Greek jewellery designer IIias Lalaounis (1920 – 2013)
is known for his intricate handmade gold jewellery.
His instantly recognisable creations – worn by the likes
of Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy Onassis - were
inspired by ancient Greek history and he frequently
incorporated the artisanal technique of hammering
metal by hand to achieve the desired shape and efect.

Regal in Name, Regal in Nature

Sapphires have long been a favoured royal gif throughout the ages. Queen
Elizabeth II’s father King George VI and French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte
both chose this majestic stone for their beloved, while in modern times,
Princess Diana’s famous sapphire ring now adorns the fnger of Kate,
Duchess of Cambridge.

It is perhaps ftting therefore, that the term reserved for the fnest sapphires
on earth is ‘Royal Blue’.

To qualify for this revered title, the colour has to be an intense, richly saturated
and a homogeneous blue, also the sapphires themselves must be free of any
eye-visible or dark inclusions.

Weighing an impressive 16.89 and 13.71 carats, these unheated sapphires are a
strikingly perfect match in terms of their mesmerising colour and crystal.

Laboratories seldom confer the Royal Blue title on any sapphire, yet in
Lot 626, we have not one, but a perfectly matched pair of Royal Blue sapphires,
with three laboratories – AGL, SSEF and Gübelin all independently synchronised
in their afrmation that these stones are deserving of the term and the
rare appendix.

Prices for such items have increased greatly in the past ten years and with
demand for such exquisite jewels only increasing, while supply remains limited,
there is every reason to believe that this upward growth in value will continue.

Indian-inspired Jewels 印度風格珠寶

An Abundance of Charm

Natural pearls have always been a prestigious symbol of wealth and
status, with Ancient Greeks believing them to be the tears shed by
Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

Natural pearls are increasingly rare, and thus increasingly valuable.
Their formation is a lucky occurrence, with each pearl taking years to
form and requiring perfect conditions in which to do so. Statistically,
only 1 in 10,000 wild oysters will yield a pearl and of those, only a tiny
percentage ever achieve the size, shape and colour required to be
used in jewellery.

Perennially desirable, Jacqueline Kennedy famously said that ‘pearls
are always appropriate’ while Coco Chanel stated that ‘a woman needs
ropes and ropes of pearls’.

Lot 643, is comprised of 181 perfectly-graduated natural saltwater
pearls of the most desirable cream white body colour. Ranging from
8.75 to 4.20 mm, each pearl displays an intense and uniform colour
with rose and green overtones accentuating their extraordinary lustre.

Treasures from Burma

Unheated rubies from Burma (Myanmar) are the rarest and the most
sought-afer. Possessing an unparalleled crimson red colour and
complimented by strong fuorescence, the most vibrant examples
are attributed with the fabled term ‘pigeon’s blood’.

Both the vivid red colour and fuorescence are caused by a high
chromium content combined with a low iron content which results in
a distinct ‘inner glow’, an efect highly coveted amongst collectors.

Lot 644, is a pair of exceptionally clean, matching 3.34 and 3.02
carat unheated ‘pigeon’s blood’ rubies from Burma, which display
these characteristics and a homogeneous fery red colour with vivid
internal refections.
