the regionals. In golf Mark Wyann
missed going to the state by only one stroke. All of this
years news was not pleasant as we saw Coach Bell
resign under the adversity of a losing year.
Southpaw Jeff Lewis Hurls No-hitter in First District Showing Eighth grade sensation Kelly Smith made the All-District. Region, and State Tourney teams.
Claiborne loses first match in two years Bruner Places in State Track

CROSS
COUNTRY
Cross country is the little known group of
athletes who brave the weather and rugged
terrain for personal glory. This is one of
the most challenging of the sporting events
our school offers. Scheduling made it im-
possible for us to get a picture of the com-
petitors, but we would like to recognize
these competitors.

CARDINAL FOOTBALL
QUARTERBACK SWEEP Gary Carson on the keeper.
This was a tough season for Laurel County football players and
fans. Bad breaks and one of Kentucky's toughest schedules led to a
disappointing J win 9 loss record. Even after the season ended, the
trouble continued as head coach Charlie Bell resigned. The Car-
dinals were not lacking in effort, they gave every game their best
shot. A change in coaches and a fine group of upcoming freshmen
will provide an optimistic outlook on next year's team. We still back
the Cards all the way!

COACH BELL DISAGREES DOUG BEGLEY ON THE CARRY
It is easy for a team to deal with a winning
season but the trials and hardships of a los-
ing season are often a struggle. This year's
Cardinal team had to withstand the pres-
sure of criticism due to their season.
Despite all controvery, the Cardinals gave
their all. Even to the best competition in
the state the team showed sportsmanship
and an excellent attitude were exhibited.
Laurel Co. is proud of the efforts of the
1982 football cardinals. They truly
possessed "A Touch of Pride."

BAD CALL! CARDINAL DEFENSE
STRONG PASS RUSH
Next years Cardinal football team will notice a major
cbange in their ranks. Troubled with controversy
Head Coach Charles Bell handed in his resignation.
The 1983-84 Cardinal team will be instructed by
Glenn Polly. Most of the Cards played under Coach
Polly at Laurel County Junior High and look forward
to next season.
While at the Junior High Coach Polly had several
outstanding seasons; including the number one rated
ninth grade team in Kentucky last season.
Strong new talent and a winning attitude should
provide a vastly improved record next season. We wish
Glenn Polly the best of luck as new head coach and
best wishes also go to Coach Bell, a fine coach and
person greatly admired by his players and students.
Most of all, to the Cardinal football team a champion-
ship season in 1983.
AROUND THE END Finally a chance to rest

BELIEF
he Laurel County Football Statisticians, favorably known as
Charlie's Angels, were very important to the football team.
hese girls not only supported the team, but also, aided in bet-
ter upkeep of statistics. This was unfortunately, the last year
or the statisticians. They will be missed by the football team
very much. Coach Charlie Bell made some last comments on
the girls, who were sponsored by Betty White. Kim Byrley -
he teams biggest supporter, very enthusiastic and
professional.
Diane Day - Always dependable.
Margaret Bruner - The UWit" of the team, a great angel.
Tiffany Claiborne - A "true" angel, always dependable and
supportive.
Rhonda Floyd - Always reliable and full of pep.
Charlotte Green - the epitomy of enthusiasm.
Gladys Evens - Very lady-like
Teresa Smith - Mature for her age.

After an outstanding season of wins and losses, Laurel County
was upset in the first round of the District Tournament by a
strong Somerset team. Despite the disappointing loss to
Somerset this year's Laurel County Basketball team proved to
everyone there are outstanding athletes in this area. Last year's
State Championship team graduated six key players including
four starters. Even with these losses the Cardinals had an ex-
cellent team ranked as high as number in Kentucky. Con-
gratulations to the Cardinals on another outstanding season
and for strengthening the basketball tradition in the area.
Next year's Cardinal team will also be hampered by gradua-
tion of five players including three starters who will be receiv-
ing their diplomas. This will open the way for new players and
prospects to build a name for themselves and the team wearing
the red and white of the Laurel County Cardinals.

RIGHT ON. • • • • • • • • • • • • • . TRACK
One of the schools leading athletes this year was girls track star
Margrel Bruner. Margaret was the only member of the Laurel
County girls or boys track teams to score in the regional meet.
Margarel's regional showing was good enough to win her a
showing at the state track meet. The state was held in Lex-
ington where Bruner took sixth place in the 3200 meter (two
mile) run, but she failed to place in the one mile event.
~largaet will return next year to once again take a shot at the
state track title.
This years track team thrived on youth, not one of the girls
track team members will be lost to graduation. The
underclassmen will build a strong base for future track season.
With the entire team back we should see a strong track team
next season. Congratulations to Margret Bruner for bringing
notoriety to this area and good luck to the entire team on a fine
season to come.

RIGHT ON. • • • • • • • • • • • • • . TRACK
The most noticeable characteristic of
this years track team was the youth
of its members. There were only
three seniors on this years squad;
Rick Baker, Robert Fields, and
Chuck Stuber. Chuck was the only
member of the boys track team to
reach the regionals. In the region
Chuck placed sixth against some of
the states leading sprinters. ext
years track team will feature basical-
ly the same faces, with some ex-
cellent young talent rising through
the ranks. Congratulations to Coach
Keen and the track team on another
fine season.

This years Cardinal golf team enjoyed ,
another winning season. The season ended
with a record of 8 losses 10 wins and I tie.
They placed fourth in the Hazard Invita-
tional Tourney and fifth in Middlesboro.
The only golfers to receive medalist honors
were Joel Prichard with three, and Mark
Wyann with two. Mark Wyann only
missed going to the state by one stroke.
