HOLME LACY. Archen:field; living, a vicarage ; value, £5 r8, with residence and I2l acres of glebe; patron, The Right Hon. the Earl of Chesterfield; vicar, Hon. and Rev. William Pitt Scudamore Stanhope, M.A., of Brasenose College, Oxford, who was instituted in I 872. The parish of Bolstone has been detached from this parish and united to Ballingham for ecclesiastical purposes (under I and 2 Vict., c. Io6). The church, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, is a fine Norman edifice of stone, with a substantial square tower containing a peal of eight bells, the gift of J ames, Lord Viscount Scudamore, in I 709; they were entirely re-hung by Messrs. Day & Son, of Eye, Suffolk, in I887, the estimate being £rzo. This ancient and interesting fabric consists of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and contains some handsome monuments to the memory of the Scudamore family. The late Duchess of Norfolk lies interred here. It underwent restoration in 1854, at a cost of £536, and the north transept was restored in r874, at a cost of £278. In I88r a silver flagon and chalice were presented to the parish, the joint gift of Sir H. Scudamore Stanhope, Bart., and his brother, the Rev. W. P. Scudamore Stanhope. In 1889 a very beautiful painted window was placed in the north transept, to the memory of the ninth Earl of Chesterfield. It was designed and executed by Mr. Edward Frampton, Buckingham Palace road, London. The earliest register is dated I 6 I 5. There is a national school for boys and girls, with residence for the mistress attached. It was built by the late Sir Ed wyn Scud am ore Stanhope, and has accommodation for 71 children ; average attendance, 38. The charities belonging to the parish are of £I8 yearly value. Holnze Lacy House is the venerable seat of The Right Hon. the Earl of Chesterfield, and is at present occupied by R. Oliverson, Esq. This mansion was for a long series of years the residence of the family of the Scudamores, whose ancestor, St. Scudamore, came into England with William the Conqueror. They settled first in Wiltshire, at N orton and U pton Scud a more, near W arminster, at the last of which are traces of their ancient mansion house, but removed to Holme Lacy in the reign of Edward III., after the marriage of Thomas, younger son of Sir Peter Scudamore, with Clarice, daughter of Lady Clara, of the family of the Lacys, to whom this estate originally belonged, and from whom the place derived its name. The Scudamores bear as their motto " Scutum Amorzs Div£m:" It is one of the so-called "mottoes parlantes," the name Scudamore signifying" Scutum Amoris." The arms originally were the cross patee fitchee, later the three stirrups. The first arms may have been given them in commemoration of some memorable action in defence of the Christian faith. Many of the Scudamores have been employed in distinguished offices, and some of them are recorded as eminent patrons of literature. Sir James Scudamore, father of the first Lord Scudamore, Viscount Sligo, in Ireland, is the legendary "Sir Scudamore," of Spenser in the fourth book of "The Faery Queene." John, created Viscount Scudamore by Charles I., was highly respected for his piety and learning, and was, in the year I634, sent as ambassador to France; he was also a character as distinguished for his loyalty as for his benevolence and charity ; and in the

HOLME LACY. civil wars he took so decided a part in favour of the king, that, having been taken prisoner, his estates underwent a temporary sequestration, and he was himself deprived of liberty for a considerable period. He died in the year 1670. The second Viscount Scudamore rebuilt the greater part of the present mansion about the commencement of the last century. He was grandson of the first Viscount, the eldest son of whom died in his father's lifetime. The surviving heiress of this ancient family was espoused, in second marriage, to Colonel Charles Fitzroy, by whom she had Frances, who married Charles, eleventh Duke of Norfolk, to whom she brought this and other large estates in this county and Gloucestershire. On the death of Frances, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, October 22nd, 1820, all the descendants of the first Lord Scudamore became extinct, and her estates devolved on Sir Edwyn Francis Scudamore Stanhope, Bart.; John Parsons, Esq. ; Mary, wife of Lieut.