23 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about the experience of a student during the Movement Control Order. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. CLIMBING A TREE TO GET BETTER INTERNET CONNECTION Residents in urban areas may take the Internet for granted. (1) F . This is the story of one student who had to spend the night on a tree and almost got stung by a hornet in order to sit for her online examinations. (2) B . All Malaysians were affected, including university students who had to study and take their exams off-campus. It was undoubtedly challenging for most students but Veveonah Mosibin, a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student who lives in the remote village of Kampung Sabanalang Pitas, some 200 km from Kota Kinabalu, had the most unique experience by far. “(3) D . It’s fine when I have to go for online classes and surf the Internet but for my exams, I needed a strong and uninterrupted connection. That was why I chose to hike up a hill to study and later on, challenged myself to sleep on a tree for 24 hours for my exams.” (4) G . Armed with three packets of leaf-wrapped rice, a bottle of water, some study tools and a mosquito net, the determined girl set out on an adventure. One video showed her climbing up a hill and making a bamboo hut that she wanted to use while she sat for the exam. (5) A . Undeterred, in another video, Veveonah easily climbed a tree, found a sturdy branch to spend the day and night on, placed her supplies on top and then put up the mosquito net. (6) E . She eventually managed to coax the hornet out of the tent without getting stung and resumed her task. Veveonah said growing up in the village meant that she learnt survival skills from her parents. She added that the jungle is a huge part of her life and she never felt lost when she is together with nature. A However, the hut was destroyed during heavy rain. B Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the nation was under the Movement Control Order. C One would be “lucky” if they actually manage to connect to the Internet. D Internet access is not something that is readily available. E Everything progressed well except for a brief moment of alarm when a hornet entered her makeshift mosquito net tent. F Unfortunately, there are still some people in rural areas who have to go to great lengths to get good connectivity. G The 18-year-old posted videos on her YouTube channel of her experience. H She is not alone in her predicament. [6 marks] Gapped Text (Reading and Use of English) Paper 1 – Part 4 Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 23 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. What do you suggest? I would like to hear what you think. Your brother Write an email to your brother in about 80 words in the space provided. Hello bro, I think that is a great idea! 27 You must answer this question. Question 2 Your teacher has given a topic of discussion for the class – Should students be allowed to bring smartphones to school? Write an essay on what you think of this topic. In your essay, you should write about: • advantages of bringing smartphones to school • disadvantages of bringing smartphones to school • your final stance on this topic Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in appropriate style. [Introduction] It is undeniable that bringing smartphones to school has many advantages, but there are disadvantages that could be detrimental to students as well. [Advantages] A great advantage is that smartphones can enrich the learning experience of a student. Students can get information, watch educational videos as well as have access to lots of useful apps. Besides that, it is also great during emergencies when students need to get in touch with their parents or guardian quickly. [Disadvantages] However, smartphones can be a huge distraction in class. Students may be less inclined to pay attention to the teacher when all sorts of entertainment are right at their fingertips. Furthermore, there might be less social interaction between students as everyone would be glued to their phones. [Final stance] In my opinion, while there are disadvantages, there are more benefits to having smartphones in school especially in terms of education. It is up to the school to implement some necessary rules so that students do not abuse the privilege. It drives us to the point (5) we can be forced to go against our morals and beliefs. We spend our time working hard to earn money (6) we can have a comfortable life. However, there are some people who prefer to take the shortcut and take (7) of others in order to get rich. Extra Practice 35 Cyberspace offers unlimited options for quick and easy ways to shop, fi nd investment opportunities, communicate, and much more, right from the comfort of our homes. However, the Internet is also a quick and easy channel for scammers to trick and cheat unsuspecting people with false advertising and false promises. They target those who do not know how to determine the validity of online offers and sales. So we need to be alert and protect ourselves from falling victim to such scams. When dealing with uninvited contacts from people, whether it is over the phone, through email, in person or on a social networking site, always consider the possibility that the approach may be a scam. