122 Part 2: Guided Writing [20 marks] You must answer this question. Question 2 Your class has been discussing the advantages and disadvantages of social networking. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay on it. In your essay, you should write about: • the advantages of social networking • the disadvantages of social networking • how to use social networks wisely Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. (Suggested answer) Social networks have become an essential part of the private and professional lives of many people all over the world. One of the most obvious benefi ts of using social networks is that you can keep in touch with your friends easily, quickly and cheaply. Besides, it’s a good way of making new acquaintances, communicating with people from different countries, discussing various topics, and sharing photos and videos. Social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are excellent ways to communicate. However, one negative aspect lies in the fact that some teenagers spend so much time online. As a result, children suffer from a lack of live communication. They can also become Internet addicts. Cyberbullying is a serious problem. People who experience cyberbullying are at great risk for suicidal behaviour. To use social networks wisely, fi rst and foremost, it’s important to be mindful of the time spent on them. Set limits on the time spent on social networks each day and stick to them. Another important thing to keep in mind is to be selective about whom to follow and what to share. Not everything seen on social media is true or important, so it’s important to be mindful of what to pay attention to. All in all, social networks can be a powerful tool for staying connected and informed, but it’s vital to use them wisely. Strategi A+ English Tg4 End of Year.indd 122 21/10/2023 10:59 AM U BAKTI SDN. 132 Questions 21 to 30 You will hear two people talking about a kite surfer. For questions 21 to 30, fi ll in the missing information in each numbered space. Use NO MORE THAN ONE WORD for each space. You will hear the interview twice. Answer all questions. The Kite Surfer Joan Chen is a famous kite surfer who started surfi ng since young. She was one of the (21) youngest kite surfers in Malaysia. She started her hobby in Cherating, Pahang when she was only thirteen. According to her, a kite surfer uses a surfboard and a kite above that catches the (22) wind and pulls along as one surfs the waves. She had a very good fi rst-time experience with kitesurfi ng. As she was among the young ones, her (23) instructor was a bit reluctant but Joan was determined to try. She thought that it would be diffi cult but she managed to pull through. She was truly exhausted on that day. Joan stated that (24) kitesurfi ng keeps her fi t and healthy. She runs every evening and that also has helped her build up her (25) strength for kitesurfi ng. Fortunately, she lives near the sea, so she gets to surf a few times a week. One thing that she has discovered is that kitesurfi ng has a positive impact on her (26) studies as well, which she fi nds weird but great. The (27) equipment for kitesurfi ng is not cheap. Furthermore, not all beaches have kitesurfi ng facilities. However, since Joan lives near the sea where kitesurfi ng is carried out, she continued to practise the skills. She also took additional swimming classes with a (28) certifi ed instructor as she was not confi dent in handling tides and currents. Kitesurfi ng brings people together. They have the same passion and they do not (29) compete against each other. It is like a real community. Kite surfers also help each other in times of need. It is indeed a (30) sociable sport. Joan wants to be a certifi ed kitesurfi ng instructor in the future. Before that, she and her friends are planning to go kitesurfi ng in the South American countries to build up her skills. 135 another culture. People who live abroad for a period of time will be able to immerse themselves in a different setting and learn new things that might be alien to them. Apart from that, it is also the best way to learn to be independent as students are away from their loved ones. They are responsible for everything in their lives, from keeping a budget to maintaining their grades, which would be great preparation for adulthood. Finally, this is a great opportunity to make new friends from all over the world. While abroad, the students will not only meet local students but also other international students who are as far from home as they are. In conclusion, it is indeed very beneficial to study abroad if given the opportunity. Vignes Guided Writing Question 2 It is undeniable that bringing smartphones to school has many advantages, but there are disadvantages that could be detrimental to students as well. A great advantage is that smartphones can enrich the learning experience of a student. Students can get information, watch educational videos as well as have access to lots of useful apps. Besides that, it is also great during emergencies when students