Here is a fun fact about the first British man to win gold in the modern pentathlon at last year’s Tokyo Olympics – he loves roti canai, Hokkien mee and durian. By no means are these your typical English fare. But Olympic champion, Joseph Choong is no ordinary Joe. His father, Dr Michael Choong, is a Seremban boy who is now a general practitioner in London. Dr Choong shared his pride and joy in watching Joseph win the gold medal in the modern pentathlon event at the Tokyo Olympics last year. It was a beautiful Sunday morning. He was watching Joseph compete on TV in their home in Orpington, on the outskirts of London. Within seconds of him crossing the finish line, the phones started ringing off the hook. Family and friends around the world congratulated them, with many cheers and happy tears. Dr Choong could still remember that moment. The family was nervous for Joseph because so many things could happen to prevent him from being selected, or even competing at the Games. With that, Dr Choong was thankful that Joseph was able to deliver the victory. According to Dr Choong, practising an active and sporty lifestyle was a norm among his five siblings when they were growing up. His siblings represented Negeri Sembilan in an array of sports although none of them were at the national level. So it was no surprise that he and his wife, Beverly cultivated an interest in sports in their sons from a young age. The boys started with swimming and then for winter, skiing. Although the boys have participated in football and tennis, they were naturally better at rugby and helped their team win several club county championships. Dr Choong would love to bring his family back to Malaysia for holidays but trips to Malaysia were rare due to everyone’s busy schedule. Dr Choong said he hopes that both his sons, Joseph and Henry are able to compete alongside each other for the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is Joseph’s motivator to continue if he can compete next to his brother. Reading Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 2 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI MU BAKTI SDN. BHD. 7 WhatsApp was founded in 2009 and since then, it has become a part of the day-to-day life of people globally. Among all forms of messaging platforms, WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app currently. Users can share messages, photos and videos with their friends and family members instantly without any charges. However, this does not mean that WhatsApp is perfect. Even though WhatsApp is loaded with amazing features, we still need to look at the pros and cons of this app. The biggest benefit of WhatsApp is that it is free. There are no charges incurred, so we can send or share photos, messages, contacts and videos to anywhere around the world. Hence, it enables us to save a lot of money. Another benefit of WhatsApp is that it is user-friendly. This is why it is used by both the young and old. People who are not tech-savvy are able to use WhatsApp too. When it comes to the Internet, the most frustrating part of visiting any website or using any application is the advertisements. However, when it comes to WhatsApp, the user does not face such difficulty as at present, there are no advertisements. WhatsApp has played an important role in facilitating business communication between the supplier and the customers. Not only are both parties able to exchange information, but they also work on creative ideas to find solutions to the problems. Information can also be shared by creating a group on WhatsApp with multiple users. It is the fastest way to disseminate information to many people at one go. We can also share jokes and memes to bring smiles to our friends. However, WhatsApp runs mainly on smartphones and one needs to have an Internet connection to access this application. Therefore, it is of no use to those who either do not have a smartphone or the Internet. Another drawback is that some users consider all information shared on WhatsApp to be accurate which can lead to the spread of rumours and misinformation. Hence, in a way, WhatsApp helps mischievous users create panic and chaos among people. Furthermore, with this application, anyone can view our profile picture which leads to the loss of privacy. Besides that, anyone can add us to a group which can be annoying as sometimes the constant beeping of messages can cause us to consciously or unconsciously check our mobile phones. In addition to teens, adults too regularly keep checking their phones to see if they have a new message or a reply. This leads to a lot of time wasted and loss of productivity. WhatsApp has led to people being disconnected from the real world. We can talk to a person far away but we may not pay any attention to the person in the same room as us. The old practice of spending family time is vanishing like tigers from our nation. Finally, a different style of language used by WhatsApp users, comprising slang and abbreviations, has tremendously degraded our grammatical skills. As one can see from the above, this application has advantages as well as disadvantages. Nevertheless, the disadvantages can be overlooked as it is one of those innovations or technological advancements which have become part of our daily lives. 9 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about the negative effects of social media. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. HOW SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECTS US The rise of social media has meant that we as a global population are more connected than we have ever been in the history of time. (1) D . The constant stream of perfectly filtered photos that depict seemingly perfect lives which appear on social media are bound to knock many people’s self-esteem. A study conducted by the University of Copenhagen found that many people suffer from social media envy. (2) a . It was found that those who abstained from using social media felt more satisfied with their lives. Social media can be great for looking back fondly on memories and recounting how past events occurred. (3) f . Many of us are guilty of spending far too much time trying to take the perfect photo, all the while not actually absorbing the firsthand experience of witnessing it with our own eyes. Having enough sleep is of paramount importance. Unfortunately, many of us use our phones too soon before sleep, making it harder to doze off. (4) e . Try setting yourself a strict rule of not going on your phone for at least 40 minutes to an hour before going to bed, and see if that makes a difference to the quality of your sleep. It is undeniable that we have an infinite amount of information and entertainment readily available at our fingertips thanks to social media.(5) b . Social media has provided a means of instant, easy-to-access entertainment, so we hardly have the patience to wait for anything that takes longer than five minutes. (6) G . While you don’t necessarily have to quit social media for good, if you feel like it’s beginning to bog you down, why not consider allocating social media free time slots during your daily routine? The slight change could do you a whole lot of good. A This is because we tend to compare ourselves with the image projected by others on social media and find ourselves lacking. B But this also means that people have become far more easily distracted. C When we derive a sense of worth on comparison to others, we place our happiness that is completely beyond our control. D However, our reliance on social media can have a detrimental effect on our mental health. E Getting worked up from what we see on social media keeps the brain on high alert, preventing us from falling asleep easily. F However, it can also distort the way in which you remember certain experiences. G In short, social media has proven to have many negative effects if used too much and without caution. H A survey of 1,000 individuals stated that they felt increasingly unhappy and isolated. 13 You must answer this question. Question 2 Your class is talking about the reasons they want to study abroad after completing secondary school. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay on why students prefer to study abroad. In your essay, you should write about: • experiencing another culture • learning to be independent • making new friends Use all the notes above and given reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] As the SPM examination draws to a close, many students are planning to further their studies and most would like to pursue a tertiary education abroad for various reasons. [Point 1] Firstly, students feel it is a great opportunity to experience another culture. People who live abroad for a period of time will be able to immerse themselves in a different setting and learn new things that might be alien to them. [Point 2] Apart from that, it is also the best way to learn to be independent as students are away from their loved ones. They are responsible for everything in their lives, from keeping a budget to maintaining their grades, which would be great preparation for adulthood. [Point 3] Finally, this is a great opportunity to make new friends from all over the world. While abroad, the students will not only meet local students but also other international students who are as far from home as they are. [Conclusion] In conclusion, it is indeed very beneficial to study abroad if given the opportunity. 16 SoW: Lesson 20 LS 3.1.2 Understand specific details and information in extended texts on a wide range of familiar topics A Read an extract of a story. When the sun set, Ajunan’s eldest son, Rebana, took a long mop and wiped the floor in front of his father’s verandah. And as though they have been waiting for that, Ajunan’s relatives and friends began to arrive. Every man with his goatskin bag hung on one shoulder and a rolled mat under his arm. Soon the in-laws began to arrive. Young boys and girls walking in single file carrying pots of milk and trays of delicious food came, first. Ajunan’s relatives counted the pots of milk as they came in. Altogether, there were fifty pots. The hosts nodded their heads in approval. After the pot-bearers, came Ajit, the suitor, and the elders of the family. They sat in half-moon, thus completing a circle with their hosts. Then the bride, her mother and a few women emerged from the inner compound and went round the circle exchanging pleasantries. The married women wore their best clothes and the young girls wore red and black waist-beads and anklets of brass. When the women left, Ajunan presented betel leaves to his in-laws. His eldest brother took the first leaf. ‘Life to all of us,’ he said as he put the leaf into his mouth and chewed. ‘And let there be friendship between our families.’ Everyone answered, ‘Eeee-e-e!’ ‘We are bringing our daughter into your home today. She will be a good wife to you. She will take care of everyone.’ ‘Eeee-e-e!’ Then everyone took a betel leaf and chewed. Milk was poured into bowls for everyone to drink. Groups of four or five men sat round the pot in their midst. As the evening wore on, food was served to the guests. There were huge bowls of steamed chicken and steaming hot pots of soup. There were also pots of yam porridge. The young men raised a song. And everyone started to join in. The musicians with their wood, clay and metal instruments went from song to song. It was a great feast. The night was already far spent when the guests rose to go, bringing the newlywed couple to their home. The bride will spend seven weeks with the suitor’s family. They continued to sing songs as they went. B Choose the correct answer. 