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. You also need to know who you are dealing with. If you have only ever met someone via social media, or are unsure of the legitimacy of a business, take some time to do a bit more research. Do a Google image search on the photos used or search the Internet for others who may have had dealings with them. If a message or email comes from a friend and it seems unusual or out of character for them, contact your friend directly. Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows, or click on links or attachments in emails. Delete them straightaway. If you are unsure, verify the identity of the contact through an independent source such as a phone book or online search. Hang up phone calls when asked for remote access to your computer even if they mention a wellknown company. Scammers will often ask you to turn on your computer to fi x a problem or install a free upgrade, which is actually a virus that will give them your passwords and personal details. Keep your personal details secure. Keep your passwords and pin numbers in a safe place. Be very careful about how much personal information you share on social media sites. Scammers can use your information and pictures to create a fake identity or to target you with a scam. Beware of any requests for your details or money. Never send money or give credit card details, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you do not know or trust. Do not agree to transfer money or goods for someone else – money laundering is a criminal offence. Be careful when shopping online. Always use an online shopping service that you know and trust. Think twice before using virtual currencies such as Bitcoin – they do not have the same protection as other transaction methods, which means you cannot get your money back once you send it. Learn more about online shopping scams. Be wary of unusual payment requests. Scammers will often ask you to use an unusual payment method, including preloaded debit cards, or gift cards. Choose your passwords carefully and update them regularly. A strong password should include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Do not use the same password for every account or profi le, and do not share your passwords with anyone. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Parents’ approach to money management is quite crucial in shaping how their children behave towards money, as well as how they manage it. It is assumed that most teenagers don’t recognise the value of money – yet. Seeing as they don’t earn it in any significant capacity, they may still think that it is an unlimited resource that comes from nowhere. That is why the first thing any parent needs to do is to provide them with some responsibility and freedom. (2) A . They will understand more about the basic concept of money and what it takes to earn the financial funds. For most teens, a set amount of their own pocket money represents their first step into the wider world of financial responsibility and personal finances. If a teenager only gets a set, but regular amount of money, they will know what it means to stay within a certain budget. (3) g . When they understand that they won’t be getting additional money to make up for it, they’ll start realising the importance of personal finance management. (4) B . Even people who haven’t been particularly money-savvy in their teens have found themselves saving up money for one thing or another at some point. However, saving for a new pair of sneakers or an expensive gaming console isn’t likely to lead to wise money management later on. Instead, teens must realise that saving money isn’t a temporary task to complete, it’s a way of life. (5) h . In conclusion, educating teens about money and personal finances isn’t something you can just give them a crash course on. (6) e . A If teens get the freedom to independently manage their own money, they will certainly learn a couple of valuable life lessons. B Next, teens must learn the importance of saving. C As teenagers start approaching adulthood, it gets harder and harder to talk to them about finances. D But it is important to give teens some sort of financial knowledge so that they can manage their money better when they reach adulthood. E Instead, this needs to be a long-term effort, particularly when they reach their late teens. F Teens who start getting a fixed sum early on are far more aware of the intricacies of money management later on. G Any impulse purchase will cost no one but them, and they will know that no more money is coming in until their next pocket money. H That way, they’ll ease into the simple principle of only buying stuff they can realistically afford. 