need to get in touch with their parents or guardian quickly. However, smartphones can be a huge distraction in class. Students may be less inclined to pay attention to the teacher when all sorts of entertainment are right at their fingertips. Furthermore, there might be less social interaction between students as everyone would be glued to their phones. In my opinion, while there are disadvantages, there are more benefits to having smartphones in school especially in terms of education. It is up to the school to implement some necessary rules so that students do not abuse the privilege. I usually get books and stationery through online shops because they tend to be cheaper. Furthermore, if I buy a certain amount, I will get free delivery. This is very convenient for me since I do not have to spend extra on transport. As for personal care items and snacks, I usually buy them at a hypermarket. This is because the prices are usually cheaper and I can get all my things under one roof. This would save me time and effort to go to other places to shop. As my parents are card members of the hypermarket, I sometimes get members’ discounts and free gifts. In terms of entertainment, I am an avid movie-goer, so I joined a membership programme at a cineplex. As a member, I get some privileges including students’ discounts and free tickets on my birthday. One advantage of learning music is it builds language skills. This is because as students learn to play their instrument, they will be accustomed to the different sounds that they would not have recognised before. This helps to train the students’ ears for nuances and subtle sounds of language. Besides that, music helps to increase students’ IQs. It is proven that students’ IQs increase even after a few weeks of musical training. Music lessons require hours of concentration and patience. Students need to persevere even when things are not going well. This teaches them discipline. Additionally, students need to use their bodies to keep the rhythm going when they play the instruments. They also need to coordinate different motions with their hands at the same time. Hence, they are able to develop strength and coordination. Furthermore, music promotes social skills. Students usually learn to play music in a group in school. They have to learn to work together to achieve a common goal. Finally, music exposes students to other cultures. Students will get the opportunity to learn music from various parts of the world, be it African drumming or Argentine tango. It is a gateway to understand different cultures. Well, there are a lot of things you can do here. Most teens our age go to the recreation park behind the school. If you like to jog, there is a 3-km jogging track. There is also a skate park if you like to skateboard or rollerblade. Or you can just simply enjoy a stroll or cycle round the lake. When you are in the park, remember not to litter everywhere. Also, no fishing in the lake! Hope you enjoy your day there. See you! Malik Strategi A+ English Tg4 Ans.indd 137 20/10/2023 1:37 PM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI MU BAKTI SDN. BHD. 138 Guided Writing Question 2 Students who participate in sports from a young age reap many benefits. Sports can give one a great start in life. One only needs to consider the rise of obesity due to a sedentary lifestyle among children to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Participating in sports will give students the opportunity to be active, to keep fit and trim and to develop good muscle tone. Sports also help students develop good motor skills and coordination. By kicking or catching a ball, swinging a bat and shooting a ball through a hoop, one can become more agile, limber and even graceful. Students who participate in sports will develop a sense of pride in their achievements. They do not have to win competitions to feel a sense of accomplishment. Completing and participating in a sporting event itself will be a great confidence booster. Hence, students should definitely be encouraged to take up sports. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The train is a comforting and relaxing mode of transport. You can enjoy a scenic view during your journey as the railway line usually passes the villages and countryside. You can also take a walk along the aisle between coaches to stretch your legs at any time. You are usually served a buffet meal at the dining coach. Restrooms are also available. It is overall a reliable and safe mode of transport but travels at a slower pace. As for the bus, there are a variety of bus types to choose from such as the express bus, coach and double-decker bus. The bus travels to more locations and has more time slots which is very convenient. Generally, travelling by bus is more affordable too. Depending on the type of bus, you are served snacks and a drink during your journey. However, the travel time usually depends on traffic and a bus sometimes has occasional stops along the way. I would prefer to travel by train as I would like to enjoy a comfortable and scenic journey. Although it may take longer, I think it is a safer choice. 