1 When did the marriage feast begin? A At sunset B When the relatives and friends arrived C After Rebana wiped the front compound 2 In paragraph 2, why did the elders nod their heads in approval? A The number of pots of milk was correct. B They were pleased with the gifts. C The in-laws came on time. 3 Where were the women most of the time? A In the inner compound B Seated in the half circle C With the pot bearers and in-laws 4 What do you think the expression ‘Eeee-e-e!’ mean? They have no idea how their children are behaving in school. So when they get a call from the school authorities to inform them that their children are causing problems, they are totally shocked. Although we have disciplinary teachers and prefects to monitor students, nothing much could be done if bullying happens outside the school parameters. We hope parents and members of the community would share information with us so that we can effectively curb such incidents in our community. 2 The purpose of the extract is to ask parents A to play a role in their children’s life. B to help reduce criminal acts outside the school. C not to blame the school for cases of indiscipline. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the given stimuli. A warm welcome to my blog My Profi le • A teen who is an animal lover • Loves blogging too Saturday, 16 February 2024, 9.30 p.m. Every morning, my pet cat, Dusty would come and wake me up. Today, however, she did not. At fi rst, I was not too worried. I then went to give Dusty her breakfast. She barely stirred from her sleep. She would normally gobble up her food in seconds. When Dusty fi nally woke up, she vomited. I began to panic. My mother and I quickly took Dusty to the veterinarian. The veterinarian, Dr Anand, examined Dusty and said she was suffering from gastritis. She told us there was nothing to worry about and gave Dusty some medicine. Dr Anand told us that Dusty would be cured in a day or two. We took Dusty home and gave her the medicine. Just as Dr Anand predicted, Dusty was fi ne after a few days. Here are some things that you can do: Chat with or video call friends and family to stay connected. Just because you can’t see each other face to face does not mean that you can’t stay in touch. Limit social media use. Avoid rumours and misinformation by getting news from trusted sources. Exercise regularly at home or around your neighbourhood. Exercise can improve your mood and well-being. 7 The poster gives tips to young people on how to __________ during the pandemic. A avoid stress B maintain physical and mental health C make use of the Internet and social media Good friends make life worthwhile, so we should treasure our friendships. Whenever something bad happens or when we need some advice, we can certainly rely on true friends. Our friends will also be the ones to celebrate our triumphs. The only problem is that good friends are often taken for granted. When life gets busy, friendships can easily be set aside or forgotten. Thus, it is important to make time for our friends no matter how busy we are. 8 How can we avoid taking our friends for granted? 21 At about the age of 17, many teenagers are eager to get a part-time job despite most of them having no work experience before. They may have been earning money by running errands, babysitting, washing cars or pet-sitting, but these occasional jobs are not challenging enough for them. What many young people want is the steady grown-up responsibility and reward of some regular jobs they can work at and be paid for. Parents are well-advised to encourage this desire, even though when the teens have jobs, the parents are often deprived of their help at home. On Saturdays, when the unemployed teens usually help around the house, it will most likely be their big day on the job, especially if they work as a salesperson at the mall, a restaurant worker, or in other service-oriented jobs. The money the teens will earn is naturally of great importance to them. They want and need money to spend as they like. Parents would usually give some pocket money to the teens but they usually feel that they need more money. They may feel left out among their peers if they do not have money for concerts, class events and other activities that teens indulge in. They may want to buy video games, clothes or other things that their parents deem unnecessary. Parents may find it difficult to convince teens that the things they want are a waste of money. Teens may actually need that item, either to boost their self-confidence, to keep up with their friends or simply for personal satisfaction. For these teens, it may be difficult to justify their spending to their parents. Therefore, meeting such needs with their own money is a good enough reason for wanting a part-time job. However, getting a part-time job is not all about monetary gain. It is a specific challenge in which they can test themselves in the real world. It is a clearly outlined area in which they are responsible. They are in a situation in which they are no longer children but individuals judged on their own merit, and in turn, they will be able to judge themselves on the same basis. Besides that, when teenagers work part-time, they have the opportunity to learn many things not taught within the four walls of the classroom. They will be able to learn to socialise in different environments and meet different people. Working part-time may just be a short stint, but it is an invaluable lesson for the teenagers. While some may disagree that it could affect their studies, teens may learn to manage their time in a more systematic way by having a part-time job. Certainly, money should not be the main reason for teens to work. However, it cannot be denied that the money will come in handy especially if the teens come from families with financial difficulties. They will be able to help their parents to keep the family going and they can help to contribute to the home expenditure. In short, working part-time will do a lot of good for a teen. Hence, teens should not only be allowed but also encouraged to work. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D.