38 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following texts. Read the magazine article below and answer the questions that follow. How to be a Smart Shopper Spending money is inevitable. But, we can teach ourselves to spend money wisely. There is a difference between needs and wants. Here are some tips on how to become a smart shopper. Keep them in mind the next time you shop. SHOPPING HABITS A recent survey shows that: • 94% teenagers are impulse buyers • 88% teenagers prefer to shop with their friends • 60% teenagers have never bought pre-loved items • 50% teenagers do not have a fi xed budget Set a Budget This is a very important fi rst step! Set a budget for food, studies, clothes, entertainment, etc. And make sure you stick to it! If an item doesn’t fi t in your budget, then don’t buy it or save it for the next month. Make a List Before shopping, list everything you plan on buying. The rule is that you’re not allowed to buy anything unless it’s already on your list. Also, never go grocery shopping if you’re hungry! When you’re hungry, everything will look delicious and you’ll end up overspending. A B Compare Prices Prices can vary from one shop to another, so look around fi rst before you buy. Bargain shops and hypermarkets tend to offer cheaper prices and sometimes online shops give the best discounts. Make sure you are getting the best deal. Pay with Cash It’s better to pay with cash so you can actually see the money that you’re spending. This might make it harder to overspend. Credit cards sometimes give you the idea that you have more money than you actually do. In addition, the interest incurred is just more unnecessary spending. C D Go Pre-loved There are many pre-loved items that look almost as good as new and cost a fraction of the retail price. So check out thrift shops, vintage shops, used bookshops and fl ea markets. Buying pre-loved is better for the environment too. Save Your Receipts Don’t remove tags or throw away the receipts until you’re ready to use or wear the items. Some shops allow you up to a month to return your purchases. Give yourself a chance to change your mind even after you’ve made your purchases. B 2 Dino bought a video game from a shop but later found out that another shop sells it at a lower price. C 3 Beena often buys things on impulse and later changes her mind about it. F 4 Suzy is on a very tight budget and cannot afford to buy things at retail price. E [4 marks] Questions 5 to 8 Complete the email below using words from the text. Choose no more than one word from the article for each answer. To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Shop smart! Hi! Recently, you told me that you were a bit worried about your shopping habits. Well, I just read an article and it seems that you are no different from most teenagers. According to a survey, most teenagers today like to buy things on (5) impulse and would rather go shopping with their friends rather than their parents. Therefore, to avoid (6) overspending , try to set a budget and make a list of the things you plan to buy. Also, shop at places that offer cheaper prices such as (7) hypermarkets or online shops. Finally, pre-loved items are really good options because they cost much less and are good for the (8) environment . Hope this helps. Do you think learning music has more advantages or disadvantages? Pick a stance. Then organise your main ideas and think of the supporting details. Example: C Write a paragraph using notes from the table above. Give a title. Advantages of Learning Music There are some great advantages if students learn music in school. One advantage of learning music is it builds language skills. This is because as students learn to play their instrument, they will be accustomed to the different sounds that they would not have recognised before. This helps to train the students’ ears for nuances and subtle sounds of language. Besides that, music helps to increase students’ IQs. It is proven that students’ IQs increase even after a few weeks of musical training. Music lessons require hours of concentration and patience. Students need to persevere even when things are not going well. This teaches them discipline. Additionally, students need to use their bodies to keep the rhythm going when they play the instruments. They also need to coordinate different motions with their hands at the same time. Hence, they are able to develop strength and coordination. Furthermore, music promotes social skills. Students usually learn to play music in a group in school. They have to learn to work together to achieve a common goal. Finally, music exposes students to other cultures. Students will get the opportunity to learn music from various parts of the world, be it African drumming or Argentine tango. It is a gateway to different cultures. 48 Questions 1 to 10 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D to fi ll in each blank. Inculcating Good Eating Habits Among Teens Adolescence is a time of rapid (0) growth . In fact, teens gain almost 50% of their adult weight during the adolescent years. (1) , they are less likely to eat a balanced diet than any other age groups. Teens know it is important to eat right (2) many do not understand basic nutrition. They skip breakfast and choose too (3) high-fat foods when snacking, or frequently eat at fast-food restaurants. Good eating habits actually begin in early childhood and that is when parents (4) start setting a good example. During the teenage years, however, parents have to be more (5) in guiding food choices. They cannot control what teens eat or do not eat during the day when they are in school. But they surely can offer (6) choices at home. Teens are usually impulsive eaters who like (7) on what is right at hand. So parents could stock the refrigerator with healthy snacks. Also, (8) a nutritious dinner and try to make mealtimes enjoyable. Finally, try to have dinner at the same time every day, preferably (9) 8 p.m. This is to ensure that the food is digested well before bedtime. 