139 Guided Writing Question 2 I would like our class to visit Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. It is one of Malaysia’s most popular theme parks with both wet and dry land and is definitely worth a visit. There are a variety of rides as well as activities, so we can easily find those that suit us. We only need to pay the entrance fee to enjoy these rides all day long. We can meet at the entrance in the morning, have fun on the rides, have lunch together and then continue with the rides until evening. It is also nearby, so all of us would not have a problem getting there. I think the theme park would be a great place for a day trip because it gives us a chance to release stress and have a good time with our classmates before we enter Form 5 next year. At the cinema 7 Give reasons for your choice Better experience – big screen, surround sound, better focus and concentration, bring families together (Accept all suitable answers.) C I enjoy watching comedy because it helps me to destress. Since I already lead quite a stressful life, I prefer to watch something lighthearted and fun instead of heavy or complicated movies. One of my favourite movies is School of Rock. It tells the story of a struggling musician who is in need of money. To earn an income, he pretends to be a substitute teacher in a private school. He learns that most of the students in his class can play musical instruments and starts a rock band with them. I love the movie because it has a good storyline and a good cast. They are funny and have a good chemistry with each other. Besides that, it also teaches good life lessons such as determination, friendship and the danger of telling lies. I love the soundtrack too. When it comes to watching movies, I prefer to watch at the cinema. The dark theatre, big screen and surround sound all provide a better experience for movie-goers. I am also able to concentrate on the movie better since everyone is focused on the screen. Finally, going to the cinema can be a nice and enjoyable family outing. It brings families together. As soon as we checked in and got our rooms, we immediately jumped straight into the sea for a swim! It was awesome swimming in crystal azure water! We also tried some activities such as parasailing – my heart almost popped out! – jetskiing and snorkelling too. Other than that, we filled our tummies with delicious seafood. We really had a wonderful time. I would totally recommend going there with your family. Take care! Nabil Guided Writing Question 2 Losing weight is an uphill task for many people. However, if we do not take care of our weight, it can lead to obesity, which can lead to heart diseases, high blood pressure and even diabetes. Hence, here are the dos and don’ts of losing weight. It is important that you ask your doctor how much weight you should lose. Determine the amount and then set realistic goals. Small weight losses have shown to be beneficial and can help you stay motivated to lose weight. Avoid going on a crash diet as it tends to lead to greater weight gain in the future. Instead, make gradual changes in eating habits as it promotes long-term loss of body fat. Eat a variety of food every day to get the proper nutrition and be sure to exercise. Once you have achieved your desired weight, do not go back to an unhealthy lifestyle. Stick to these healthy habits to maintain your weight. Our park was one of the best in town but of late, the condition of the park has deteriorated to a very sorry state. Firstly, I would like to highlight the vandalised facilities. One of the swings and the see-saw have been damaged by some irresponsible people. Besides that, the rubbish in the park has not been collected on a regular basis. The uncollected rubbish has attracted flies and stray dogs and cats scavenging for food, leaving the park in a stench. Other than that, the grass in the park is overgrown and has not been cut for a long time. Visitors to the park are afraid there may be rats or even snakes in the long grass. Finally, the toilets in the park are dirty and unhygienic. The awful stench from the toilets prevents visitors from using them. The flushes are not working and the sinks are broken. It is hoped that the authorities would take immediate action to improve the condition of the park. It is a good idea to hire a few security guards. They can patrol the area to make sure there is no more vandalism happening. Secondly, I would suggest to have more bins located around the park to keep visitors from littering everywhere. It would be good if the rubbish is collected every two days, instead of once a week, on a regular basis. The grass in the park needs regular trimming too. Finally, the authorities should also think of hiring more cleaners to clean the toilets and have a staff to man the toilets every day. I hope the authorities will take this issue seriously and take immediate action. Thank you. Reading 1 It requires time and great effort and much of gardening is learned by trial and error. 