Drewry's Red Brewery, Edward L. Drewry, Proprietor

E.L. Drewry is the proprietor of the Redwood Brewery property, comprising the most complete and
extensive Breweries in Western Canada. Beer, Ale and Porter are made up to the extent of nearly
450,000 per year, giving employment to upwards of forty hands, while sixteen head of horses are
required for the delivery and handling of the product in the city of Winnipeg. A very large shipping
business is done all through Manitoba, the Territories and British Columbia. The superiority of the
Ales, Porter and Lager Beer have been so marked as to make Drewry's goods extremely popular.

E.L. Drewry is one of Winnipeg's wealthiest citizens. He takes a leading part in all that pertains to
the welfare of Winnipeg or the development of the Northwest. He is a busy man, his time being
taken up in looking after his various interests, as a member of the Winnipeg Board of Trade
Council, and as a prime mover in the starting and developing of the Manitoba Industrial Exhibition,
he has done much good. The Redwood Brewery covers an area of seven acres, lying between
Main Street and the Red River. Only the very best of materials are allowed to enter into the
manufacture of the products of the Brewery, native barley being exclusively used, and the product
of Redwood is equal to any of the best in United States or England.

Note: This bottle is suspicious for any number of reasons. The conical shape, the
incorrect lip, the poor transfer - all this information could lead one to believe this bottle to
be a modern fake.

That said, the bottle shown here was found in a British collection. What was it doing
there? In 1881, Wilson & Co. were grocers in Winnipeg, and one of the Wilsons was
listed as a Fruit Dealer. Fruit dealers were often also confectioners, and confectioners
often dealt in soda or mineral waters. Three or four Wilson Brothers bottles have been
found on the Prairies, and have sold from reputable dealers to knowledgeable collectors.
All to say, this bottle's provenance is still a
question mark.