49 Appearance and image are very important in our society today, and it is even more so when you are a teenager. Fashion trends play a huge part in cultivating the appearance and image of a person. Let’s take a look at how fashion can influence a teenager. “I think fashion can make a teenager more creative in their everyday life,” says 16-year-old Schweta Singh. “You may be wondering how fashion could possibly develop creativity. But if you really think about it, when you are getting dressed, you are most likely mixing and matching the clothes you have and putting together a look. That is a creative process. Perhaps the creativity could be applied to other areas in your life as well.” Adam Haris, 18, who also runs a fashion blog, says, “Fashion can make teenagers more interested in other cultures. Some fashion trends may be influenced by specific cultures such as Japanese, Indian, Korean, English and so on. As a result, the teenager might want to do a bit of research on that culture and this enables them to learn about the various peoples of the world.” Jessica Tang, 17, who plans to further her studies in fashion design, has a different view. “Fashion enables teenagers to project who they want to be. The right clothes can make them appear professional, classy, fun, sporty, the list goes on. If they have a job interview, wearing a smart outfit could make them look professional and they would be taken seriously, and be considered for the job. If a teenager often wears branded clothes, then he or she is most likely perceived as someone rich and classy.” “For me, being fashionable gives a teenager self-confidence. When someone wears nice, trendy clothes, he or she may get compliments which will certainly make a person feel good about themselves. It builds self-esteem,” says Prem Kumar, 15. Can a teenager take fashion too far then? Yes, according to Sheliza Adnan, 17. “Having an interest in fashion is great but we must be careful not to become slaves to fashion. I have friends who often skip meals to save money so that they can buy branded outfits. And there are some who don’t welcome me in their clique simply because I’m not fashionable enough.” “Teenagers must also choose trends that are appropriate for their age and culture,” says Tan Pei Lee, a mother with a teenage daughter. “I see some trends that are too mature for teenagers to emulate and some are just plain ridiculous!” Since teenagers are still trying to find their identity, it is very likely that their fashion sense will continue to evolve as they grow up. In the meantime, as long as teenagers know the limit, they should be allowed to express themselves through fashion. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Extra Practice 51 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about cosplay. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fi ts the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. COSPLAY You may have seen them around town – people decked out in colourful costumes resembling superheroes or comic book characters. They are indeed hard to miss. (1) D . From books and comics to movies, TV shows, animes, and video games, cosplayers dress up as characters from pop culture. (2) F . Comic book and science fi ction conventions have a long history of encouraging attendees to dress up in costumes. (3) H . However, these conventions later looked like masquerade balls, and prizes were given to the best costumes. Cosplay has grown dramatically over the last 15 to 20 years, and the question is why has it become so popular? (4) A . But it also offers something much more important than that. Whether you’re an experienced cosplayer or a newbie, people will talk with you, ask about your costume and your inspiration, swap stories about favourite characters and shows, and even ask to take your photo. It can help introverts to come out of their shells and allow them to fi nd like-minded friends. (5) E . “It was really comforting to put on a costume and think, hey, I look pretty as this character, and then see the same beauty when I took the costume off and return to being me,” said 18-yearold Emilia. “At conventions, I get praise and admiration from people and that makes me feel special, even for just a while.” That’s what the convention and cosplay communities do. They lift people up. So where is cosplay heading from here? One thing is for sure, this trend is not letting up anytime soon. (6) B . The sky’s the limit! A The short answer is that cosplay is fun. B Seeing as how many people enjoy it and that it’s a social media-friendly activity, cosplay is set to grow to great heights in the coming years. C More than 60 percent of cosplayers are female. D This act of dressing up is called cosplay, and these folks are cosplayers. E Cosplaying can also help someone overcome low self-esteem. F Costumes range from the basic ready-made costumes available in shops, to elaborate pieces of art that cosplayers spend hours designing and sewing. G Some cosplayers are drawn to characters’ strong personalities because they feel like they can either relate to them or because they look up to them H Beginning in the late 1930s in America, participants were initially only required to dress appropriately for the genre, not mimic a character. 