2 This is because the trapped water can cause mould, mildew fungal and bacterial to diseases spread. 3 It helps improve the drainage of heavy clay soil, increases the moisture and adds high quality nutrients. 4 A good way is always to opt for natural materials such as shredded bark. 5 The best ingredient for a successful garden is proper soil pH. 6 This is because certain plants have specific pH requirements and won’t thrive unless the soil pH falls within a particular range. There are a few ways to promote it but I think the best way would be to put it up on social media due to its tremendous influence these days. An activity that you could do is to organise a tree-planting day at school. You only need a few packets of seeds and a suitable area to plant them. Try to spread love for the environment to everyone in your school and get their cooperation to make this campaign a success. Have a great time! Your cousin, Michelle Guided Writing Question 2 Recently, our school organised a recycling campaign which was held on 16 – 20 June. All the students in our class participated in the campaign. The objectives of the campaign were to create awareness of the importance of recycling and to help reduce waste to preserve the Earth’s resources. One benefit of the campaign is that it can help generate income for the school. All the recyclable items that were collected have been sold to recycling centres for quite a profit. This can be put into good use such as buying new books for the school library, beautifying the school garden and other upgrade works. Besides that, it can also help promote a closer bond among students in the school. All of us came together for a common cause. In conclusion, it is hoped that the campaign will continue every year and more and more students would be proactive in preserving the environment beyond this campaign. You can try to make time for your assignments and extracurricular activities. Here are some tips to help you deal with your problem. Firstly, you need to have a timetable. A timetable will help you manage your time for your extracurricular activities and your studies. Always remember if a person fails to plan, he plans to fail. This will also reassure your mother that you can cope. There are many ways you can do revision. You do not need to revise your work all by yourself. You can have group discussions with your friends. I would advise you to meet after school and study with your friends. I’m sure your friends will help you feel better and more encouraged. It’s good to attend tuition classes for the weaker subjects as you will be able to get extra coaching and exam tips. Finally, it is important that you learn to manage your time well. Make a schedule of all your activities and try to stick to it. All the best! Your cousin, Ken Siong Guided Writing Question 2 Many people believe that pets in shelters are unhealthy or have behavioural problems. However, this is not true. There are many benefits of rescuing a pet from animal shelters. One rewarding benefit is that your kind act will be returned several times over by the loving and devoted nature of the animal you adopt. They will provide companionship, loyalty and love. Furthermore, the cost of adopting a pet at an animal shelter is usually inexpensive compared to buying one. There are of course factors to consider when adopting a pet. Firstly, you should look for the specific qualities and characteristics of the pet that are compatible with yours. You should also find out about the animal’s history as much as possible so that there would be no surprises later. I believe everyone should consider adopting because it would help the pet overpopulation problem considerably. It would also help save the lives of the pets. Filzah Part 2: Guided Writing Question 2 (Suggested answer) Social networks have become an essential part of the private and professional lives of many people all over the world. One of the most obvious benefits of using social networks is that you can keep in touch with your friends easily, quickly and cheaply. To use social networks wisely, first and foremost, it’s important to be mindful of the time spent on them. This eliminates the need for separate notebooks or papers, making it easier to keep track of important information. • Portability: We can access e-books on a variety of devices, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This means we can carry our entire textbook library with us wherever we go, eliminating the need for heavy backpacks and the risk of forgetting materials at home. • Affordable E-books are often less expensive than traditional textbooks, which can save us and our families a significant amount of money over time. E-books also are less expensive than printed textbooks, offering us savings. Sometimes, they are free of charge. • Accessibility: E-books are accessible to all kinds of students. They are also created for students with visual impairments or other disabilities, as many devices offer built-in features such as screen readers