-General Burr; and Ann Susanna Davies the former, a lineal descendant of Mary, wife of Sir Giles Bridges, Bart., eldest daughter of Sir James Scudamore, Knight, and sister of the first Lord Scudamore; and the other three, lineal descendants of Frances, wife of John Higford, Esq., another daughter of Sir J ames Scud a more, Knight, and sister also of the first Lord Scudamore. This seat has been permitted to remain (internally) unaltered, as a perfect specimen of the style of building preferred by our immediate ancestors. We can still survey the apartments which Pope so frequently visited, and where he wrote his "Man of Ross," in the same state as they were formerly. The family portraits, and the elaborate carvings by Grinling Gibbons, in birds, shellfish, fruit, flowers, &c., but little inferior to those of Petworth and Chatsworth, are still a part of their venerable ornaments. A mansion like this, preserved in a complete state from modern alterations, may be ranked among our national curiosities. In the saloon is a very conspicuous portrait of Sir James Scudamore, equipped for a tournament. The apartments are decorated with many valuable paintings by Vandyck, Jansen, Holbein, and other eminent artists. The extensive grounds of this estate are very pleasant. The old garden on the south front was formed on the model of Hampton court, in Middlesex, and displays a very spacious terrace. The yew trees, which are disposed in straight lines, very nearly resemble the cypresses of a Turkish cemetery. The situation of the mansion is on rising ground, commanding a beautiful view in the front. Near the vicarage house is a portion of a remarkable pear tree, which, according to records dated 1776, yielded from fourteen to sixteen hogsheads of perry, of Ioo gallons each, and is accounted for as. follows : a large branch having been broken by the wind, its head fell to the ground, the butt still adhering to the trunk ; some time after, it appeared to have struck into the ground, taken root, and formed a scion. Willing to encourage this lusus natura:, the incumbent gave orders for other layers to be made from the tree in a similar manner, which became rooted, and bore fruit. PosTAL REGULATIONS. HOLMER AND SHELWICK . • • the part of Breinton within the borough of Hereford was amalgamated with Huntington. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and Miss Bulmer are the chief landowners. The soil is light ; subsoil, gravel and clay; produce, wheat, barley, hops, fruit, &c. Bricks and tiles are manufactured here. Holmer is in the diocese, archdeaconry, and rural deanery of Hereford ; living, a vicarage, with the chapelry of Huntington annexed; value, £279, with residence and I 2f acres of glebe ; patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Hereford; vicar, Rev. Edward Arthur Evans, B.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, who was instituted in 186g. The Rev. ]. ]. Morgan is the curate. In 1865 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners granted £120 to be added to Holmer living, subject to the employment of a curate. The church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, is an ancient structure in the Gothic style of architecture, with nave, chancel, and a detached tower on the south side. It is not improbable that the tower, detached from the rest of the church like others in Herefordshire (viz., Bosbury, Garway, Ledbury, Pembridge, Richard's Castle, and Yarpole), was intended for purposes of defence against the Welsh; that after the upper part had been destroyed, a short spire was erected on the remaining portion, which was removed and the present timber work erected at the end of the 16th century, to make room for the five bells -the earliest bearing date I 6o9. Three lancet windows in the chancel were filled with rich glass in I865, by Hardman, of Birmingham, in memory of the late Charles Bulmer, Esq., who for many years was an extensive landowner in this parish. An additional piece of ground for burials was consecrated by the Lord Bishop, on October 23rd, 1873. The parish registers begin with the year 1712. The national schools at \Videmarsh in this parish will accommodate 253 children ; the average attendance being 225. The cost was £1,4001 exclusive of the value of the site. There are several charities belonging to the parish. Messrs. God win and Hewitt's Encaustic Tile Works are situated in this parish, about a mile and a half from the centre of the city of Hereford, and contiguous to the Great Western railway. There are several handsome residences in this parish : Holmer Park (J. Corner, Esq.), Munstone House (R. S. Paterson, Esq.), Cope!ands (Mrs. Jenkins), The Laurels (Mr. Lee), Holmer Hall (T. E. Yeld, Esq.), and Westjield House (Mrs. Stillingfleet). Huntington is a township and chapelry, distant about 1 mile S.W. of Holmer church, and 2 miles N. W. of the city of Hereford. The Midland railway (Hereford, Hay, and Brecon branch) runs through a portion of the township. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and chief owners of the soil. Miss Bulmer, and James Tudor Hereford, Esq., are also landowners. The chapel of ease is a neat stone building, rebuilt in 1850 at a cost of £8oo. The living is united to Holmer vicarage. The great tithes, amounting to £52 Ios., are held by the Dean and Chapter of Hereford; and the small tithes, amounting to £35 17s. 6d., by the Rev. E. A. Evans, B.A. Huntz'ngton Court is the residence of Thomas Rogers, Esq. At the angle of the road, about 1 mile to the N.W.