52 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following texts. Read the texts carefully and answer the questions that follow. Matching and Information Transfer (Reading and Use of English) Paper 1 – Part 5 Spending Habits of Teenagers A – MISHA, 17 years old Image plays an important part in the spending habits of many teenagers. They want to look fashionable, so they do not mind spending money on clothes and accessories. I think it is wasteful to spend a lot of money to follow fashion trends because they do not last. B – JAMIE, 16 years old Teenagers spend most of their money on clothes and food. The next popular spending categories are video games and gadgets. I think this trend will continue in the coming years. Clothes and food are necessities. Most teenagers consider themselves gamers, so they will spend on games, new consoles, or mobile phones. C – ROSHAN, 15 years old I get an allowance from my parents and gift money on special occasions. I have a limited source of income at the moment, so I am picky about what I spend on. So, I am going to spend on things that I really need, not want. D – NOOREYA, 16 years old I like to believe I am savvy about money. I do not go for brand-name products because they are expensive. Lesser-known brands or store brands are just as good. Why pay more for something when a cheaper version is just as good? E – WILLIAM, 15 years old Many of my friends make purchases after seeing something they like on social media. I think social media is an important tool used to market products because it is a quick and easy way to purchase things. But this could lead to an online shopping addiction and that is scary! F – TANISHA, 17 years old Everyone wants to look good, so I can understand why some of my peers spend most of their money on trendy clothes. These types of clothes are versatile, meaning they are not only comfortable but also suitable for any activity. I think it is worth the money to spend on several pieces of trendy clothing that can be used for different occasions. As they say, quality, not quantity! Fashion and trends not only evolve but also come with an (6) expensive price tag. These days, sellers (7) market their products on social media. Since teenagers spend most of their time on social media, shopping becomes quick and easy for them. However, there are some teenagers who think carefully before spending. They are (8) picky about what they buy because they do not have a lot of money. Others do not want to spend on expensive brand-name items. 54 You must answer this question. Question 1 You received an email from a classmate, Johan who is new in town. Hi! As you know, I just moved here with my family two weeks ago. So, I am not sure where I could spend my free time. Where do people our age hang out? Is there a recreation park here? What can I do there? Are there any specific rules that I need to follow? I will be waiting for your reply. Thanks! Johan Write an email to your classmate in about 80 words in the space provided. Hi! Well, there are a lot of things you can do here. [Where] Most teens our age go to the recreation park behind the school. If you like to jog, there is a 3-km jogging track. There is also a skate park if you like to skateboard or rollerblade. Or you can just simply enjoy a stroll or cycle round the lake. [Rules] When you are in the park, remember not to litter everywhere. Also, no fishing in the lake! Hope you enjoy your day there. 55 You must answer this question. Question 2 Your classmates have been discussing the types of sports they enjoy. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about the benefits of sports. In your essay, you should write about: • reducing sedentary lifestyle • developing good motor skills • cultivating a sense of pride Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Introduction] Students who participate in sports from a young age reap many benefits. Sports can give one a great start in life. [Point 1] One only needs to consider the rise of obesity due to a sedentary lifestyle among children to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Participating in sports will give students the opportunity to be active, to keep fit and trim and to develop good muscle tone. [Point 2] Sports also help students develop good motor skills and coordination. By kicking or catching a ball, swinging a bat and shooting a ball through a hoop, one can become more agile, limber and even graceful. [Point 3] Students who participate in sports will develop a sense of pride in their achievements. They do not have to win competitions to feel a sense of accomplishment. Completing and participating in a sporting event itself will be a great confidence booster. [Conclusion] Hence, students should definitely be encouraged to take up sports. PBD Practices 57 SoW: Lesson 56 LS 3.1.2 Understand specific details and information in extended texts on a wide range of familiar topics Read the paragraphs carefully and match the headings a – g with the correct paragraphs. There are two extra headings which you do not need to use. a. Trusting a hotel safe b. Making phone calls onboard c. Packing everything in a bag d. Be prepared in case of emergency e. Be aware of local laws f. Being careless in an airport g. Checking your bank balance online Watch your wallet, don’t talk to strangers and skip the street food if you are travelling in the tropics. Well, I am sure you are well aware of these ‘issues’ when going abroad. But there are more travel taboos than you know. Remember these tips on what not to do in order to have a safe and enjoyable trip. Most travellers make an effort to learn about the local laws but sometimes we need to do some extra research. Be aware if you are in Thailand, for example, you don’t want to place your foot on the Thai banknote, as there is a picture of their king on it. If you are in Singapore, you may not transport durian on the train and here in Malaysia, you can’t bring a durian into any hotel premises. Taking pictures using drones in certain countries may cause you problems. This practice is banned completely in Morocco, Iran and Egypt. 