and adjustable font sizes. • Interactive: Since e-books are digital, they’re not confined to the printed page. That means they can integrate video components, quizzes with real-time scoring, and homework response questions all in one place. An interactive experience helps the material stick better and makes for more engaging, impactful learning. • Convenient E-books can be easily updated and revised, allowing you to make changes and adjustments as needed throughout the school year. Just a decade ago, YouTubers are regarded as nothing more than just kids wasting their time making videos and posting them on the Internet. But today, it is a different story. Let’s listen to the reasons why these four young people choose to be YouTubers. Radhi : Hi, I’m Radhi. As a YouTuber, you are your own boss. You have creative control over your content, decide your hours and where you want to work. It is up to you if you want to work with a team or do everything yourself. You get to decide. Kim : Hello, I’m Kim. When applying for jobs, young people often get rejected because most employers today look for people who have experience. We find ourselves wondering how to acquire the experience if we don’t get hired for jobs that build the experience. But YouTube doesn’t require any of that. If you want to be a YouTuber, just pick a mobile phone with a good video camera and go for it. Sarah : Hi, my name is Sarah. One thing I notice is that the videos we post can help build a community. You can create a personal connection with people and let them know you and see how you react to certain situations. Some YouTubers even share their everyday lives. There is something about sharing a video and discovering that it helps others overcome their difficulties. Chong : Hi, I’m Chong. It can also add another source of revenue to your blog. Azri : Hello, Aini. It’s all right. No worries at all. Aini : Well, to make up for it, I would like to invite you for lunch today. Azri : That’s great! I’m all for it. So where are we going? Aini : I have two places in mind and you can decide. The choice is between Aloha Café and Busy Bee Restaurant. Aloha Café is the new outlet located on Jalan Ipoh, while Busy Bee is on Jalan Pinang. Azri : What about the menu? Aini : You can choose from over 60 local and continental dishes from their ala carte menu at Aloha Café. However, if you prefer local dishes then we can go to Busy Bee Restaurant. Azri : Well, how about their dishes? Aini : Aloha Café serves a variety of dishes including your favourite Baked Cheese Rice and their signature dish, Pandan Chicken. And you won’t believe it – Busy Bee also has their signature dish – Baked Curry Prawns – your other favourite dish. Azri : This a very difficult decision to make. What about the desserts? Aini : You are going to be spoilt for choice. Aloha Café has a menu for desserts and the most popular one is Caramel Pudding while Honey Ice Cream is a bestseller at Busy Bee. Azri : Wow! That is indeed mouth-watering. Aini : By the way, you will also be mesmerised by the soft and sentimental music at Aloha Café while at Busy Bee – you are going to like it – K-pop! Azri : All right, then it is easy to make a choice! Busy Bee it is! Aini : Let’s go! Unit 5 Globetrotting PBD Practices 1 Good day, passengers. Unit 6 Time out PBD Practices 1 Mother : How was the basketball game? Did you try your new trainers? Adli : No. We couldn’t have a game today. Mother : What happened? Was it raining? There was a slight drizzle here after you left for the game. Adli : It did drizzle for a while but it wouldn’t have been a problem for us. The court was being washed. So we decided to wait for a while and tried to fix the net. Then we waited for another half an hour and got tired of waiting. In the end, we decided to call off the game for today. Mother : Well, perhaps you could have a game tomorrow. 2 Trisha : Hi, Sam! What can we look forward to in this coming episode of Nature’s Best? Sam : Hi, Trisha! There are two things you shouldn’t miss this week. One is the Green Leatherback Turtles. Did you watch the polar bears in last week episode? Trisha : Of course, I did. It was an excellent episode. Those bears were enormous but the cubs were pretty cute. Sam : Well, in this episode, we’ll be going to the jungles of Sarawak to find out more about the crocodiles in the rivers. Trisha : Well, I’m not a fan of these reptiles. I think I’ll give it a miss. 3 Jason : What would you like to do here? It seemed a bit crowded. Alex : Well, I thought we could play a game of table football. But it looked like there is a queue waiting. I doubt we could play. Jason : You’re right. Anyway, table football isn’t my cup of tea. Let’s play something else. Alex : What about a game of chess? Jason : Hmm… it’s a boring game. You’ve never seen me playing chess even once, right? Alex : Well, what do you want to play, then? Jason : We can play Scrabble. What do you think? There are a few sets on the table. Alex : Why not? Strategi A+ English Tg4 Ans.indd 145 20/10/2023 1:37 PM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. 