The Five Elements

In many Eastern cultures, there is a strong focus placed on balance and
harmony across all aspects of daily life.

The Five Elements – Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth – and the associated
concept of balance and harmony are fundamental in the understanding of
these cultures.

Believed to be at the root of the universe and thus the reason all interactions
occur, these Five Elements are used as the basis for all aspects of life from
medicine to fortune-telling, to martial arts, with each Element possessing
its own unique character and universal order. According to the Yin-Yang
philosophy, each element also has the power to create and enrich as well
weaken, thus:

• Metal generates Water and chops Wood
• Wood feeds Fire and draws from Earth
• Water nourishes Wood and extinguishes Fire
• Fire creates Earth and melts Metal
• Earth bears Metal and drains Water

The art of Feng Shui (literally ‘Wind Water’) is based around the universal
