THE BOYS’ BRIGADE IN MALAYSIA
1ST SARIKEI COMPANY
1969
• Company was formed with 25 Boys sometime in May
with Mr. Stephen Lim Tiam Hock as Captain, assisted
by 2 warrant officers: Mr. Andrew Law Chaw Ann and Mr.
Kueh Hoi Kuong. Rev. Lau Ka Ngie was the Chaplain.
• We are invited to take part in the Welcoming Parade for
the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Dato Pengulu Tawi Sli’s
visit to Sarikei. Full uniform parts were then borrowed
from members of 1st Sibu Company for this function.

1969 - pioneers
1970
• Company was inactive due to Officers leaving for further
studies & works in other places.
1971
• Company revived with 20 Boys having their first meeting
held on 9th May with Mr. James Singam Rajah as our
Captain with Mr. Daniel Chung Ah Brooke and Mr. Wong
Sing Ai being our lieutenants. Our chaplain was still Rev.
Lau Ka Ngie but he left us on transfer to other church on
31st December.
• Our Company was officially registered by National Council
on 7th July.
1971.. continues
• Assistant National Secretary, Mr. Eric Fawthrop visited
us on 17th & 18th October.
• Our Junior Section was formed with 20 Boys on 21st
October
• We had Fun Fair at Basketball Stadium, SRB Methodist
Anglo-Chinese at the end of December to raise fund for
buying our band instruments with a band display by 1st
Sibu Company.

1972
• Rev. Cheng Yang Kao joined us as our new Chaplain at the
beginning of the session. We had our first lady Officer, Miss
Agnes Yip helping in the Junior Section but she left for further
studies at the end of the year.
• Lt. Daniel Chung was selected to attend the Youth Camp in
Kuala Lumpur.
• We had our first Company Colour.
• First Awards presentation: Target I & II and 1 Year Service
Badges on 20th August.
1972.. continues
• We had our first batch of Lance-Corporals (NCOs) this
year with the promotion of Camillus Wong, James Wong,
Philip Chiong and William Lau.
• 11 members ( Officer & Boys ) were invited to Muhibbah
Dinner in recognition of our active services towards the
public.
• Our band, combined with the GB, 1st Sarikei Company
was formed at the end of the year.

We organised a Camp Fire in the Central Padang
for pulbic display.
1973
• Miss Tiong Ai Ho joined us but left for further studies at
the end of the year.
• First batch of Corporals this year when L/Cpl. Camillus
Wong and L/Cpl. James Wong were promoted.
• First public Band performance: during the Hari
Kebangsaan Parade.

• 4 Boys, Cpl. Camillus Wong, L/Cpl. Robert Ling, Pte.
Thomas Wong & Pte. John Wong represented our
Company at the BB’s 90th Anniversary EARF Camp in
Singapore from 3rd to 9th December.
• Captain James Singam Rajah left us on transfer to
Kuching at the end of the year.

1974-1975
• Lt. Daniel Chung Ah Brooke was appointed as our new
Captain. He left us at the end of 1975 due to other
commitments.

1976
• Lt. Wong Sing Ai took over the Captaincy.
• W/O Camillus Wong, founding Officer of 1st Binatang
Company and ex-Cpl. of our Company joined us as
Lieutenant on 1st October.
• For the first time, we had Officers appointed from the
rank & file when another 2 NCOs, Cpl. Vincent Kueh and
Cpl. Robert Ling were appointed W/Os.
• NCOs Council was formed for the first time.
1976.. continues
• NCOs Training Course was held from 2nd to 6th April,
conducted by Organiser of The Boys’ Brigade Singapore,
Mr. Edgar Ramalingam.
• We joined Christian Fellowship with JSCF team from
Singapore on 29th April.
1977
• Our former Captain, Mr. Daniel Chung was appointed
as our Honorary Captain.
• As from this year onward, we had full uniform church &
choir service on every last Sunday of every month.
• For the first time we arranged for our Boys to be
baptised in BB uniform.

• Organised a BB & GB combined sportsmeet on 3rd June
and 28 miles cycling to Binatang on 8th December.
• Drills & Band Courses were conducted by W/O Bonnie
Voon of 1st Kuching Company on 21st October and by
W/O Joseph Tin of 1st Sibu Company on 20th
November.

1978
• Organised Christmas Party for over 400 children on behalf
of our Church. Also from this year onward, we were given
the task of building the Christmas manger.
• We had our Company’s first Sergeant this year in the
person of Stephen Tee Soon Ming.
1978.. continues
• Best Boy & Best Squad Medals were introduced this
year.
• 14 Boys attended the first Sarawak BB Camp at Teluk
Bandung, Kuching.
• Lt. Camillus was elected as Treasurer of the Sarawak
Group Council.

1979
• Cpl. James Koh Tin Chee was appointed as our first
Staff Sergeant as from 9th February and he was
appointed W/O in August.
• Our first S/Sgt. in full S/Sgt. uniform was Christopher
Tiong Koh Hin.
1980
• Our Chaplain, Rev. Cheng Yang Kao left us on transfer
to Sibu at the end of the year.
• Lt. Camillus led 7 Boys to the Golden Jubilee Camp of
The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore from 25th December to
4th January, 1981.
Lt Camillus Wong led 7 boys to join Golden Jubilee Camp
at Singapore.
1981
• For the first time we had a patron Mr. Tiong Hung Ming,
2 Advisors, Mr. Lau Pang Hung and Mr. Wong Chung
Kang, all elders of our Church.
• Rev. Chiong Nguang Siong was our new Chaplain.
• Had friendly basketball & volleyball matches with 1st
Binatang Company, 15 miles cycling trip, telematch and
treasure hunt.
• Director of Junior Section, Miss Noreen Khoo visited us
on 17th April.
1982
• Camping for Juniors & new recruits was held at SRB
Methodist Anglo-Chinese.
• Joined in the 3 days Camp at Geligat Beach with BB &
GB members of 1st Sibu, 1st Bintangor and 1st Sarikei.
• 2 Boys were sent to join the Youth Camp at Belawai
organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports.
• Our Parade marched for State Level Agong's Birthday
Parade at Central Padang, Sarikei.

1983
• Celebrating the BB Centenary Year with Centenary
Barbeque, Obstacle Games, Community Services,
Visiting patients at General Hospital, Planting of flowers
& plants in front of our church’s compound, Spiritual
Retreat at Kabong, Thanksgiving Service (15 Boys were
baptised during the service.)
• Captain Wong Sing Ai and 6 Boys represented our
Company at the Centenary EARF Camp in Penang
during which our Captain received his Officer’s Long
Years Service, Bronze Medal.
1983.. continues
• BBM Asst. National Secretary and Awards Chairman, Mr.
Winston Kao visited us on 20th April.
• Celebrated our Band’s 10th Anniversary with a buffet
party.
• BB 1st Sarikei celebrating 100th Anniversary of BB
Worldwide with Chaplain Pastor Chiong, Advisor Mr.Lau
Pang Hung, Capt Wong Sing Ai and many others.