146 4 Adam : Deena, I’m sorry for being late. I overslept. Deena : It’s half past one, Adam! We’re going to miss the first part of the workshop. We’d better hurry to get in. Adam : But can I get a quick bite first? It won’t take long. I’m so hungry. Deena : Oh my! Look at the queue at the food stall. It will take you another hour before you get your food. Boy : There’s a food vending machine over there. I’ll get some crackers. Deena : All right, but hurry! The workshop will start in half an hour. I’ll wait for you here. 5 Ayesha : Hi, Sean! Did you watch the final of the Young Talent show? Sean : Yes, I did, Ayesha. It was awesome. Some of the contestants were so creative and talented. Ayesha : I thought contestant number 15 would have won. He had us all in awe with his magic tricks. Sean : I agree with you. But contestant number 8 was equally good with her mesmerising peacock dance. She was the runner-up. Ayesha : You’re right. It was really a tough night for all the judges. But in the end, it was contestant number 12 with his death-defying acrobatic act in mid-air that won the judges’ votes. Unit 7 Mother nature PBD Practices The sun bear is the smallest and least studied bear. It is also the most arboreal bear and second rarest bear species after the giant panda. Their name comes from the pale horseshoe shape on their chests which resembles the setting or rising sun. Sun bears have a very long tongue measuring 20 to 25 cm. This enables them to extract honey from bee hives earning them an alternative name, ‘honey bear’. They can be found in tropical lowland forests and one of the species can be found in South East Asia. They build nests in trees to sleep in. They are omnivores and mainly eat invertebrates, fruit and honey. However, the number of sun bears in our country has declined by at least 30% in the last 30 years and they are at high risk of extinction. Sun bears face three main threats: capture, commercial hunting and habitat loss. Sun bears are hunted for their body parts such as their gall bladders and bear paws. They are also the smallest bear in the world. As such, their cubs are considered incredibly cute and there is a high demand for them as pets. Finally, sun bears are losing their home due to plantation development, illegal logging and human-caused fires. End-of-Year Assessment Part 1 Question 1 You will hear a monologue. It is going to be my brother’s birthday. What can I give him? I don’t have much money. I have looked all through the shops, and I have not found anything that I think he would like or that I can afford. I have thought very hard about what to buy for him. Will he prefer a tie or a mini perfume set? Hmmm Question 2 You will hear two friends talking about school. Adlan : That school discussion about changes the teachers have made was interesting, wasn’t it? Devan : I suppose, although I was hoping they’d say we don’t have to wear school uniform any more. Adlan : Me too, but that was never likely, was it? The new afterschool clubs sound great, though. I’d like to join one. Devan : What I like is that there’ll now be hot food during lunch, so we don’t have to eat cold food any longer. Adlan : Well, I’ll probably still take my lunch box as I always get hungry before lunch! I was hoping they’d change the rule about arriving late. Sometimes I miss the bus and get into trouble. Devan : Well, these changes do make our lives better! Adlan : Definitely! Question 3 You will hear Sasha sending Julie a voice note. Sasha : Hi Julie, I just heard about your netball injury. I wasn’t at the match on Saturday, so I had no idea what had happened until the coach told us this morning. Poor you! I was going to call you last night, but I was out at a family function. I didn’t know netball could be so risky! Anyway, as it’s your leg that you’ve hurt, I guess you may be finding it quite difficult to get around. If I were you, I’d be taking it easy! I’m happy to drop by and help you with schoolwork. Question 4 You will hear a footballer talking about his career. Presenter : Well, Ronald, how do you feel when you look back at your career? Ronald : I’ve been fortunate enough to play for some top teams. It’s a pity that I was injured earlier in the season. If I hadn’t missed those games, I might have broken the club record for most games played. I’ve had a few yellow cards, sure, but my discipline record has been good, I think. All in all, I’m most pleased about being voted player of the year last season. Question 5 You will hear an interview. Host : Tell us about your new role. Actress : Oh, I think it’ll be brilliant playing a baddy! It’s a fantastic character part, it really is! It’s more challenging than the motherly character I always play. I have never played this character before. Host : That’s awesome. When will the movie be screened? Actress : It will hit the theatres in September 23. Host : What about the plan to make another movie in December? Actress : Oh yes. We are still deciding on the script. The climax needs some improvisation. My director is