Charles Gurd's & Co.

General notes: Gurd's is probably the most recognizable Canadian ginger beer manufacturer. Their
crown top bottles are everywhere, from the East Coast to the West. We have seen no less than 22
variants of the Gurd's bottle, and won't attempt to represent them all here. Gurd's also has bottles
listed in Saint John, N.B. Bottle heights are 9" to 9 3/4". Two huge display bottles were made; one
for the Montreal branch, one for Saint John, N.B. Potters marks include Buchan Portobello, Possil
Pottery (some of the green tops) and unmarked bottles. One rare one is marked "made in U.S.A.".
Top colours include every shade of brown from light sand to dark red, some shades of yellow and
the full range of greens. The greens seem to attract a price premium, more due to their
attractiveness than rarity. Generally, category 1. A few rarities stick out; these have been
individually noted on the following pages.

Gurd's Barrel Mug

We've seen a couple of these mugs, all Down East. Perhaps that's a coincidence? Again, these appear to be Category 1 items. Below
are two photos of the same mug.

Note: Extremely rare and a great display piece. This bottle is not
known in a green slip. There is a Maritime variety, shown in the Saint
John, New Brunswick section.

Note: This crest is very different from all the other Gurd's crests. The
bottle is also marked "made in USA" on the base. We've no idea why
the lip is ground all the way around. We have seen two; both were
ground on the outer lip.

General Note on the Milloys: One could probably
build a collection of 20 or more different Milloys,
as there are endless minor variations in the
crests, particularly in the scrollwork and the
collars on the dogs - note the number of studs in
the collar. To our knowledge, no one has
analyzed these bottles closely enough to judge
one minor variant as being any rarer (or at least
any more valuable) than any other variant.
Therefore, we do not treat unlisted minor crest
variants as being highly significant.

Note: Upon reviewing the various Milloy bottles, it
is clear that this was the last blob top before the
switch was made to crown tops. This circular crest
was carried over to the square shoulder and then
to the round shoulder crowns.

Note: This bottle comes with and without the "ring around
the collar." We have included photos of both for two
reasons: some collectors treat these as two different bottles;
and there is a legitimate question as to their purpose. Some
suggest that the ring was a guideline to let the glazers know
how far the slip glaze was to go down the neck.
