The therapeutic worth of the Phylacogens

has been conclusively proved.

J^EFORE a single dose of Phylacogens was marketed

in this country they had been subjected for more
than two years to searching, patient, probing investigation

—an investigation conducted at the bedside, in homes

and in hospitals, by hundreds of competent and

disinterested physicians.

On February 22nd, 1913, the first Phylacogen was

formally offered to the medical profession in Great

Britciin.

To-day the growing mass of clinical evidence
comprises more than seven thousand cases. It shows

—83 per cent, of recoveries a record unmatched, we

believe, by any other therapeutic agent.

THE OXYGEN TOOTH POWDER

Late studies of the causes which produce decay

of the teeth show that beside the fermentative action

of bacteria producing acids, which eat their way into

the tooth, causing cavities in the tooth substance, it is

necessary for the production of caries or decay of the

teeth for the bacteria of decay to become fixed upon,

or attached to, the surface of the tooth, in order to be

able to carry on the destructive work. The necessary

fixation of the bacteria of tooth decay is accomplished

by the property which they possess of surrounding

themselves with an adhesive gelatinous substance,

which glues them to the enamel in protected places,

forming what are known as gelatinous plaques. It

has been found by experimental study that the most

active solvent for the gelatinous plaque is lime water,

or milk of lime, to which hydrogen peroxide has been

added. This combination of milk of lime and hydrogen

peroxide is spontaneously generated whenever

CALOX comes into contact with a decay producing

plaque, with the result that the adhesive material, of

which the plaque is composed, is immediately dissolved by the milk

of lime, and is chemically decomposed by the nascent oxygen liberated

at the moment of contact of the CALOX with the plaque of decay.

CALOXHence it is that is a scientifically constructed dentifrice that

is exactly adapted to the conditions which, the most modern views

as to the cause of dental caries have shown, must be met by a

dentifrice for the successful home treatment of this universal disorder.

Price of Calox to the trade, 9 6 per dozen

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING

Bicarbonate of Soda in making Mineral %[

PRODUCTION OF CARBONIC ACID GAS.

PROPORTIONS TO BE USED:

1 Cwt. Bicarbonate.

Minimum quantity of Water: 17 to 20 Gallons.

3| Gallons (say 68 lbs.) Sulphuric Acid of 167 Twaddell.

These quantities give about 58 lbs. Pure Carbonic Acid Gas.

THE METHOD OF CHARGING the Generator, and of running in

exactly the same as when Whiting, Chalk, &c., are used ; no agitation is requirec[

the very end of the charge. About 60 % more bottles (or half as many again) will

than with the same weight of Whiting.

A Generator capable of holding 1 cwt. of Whiting, 36 gallons of Water and
I

(1 cwt.) of Acid can be charged with 2 cwts. of Bicarb., .S4 gallons of Water andt

(li cwt.) of Acid. This will yield Three Times as much Carbonic fiam

as is given by the Whiting process, and consequently three times as many bottles pfjcH

an immense advantage where space is limited and when business is brisk.

It will be seen from the proportions given above that only about two-fifths ^
and two-thirds of Bicarbonate (weight for weight, as compared with Whiting) are
produce the same amount of Carbonic Acid Gas.

The proportion of Water can be varied according to circumstances. Withf
proportions the liquor from the Generator (which liquor is always perfectly cle;

from sediment) will, if run into tubs or into crystallising pans, crystallise in aboutiwoMj

at ordinary temperatures. The Crystals obtained are Glauber Salts, a readily saleaef^

in place of the mud from Whiting, so disagreeable to handle and so difficult to get U '
When the minimum quantity of Water is used, the liquor should not be allow i

in the Generator after work is finished, or the Glauber Salts will crystallise in it

hmdelay by having to be dissolved out with water, or otherwise removed, before a fw

can be inserted. If it is not wished to recover the Glauber Salts, fill up the Genc.t
water after the charge is worked off, or work with more water in the original charg

If the residual liquors are disposed of by pouring them down a drain, it is adM
to dilute them with water, or to pour water down the drain, either at the san '

or immediately after, the liquors, in order to prevent a possible blockage of the|ral
by crystallisation.

Mineral Water Manufacturers who use the above process might, with advai
their Glauber Salts to the firms who supply them with their Acid.

SPECTACLE MAKERS
# kjr« COMPANY.

In 1898, at the solicitation of many of the most prominent members of the opticaT trade, the Court of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle
Makers undertook to resuscitate those examinations of craftsmen which were among the primary objects for which a Royal Charter was granted
to the Guild in 1629. The examinations conducted by the Master and Wardens of the Guild at "that early day had reference to skill in the handi-

—craft of spectacle making, but they fell into disuse over a hundred years ago, and at the same time the "Company began to lose touch with tie

Opticians' trade a state of things which continued until within the past quarter of a centurj'.

The modern examinations, as now conducted by the Company, are suited to the enormous advances that have taken place in the application

of science to optical design and work. The syllabus was framed in consultation with such eminent scientists as Prof. Pilvanus Thompson
D.Sc, P.R.S., Dr. R. T. Glazebrook, M.A., D.Sc, P.R.S., Dr. G. Lindsay Johnson, M.A., M.D., M.S., F.R.C.S., Dr. H. G. Critchley, AI.A.. M.D., ji.S.j
and Dr. 0. V. Drysdale. And up to the year 1903 the subjects of examination were limited to theoretical optics (in application to various instru-
ments and to the human eye) and practical spectacle fitting.

HIn 1903 the Court of the Company, acting on the Report of a Committee of Investigation composed of the Right Hon. Lord -Vldenham
M.A., the Right .n. Sir William Hart-Dyke, St., M.A.. P.C.. D.L., J.P., Sir Marcus Samuel, J.P., D.L., the late Lt.-Col. Sir Horatio d'

Davies, K.C.M.G., V.D., and the late Mr. AV. H. E. Thornthwaite, F.R.A.S., with Sir G. Fau del-Phillips, Bt., G.C.LE., J.P., D.L., as Chairman,
'
decided to include practical sight testing in their examination.

Up to tha present date thirty-three ejraminations in all have been held under the diploma scheme of the Company, and the mmiberof

diploma holders is at present about 1,000.

The Company's examinations, under the general direction of Sir Wm. Hart-Dyke, M.A., P.G., D.L., J.P., are conducted by a board of

examiners of which the Chairman is Prof. Silvanus Thompson, P.R.S. The structure and functions of the eye are dealt with by ophtlmlmic
surgeons, and the other scientific and practical work is in charge of experts. The examinations usually take place in May and November, in
London. By the generosity of liverymen of the Company, money prizes are open to those candidates recommended by the examiners.