working on it. Question 6 You will hear a blind man talking about experiencing travel through his sense of smell. I’m blind, so I rely on my other senses a lot, especially when I travel. It’s all very well asking your companions to describe a scene but I was eager to find my own way of experiencing all the new places I visit. So I decided to focus on smelling them instead. It wasn’t easy focusing my attention this way at first, but now I can recall a place Strategi A+ English Tg4 Ans.indd 146 20/10/2023 1:37 PM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI MU BAKTI SDN. BHD. 147 instantly when I smell certain things. Sea spray reminds me of South Africa, and fresh coffee of Colombia. I’m convinced this method makes my travel experiences more intense and significant. Question 7 You hear Suzy talking to her teacher about studying history at the university. Mr Stephen : So, what are you going to study at the university, then? Suzy : History. I wasn’t sure whether it’d be useful for a career at first, but you can’t overlook the way history helps us gain an understanding of the world around us and why it is the way it is today. I mean, if we understand how people have lived through the ages, we can make informed decisions about the present. That doesn’t mean I’m thinking of a career as a politician or leader, but I’m sure I’ll learn how to make reasoned arguments which is bound to help me in whatever field I work in later. Part 2 Interviewer : Shreeya, how did you become interested in yoga? Shreeya : Soon after I had my knee cap replacement surgery, I started getting severe back pain and tried everything to treat it, but with no success. Then a friend suggested yoga. I was in so much pain that I didn’t need much persuading, and after a few weeks, my back felt better as the pain reduced. I’d never been a great one for exercise, in fact never had any exercise regime before, so I was truly amazed because I really enjoyed it. Interviewer : When did you decide you were going to teach professionally? Shreeya : About three years ago. I was a school teacher at the time and run yoga sessions in my spare time at a local sports centre. Then I was offered the chance to rent a room in a leisure centre, so I gave up the teaching job to do yoga full time. Interviewer : What’s the most rewarding part of your work? Shreeya : Well, I always enjoyed being a teacher and I get the same satisfaction from being a yoga instructor. I like helping people to discover what interests them. I love seeing people transform from being in physical or emotional pain into positive, healthy individuals. Some become passionate about yoga. I find that particularly satisfying. Interviewer : Now what changes would I notice in my physical and mental health if I took up yoga? Shreeya : It’s an excellent means of improving your strength and flexibility and it can help relieve aches and pains. I’ve also lowered my blood pressure since doing it. It can help relieve stress, and lots of clients say their memory and concentration have improved since they’ve started. Interviewer : Presumably, people notice the benefits of yoga in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Shreeya : Yes. Yoga is about achieving balance and this applies to your life generally. We should take steps to become positive, to avoid people who make us feel bad about ourselves, to see the best in others and be kind. Interviewer : What about diet? Shreeya : Personally, I prefer local. Fresh, locally produced food is likely to be healthier and less expensive. I am also not a fan of organic food. When we’re eating, we should enjoy our food. Don’t rush your meals so you can watch TV. And although the bar of chocolate or biscuit won’t kill you, eat things like that in moderation. Interviewer : What advice would you give to anyone thinking of taking up yoga? Shreeya : I’d say speak to people who have done it and ask them how they’ve benefited. Sometimes that’s more persuasive than asking an instructor. Find a local centre and see if they have introductory sessions. But the most important thing is to give it a chance. Do it for at least three months. Then you’ll know for sure whether it’s your thing or not. Yoga has helped me to transform in every way possible, I bet it will help you too. Part 3 Speaker 1 Sophia I always feel happier coming home from school because I know my full-grown Persian cat will be jumping in excitement to see me. It’s true that school schedules can be hectic at times but even at my grumpiest, playful Mimi always has its ways to turn my frowns upside down. Truly, cats are adorable! Speaker 2 Alia My brother insisted on having a pair of sugar gliders as his 12th birthday gift, so we did get him one. He was all hyped up on the first few days of taking care of the gliders, but all too soon, he noticed that keeping them requires extra patience, responsibility and special care. He probably wasn’t ready for that, so in the end, I had to parent the pair. The best part is that I never liked to have a pet. Speaker 3 Barath Some days, I love my rabbit