1 Be aware of local laws You may have thought of stowing your passport, money, tickets and other valuable items in the hotel room safe. But how safe are hotel safes? Safes in hotel rooms often present little obstacle for thieves as they are only mounted in wardrobe or on the wall with screws, so they can be easily removed from the site. So, it is safer to use the safe at the hotel reception. You get a receipt and your items are fully insured. 2 Trusting a hotel safe Do you check where the emergency exit of the hotel you are staying is? No matter how good the sprinkler system is, you want to know the way out if something catches fire, particularly if you are on an upper floor. Besides that, make sure you know what emergency number to dial in the country you are in. 3 Be prepared in case of emergency Reading Unit 5 Globetrotting Theme: People and Culture Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 57 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. You might wind up in the wrong network if you see something like ‘Guest’ on the list of free networks. It could be a scam set up close to the hotel. If you are unlucky, thieves can find your email log-ins, bank passwords and track your activities or redirect the connection to phishing sites. 4 Checking your bank balance online It is a great experience to go on a cruise holiday. But if you are on a cruise from Sweden or Norway, you may want to think twice about reaching for your smartphone. As passengers would not have a mobile phone connection at sea, major cruise ships have onboard mobile network connected to a satellite network. However, these networks can cost you a bomb in your pocket. A brief call can cost between RM14 to RM33 per minute. It is better to switch the phone to flight mode until you reach dry land. 5 Making phone calls onboard Audio So, be a smart tourist when you are travelling. Make a comparison using the points given. Then choose the mode of transport you prefer. Give reasons for your choice. The two modes of transport shown are the train and the bus. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The train is a comforting and relaxing mode of transport. You can enjoy a scenic view during your journey as the railway line usually passes the villages and countryside. You can also take a walk along the aisle between coaches to stretch your legs at any time. You are usually served a buffet meal at the dining coach. Restrooms are also available. It is overall a reliable and safe mode of transport but travels at a slower pace. As for the bus, there are a variety of bus types to choose from such as the express bus, coach and double-decker bus. The bus travels to more locations and has more time slots which is very convenient. Generally, travelling by bus is more affordable too. Depending on the type of bus, you are served snacks and a drink during your journey. However, the travel time usually depends on traffic and a bus sometimes has occasional stops along the way. I would prefer to travel by train as I would like to enjoy a comfortable and scenic journey. 63 Last year, I had the opportunity to visit Bangkok – my first ever trip out of the country without my family. I was obviously thrilled but which 17-year-old wouldn’t be? I went with three other friends and we booked a six-day tour with a tour agency. Our flight took about two and a half hours from KLIA and landed safely. Then we made our way to Baiyoke Hotel situated right in the city centre. The climate in Bangkok is not much different from Kuala Lumpur – hot and humid. But if you think the traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur is really bad, then you have yet to see the worst. In the congested streets of Bangkok, vehicles squeeze and cram into any available space and it can take almost an hour even if the distance may be just 3 km away! After we checked in and freshened up, we went off to an authentic Thai restaurant to enjoy delicious Thai cuisine while being entertained by elegant and graceful traditional Thai dancers. There was also a Thai boxing demonstration. The food was superb and everyone seemed to enjoy the pandan chicken and seafood tom yum soup the most. However, little did we realise that our culinary experience had just begun. Every day, we were brought to different types of eateries – from street food to upscale restaurants – and we were served with all kinds of irresistible, mouth-watering temptations. On one occasion, we went to a restaurant where the buffet spread was so long that the waiters had to use roller skates to move around! Another highlight of the trip was the tour of Bangkok which I found quite interesting. We visited many temples as well as a crocodile and a snake farm which gave me the creeps. One place that I really liked was the floating