A Mistaken Beauty

For centuries, spinels were mistaken for other coloured gemstones, most
notably rubies and coloured sapphires. This changed in the 19th century
when scientifc advances meant that spinels could fnally be diferentiated
from other gems.

These advances meant that many of the world’s most magnifcent ‘rubies’
turned out to be spinels. Among the most famous is the sublime 170-carat
red spinel that adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels,
that to this day retains its original erroneous name: the ‘Black Prince’s Ruby’.
Similar to diamonds – spinels are one of the few singly refractive gemstones –
they are known for great brilliance and come in a range of spectacular colours
with red, pink and blue spinels being the most highly-prized.

Demand and prices have increased substantially over the past 5 years,
and continue to do so as collectors diversify their collections to include
more than the traditional rubies and sapphires.

Lots 547 - 552 are some of the most celebrated colours which originate
from the esteemed sources of Burma (Myanmar) and Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