HOLMER AND SHELWICK. of Hereford, is a stone cross, called the Whzie Cross, the base of which consists of an hexagonal flight of seven steps, gradually decreasing as they ascend; the height of the remaining stage of the shaft is 6 feet, and the breadth of each face 2 feet, exclusive of a pillar between each, which is surmounted with an embattled parapet. It was repaired and pointed at the expense of the late Right Hon. and Ven. Archdeacon Lord Saye and Sele, D.C.L. The erection of this cross is, by tradition, ascribed to Bishop Cantilupe, who is said to have been returning from his palace at Sugwas to Hereford, when the bells of his cathedral began ringing without any apparent human agency, and that in commemoration of such a miraculous event he erected a cross on the spot where the sounds had first attracted his notice. Mr. Duncumb, in his " History of Hereford," thus describes it, giving a much more probable reason for its construction : "In the year 1347 an infectious disorder ravaged the whole county of Hereford, and, as usual, displayed the greatest malignity in the places most numerously inhabited; this created the necessity for removing the markets from Hereford, and the spot of waste ground on which the cross now stands was applied to that purpose; in memory of this event, Dr. Lewis Charlton, who was consecrated Bishop of Hereford a few years afterwards, caused this cross to be erected." The Shrewsbury and Hereford railway passes under the hill by a tunnel I ,309 yards long, the only tunnel of any consequence on the line ; and the main road between Hereford and Leominster passes over it at a distance of more than 2 miles. A new tunnel is being constructed by the joint railway companies to accommodate the largely-increasing traffic by this route; Mr. R. E. Johnson, of Birkenhead, is the engineer. Hope is in the diocese and archdeaconry of Hereford and rural deanery of Leominster; living, a vicarage; value, £rso, with residence and 12 acres of glebe; patron, ]. H. Arkwright, Esq.; vicar, Rev. L. H. Evans, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge, who was instituted in 1888. The church, dedicated to St. Mary the V£rgin, is a stone edifice, with nave. chancel, north transept, good font, and tower containing three bells, The nave has recently been re-built, and is an excellent example of Early Decorated work. The transept on the north side was erected in 1866 by the late Mrs. Arkwright and members of her family, to the memory of the late John Arkwright; Esq., who died February 27th, 1858. A brass on the wall also records the death of .Mrs. Arkwright ; and there is another to commemorate the death of Henry Arkwright, fourth son of John Arkwright, Esq., who was lost in an avalanche whilst ascending Mont Blanc on October 12th, r866. In the chancel is a handsome monument to the Coningsby family, by Roubilliac, without inscription. Sir Thomas Coningsby1 Knight, the founder of the hospital bearing his name at Hereford, was buried here in 1652. The register begins with the year 1701. The parochial charities amount to about £4 yearly. The national school for boys and girls is entirely supported by J. H. Arkwright, Esq. It is under a master and mistress, and has accommodation for 126 children, with an average attendance of 84. There is a national school for boys and girls at Upper Hill, with accommodation for ror children; average attendance, 58. Upper hill school-room is licensed by the Lord Bishop for divine worship. A benefit society, called the "Hampton Friendly Society," has been established in this parish for upwards of thirty years. A home, styled the '' Hampton Court Home," (erected by]. H. Arkwright, Esq.), for the accommodation of six aged and infirm persons who have been employed on his estate, is endowed by the late Mrs. John Arkwright. The houses are neat and comfortable, with necessary appurtenances, and each ·occupier is allowed a weekly sum for maintenance. Hampton Court, in this parish, formerly the principal seat of the Right Hon. George Capel Coningsby, Earl of Essex, was built under the immediate auspices of King Henry IV., by his favourite yeoman of the robes, Sir Rowland Lenthall, who married either a daughter or a very near kinswoman of that monarch, and who received this estate as a marriage portion with his wife. It passed from the late Earl of Essex to Richard Arkwright, Esq., from whom it descended to John Hungerford

HOPE-UNDER-DINMORE. Arkwright, Esq., M.A., J.P., D.L., its present owner. This beautiful and picturesque seat is situated about half a mile eastward from Hope church. The mansion is a large and magnificent structure, situated on a spacious lawn of nearly Joo acres, and protected on the north-east by an eminence covered with luxuriant foliage. About a quarter of a mile to the south-west flows the river Lugg, which, at some distance below the house, is joined by a stream that rises in the hills about Lockley heath, and meanders through the park in a south-westerly direction. The park is about two miles in circumference; it contains some fine timber, and is well stocked with deer. The scenery around this mansion is in a high degree picturesque and beautiful. Near the house is a good shrubbery, intersected by pleasant walks. The greenhouses <;ontain a variety of curious plants, which, together with the gardens, are kept in complete order. This noble pile partakes partly of the castellated and partly of the monastic character; the buildings surround a quadrangular court, having a grand square entrance-tower in the centre of the north front, and a smaller tower at each extremity. There is also a chapel, which still retains traces of its pristine appearance. Many alterations and additions have of late years been made to this noble building by its present owner. The interior is commodious, and fitted up with great taste. One of the apartments is said to remain in precisely the same state as when occupied by William Ill. when on a visit here. Among the valuable paintings preserved in this mansion are some interesting pieces by Janson, Holbein, Vandyck, Lely, Kneller, and Reynolds ; also caskets and other relics connected with royalty. Winsley House, the residence of Mr. William Turner, farmer, is an object of interest and antiquity, commanding views of great extent. It formerly belonged to Rowland de Windesley, whose daughter and heiress conveyed this ancient seat and property to Bc:rrington de Lacy, by marriage, in the reign of Edward III. Over the porch is carved in old characters : '' Per Signum Tau ~ Libera Nos J esu " (By the sign of the Cross deliver us, 0 Jesus). Upon one of the interior cross-beams is carved an ancient coat of arms those of Windesley. The Bury of Hope, also a farm-house, in the occupation of Mr. Samuel Smith, was anciently the residence of the steward of the manor, and was annexed to the priory of Leominster. PosTAL REGULATIONS.