market which you should not miss. You will see vendors selling their products from souvenirs to food to household items from their wooden boats. The Rose Garden was next on our list but do not be deceived by the name. There were hardly any roses there! It was actually a place to showcase the diversity of Thai culture. We got to see more Thai traditional dancing and Thai Boxing. Bangkok is indeed a shopping haven. We went to their famous Pratunam Shopping Complex where you could find really cheap imitations of branded products. There were branded leather jackets, wallets, bags, T-shirts and perfumes all going for a song. We also went to Chatuchak Market which is another tourist attraction. However, I did not like this place as it was too crowded with shoppers jostling and pushing. And with hundreds of sellers in the vicinity, it was not possible to visit every stall, although there were so many things to see. Before I knew it, the six-day tour had come to an end. It was a memorable trip and I had a lot of fun with my friends. Would I visit Thailand again? Yes, absolutely! There is still so much more to discover and the amazing food is enough reason for me to return. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. 65 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about a unique village in Japan. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. A UNIQUE VILLAGE IN JAPAN Nestled in the valleys of Shikoku, Japan, lies the village of Nagoro – a village mainly populated by dolls. It was never a big, bustling village. (1) e . But over the years, its remote location has led more and more of its residents to leave for big cities in search of work. Sixteen years ago, Tsukimi Ayano returned to her home in Nagoro to look after her father, Nagoro’s oldest resident. (2) a . After retiring, her father returned to Nagoro to help take care of his ailing father-in-law and settled down there. (3) f . Seeing how well it turned out gave her the idea to replace the other villagers with similar dolls. Ten years later, her work continues. Confronted with constant departures, she has populated the village with dolls, each representing a former villager. (4) c . An old woman tends a roadside grave, while another rests in a wheelchair. Construction workers smoke cigarettes on break while others wait at the bus stop. A father pulls a wagon full of children. A mischief maker shakes chestnuts from a tree. Made from straw, fabric and old clothes, Ayano is constantly making new figures to replace ones that have worn out. Presently, only about two dozen adults live in this village. “We never see children here anymore,” said Ayano. (5) B . The elementary school closed its doors in 2012, shortly after the last two students completed sixth grade. But on a recent bright autumn Sunday, Ayano brought the school back to life. (6) G . This year, Ayano decided to recreate a school sports day with more than 40 dolls placed around the school. For the event, a group of college volunteers as well as a few other villagers offered to help out. The local school is now filled with a few dozen dolls on a footrace, perched on the swings and tossing balls. Inside the school, dolls loiter on the stairwells or sit at desks in front of teachers giving eternal lessons. “I think it is a beautiful way to make the village alive again,” said a visitor. A She had moved out of the village at age 12 when her father took a job in Osaka. B The last children were born in Nagoro 18 years ago. C Around 300 of the giant dolls now reside in and around Nagoro, posed in various scenes evoking the real people who once populated the village. D It just so happened that she did it with dolls rather than humans. E At its peak, the population only reached about 350 people. F Upon her father’s death, Ayano decided to build a scarecrow in the likeness of her father. G For the last seven years, she has organised an annual doll festival. H Just 38 students are enrolled in the entire school. [6 marks] Gapped Text (Reading and Use of English) Paper 1 – Part 4 Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 65 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. 69 You must answer this question. Question 2 It is school holidays soon and your class is discussing the places that they could go as a class. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about the place you would like to go for the class trip. In your essay, you should write about: • the place of your choice • the reasons for your choice • one benefit the class will gain from the trip Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Place] I would like our class to visit Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. It is one of Malaysia’s most popular theme parks with both wet and dry land and is definitely worth a visit. [Reasons] There are a variety of rides as well as activities, so we can easily find those that suit us. We only need to pay the entrance fee to enjoy these rides all day long. We can meet at the entrance in the morning, have fun on the rides, have lunch together and then continue with the rides until evening. It is also nearby, so all of us would not have a problem getting there. [Benefit] I think the theme park would be a great place for a day trip because it gives us a chance to release stress and have a good time with our classmates before we enter Form 5 next year.