more than my two little twin brothers. At least he would never roll his eyes at me or steal away my personal items. In fact, he loves my singing and would never be embarrassed by it. I always find playing with my pet at night a stress buster. It gives me calmness. Speaker 4 Suzanne As for me, having a pet is a terrific idea for my small family. We enjoy taking care of our poodle, from bathing him weekly to finding him a good outfit! Being the only child, I consider Tommy to be my best friend and he always knows how to make me laugh with his tricks. He is such an adorable listener and an awesome buddy. Speaker 5 Priya I have seen many teens wanting to have a pet but eventually they get bored and ignore them at home. In some cases, they even leave the cats or dogs unattended while being away for a long holiday. I really think it is inappropriate and unacceptable. One must be truly committed. Perhaps it’s best to remind ourselves that like humans, pets need to be cared for, too. Strategi A+ English Tg4 Ans.indd 147 20/10/2023 1:37 PM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI MU BAKTI SDN. 148 Part 4 Interviewer : I’m with Joan Chen, one of the youngest surfers from Pahang who’s going to tell us about her favourite sport, kitesurfing. Joan, what is kitesurfing, exactly? Joan : It’s just what the name suggests, you stand on a surfboard in the sea, and a kite above you catches the wind and pulls you along as you surf the waves. It’s great fun! Interviewer : So what appeals to you about it? Joan : Well, let’s see. I’m interested in keeping fit. I go running every evening, and I enjoy that. In fact, it’s built up my strength for kitesurfing. And luckily, I live by the sea, so I’m able to kitesurf several times a week if I wish. But I’ve discovered it’s also had a really positive effect on my studies, which is strange but great! If I know I’m going kitesurfing, I try double hard to get stuff done. This means I’m keeping up my fitness and not sitting too long at my desk. Interviewer : But it’s not a sport that would suit everyone, is it? Joan : Well, I don’t know. Most people do enjoy it once they try it. I mean, you need to be somewhere with good access to water to do it and obviously, that’s not straightforward for everyone. And even if you are, not everywhere offers kitesurfing facilities. I have to admit, the equipment you have to get initially isn’t exactly cheap but once you’ve bought it, you’re all set! And if you travel a lot to kitesurf, for example, by plane, it’s possible to carry what you need with you if you get a kite bag with wheels and take your board apart. Interviewer : Did you love kitesurfing the first time you tried it? Joan : Oh, my first day was great. I knew my instructor was trying to get older people to try it, so even though I wasn’t the youngest person, there were a number of people who were considerably older than me. Out on the water, it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. I mean, it looked like hard work to hold on to the kite from the shore, and I didn’t have great muscle power in my arms at that stage, but actually I was perfectly strong enough to do it. I was pretty exhausted after that first session, though! Interviewer : And you learnt really quickly after that, didn’t you? Joan : Yeah, I was up on my board and kitesurfing along the water after a week or so, although I was told most people do take longer than that. But it was such great fun, and I was just so keen to get going that I definitely wasn’t prepared to fail! And I don’t think I was particularly gifted at it either, it was just a matter of hard work to improve! Interviewer : And is kitesurfing a very sociable sport? Joan : Oh, yes! I’ve met great people while I’ve been doing it. I mean, unlike what you’d perhaps expect, they’re not all great water sports fans who’ve been doing it for years. But because they have a shared passion for the sport, they just get along. The people in my group don’t compete against each other, either, and will soon help you get launched if you’re having problems. It’s a real community! Interviewer : So do you have any advice for people taking up the sport? Joan : Well, I actually took some additional swimming lessons with a certified instructor at the beginning, because I realised I wasn’t confident about handling things like currents and tides in the water. That’s really important for your safety, so if you have a similar problem, I’d say try that. Once you’ve got over that, and learnt some techniques to stay on the board behind your kite, you’ll soon be away. Interviewer : So tell us more about your plans! Joan : Well, I’ve decided my future lies with kitesurfing, so I’m considering becoming a qualified instructor. But first, to build up my skills a bit more, some friends and I are busy preparing for a visit to South American countries, where the beaches are supposed to be fantastic for the sport. I hear there will be plenty of competitions there if we want to take part, although I may just wait till I get there to decide! Interviewer : Thanks, Joan!
