Sabahan Mini Pocket Dictionary: A Guidebook To Sabahan Vocabulary CLARISSA HENRY 1
“A GUIDEBOOK TO THE SABAHAN VOCABULARY” Aims to create a compact and accessible resource to preserve the unique linguistic heritage of Sabah, Malaysia. This mini dictionary will feature commonly used words and phrases by the Sabahan people in their daily life, providing guides, and examples of how to people’s vocabulary, and a peek into Sabahan cultures. 2

AIK (Eh? [filler words/exclamation]) “Aik? Bukan sia sudah bagi kau ka tadi?” (Eh? Did I not just give it to you earlier?) AING “Kasi isi dulu nenek tu gelas sama aing suam. ” (Please pour grandma a glass of warm water.) (Water) 6

AMPAS AMPAI - AMPAI “Ampai - ampai tu kunci di atas meja pun kau tidak nampak?” (The key is clearly laid on the table and you did not see it?) (Clearly laid) (Slam) “Jangan ampas pintu, nanti pintu rosak. ” (Do not slam the door, it’ll get damaged.) 10

ANDU (A filler word [used to express sympathy]) “Andu ba... Berapa lama sudah gia kau inda balik Sabah?” (Aww... When was the last time you went back to Sabah?) ANGIN “Kesian budak tu sia tengok kana angin. ” (I feel bad, that poor kid got ignored.) (Ignored) 12
ANGKOL (Uncle) “Jadi beliau sudah si angkol. ” (Uncle has become a dad.) ANTAK “Jangan antak tu meja bah, nda tenang orang buat kerja. ” (Don’t slam the table, it’s hard to do my work in peace) (Stomping [things]) 13

BAH (1. Used to express agreement ; 2. Used to emphasize a point ; 3. Used to express annoyance) 1. “Bah, jomlah kita gerak sekarang. ” 2. “Dia tu bah, betul - betul campuran orang putihkah?” 3. “Pigilah bah makan kalau lapar... ” (1. Alright, let’s go out now. ; 2. BASAR (Big/Huge) “Basar juga tempat ni, senang oh kita sesat sini. ” (This place is huge, it is easy for us to get lost here.) BARUSAN (Just got the opportunity to) “Barusan sia terpijak Gunung Kinabalu ni biar lama sudah tinggal di Sabah. ” (I just finally got the opportunity to climb up Mount Kinabalu even though I have lived in Sabah for a long time.) 25

BEHAMBUR (Messy) “Astaga, kemas - kemaslah bilik kau ni, punyalah behambur kain kau sana - sini. (Goodness, clean up your room. It’s so messy with your clothes scattered around here.) BELANGA “Cuba kasi dulu nenek tu belanga, mau masak kuih penjaram. ” (Please hand me the pan, granny wants to cook kuih penjaram.) (Pot/Pan) 27

(Sweating) BESA (Usual/Normal) “Eee manada cantik oh, besa - besa seja ba ni sia. ” (No, I am not that pretty. I think I look pretty normal.)

BONGOK BIUT “Biut ni muka dia lepas keluar dari klinik gigi sebab tu ubat bius. ” (His / her face is asymmetrical after meeting the dentist due to the anesthesia effect.)
