LAUREL CO. BAND
The 1982-83 Marching Cardinal Bane has had a fabulous year, and many outstanding
moments. Mr. Walker has taken several individuals and made them outstanding in their fields.
The Laurel County Band may not have always placed first in competition, but they have
always given it their best shot, and they will always be #1 in the eyes of the Cardinal fans.
Many excellent band members are leaving the band, but the winning tradition will be passed
on in years to come.
Jack Walker

Being a part of the 1982-83 Laurel Co. High School Band was just Wonderful. As
field commander, I had a closeup view of what it takes to make a band and also be
successful. But I'm sure I speak for all the band members when I say that all the hard
work is well worth it. I would like to express my appreciation for the support we
received from the administration, faculty, parents, student body, and to Mr. Walker,
because he's always there when we need him. Thanks for a great year.

This ~ear's staff had many, many, problems and changes to face.
Miss Debbie Bowling, was put in as this year's sponsor. For her first
year she did a fine job. A change in publishing companies also meant a
change in the way things were done and more confusion.
This year's seniors Kim Byrley, Jill Brown, Derek Greer, and Mitch
Howard found themselves relying on Knowledge from the past to pull
the staff along.
Even with all these changes the staff still found their usual humor
and smiled their way through their problems.

13th L.C.R.S. CLASS
GRADUATES
Despite the ominous overtones of a Friday the 13th graduation of the 13th graduating class,
nothing went wrong as 389 Laurel County High School seniors picked up their diplomas before a
standing-room-only crowd of parents and friends.
Lisa Bales, the 13th graduate to receive her diploma from Superintendent G. C. Garland, was
not overly worried about such ominous portent as she waited to enter the gymnasium hung with
basketball championship banners and packed to the ceiling with well-wishers.
The commencement speaker Earl Hays, President of Sue Bennett College, WARNED the
Grads that soon their education will come frpm a computer and even diplomas, or rejections, will
be dispensed from a machine with a press of a: button.
Speakers, he said, will come by the way of video display and the school administrat'ors will be
able to choose the subject and even the length of the address.
That, He said, will be in stark contrast with th'e commencements of 350 years ago when colleges
would schedule a week of commencement activities and have speakers morning, noon, and night.
Thus making the grads doubly happy to finally get the diploma.
After Earl Hays spoke, the Grads filed across the stage to receive their diplomas as faculty
members Jerry and Judy Brown called the name of each.
In an hour the whole thing was over and as music instructor Sandy Osbourne struck the first
chords of "The Grand March from Aieda" most of the caps of the men in class went high in the
air as a cheer went up and the class of 1983 was ready to face the world. Good-luck Seniors, we'll
mi•ss ya.
