72 B Look at the words in bold in the text and try to guess what they mean. Then check the meaning of each word. 1 preserve – to maintain its original state 2 hapless – unfortunate 3 chaotic – in a state of confusion 4 drenched – thoroughly wet/soaked 5 placid – calm with little movement 6 harnessed – controlled using bands or ropes 7 careening – moving forward quickly while moving from side to side 8 manoeuvre – to move skillfully and carefully The trickiest point was the starting line where racers must wait for the offi cial start whistle as they attempt to manoeuvre the heavy beasts into position and keep them calm. After that, it depends on the buffaloes and how they match the boys’ skills. Urged on with a small metal-tipped bamboo whip, the usually placid animals are unrecognisable as they rampage down the watery fi eld. Races are divided according to weight and size with the heaviest creatures slightly slower to a practiced eye but requiring signifi cantly more skill to control. And the boys who work and train the buffaloes for weeks in preparation do not always have the upper hand. Numerous boy racers got off to false starts as the hapless racers were literally dragged through the mud. The buffaloes often looked close to careening out of control as they thundered across the fi nish line, scattering any spectator foolish enough to stand nearby. One boy racer admitted that the tradition can be hazardous but he said he would be racing two of his family’s buffaloes. “They are over two years old and they won the race last year,” he said, grinning from ear-to-ear, adding that he trained with them every three or four days. “I compete in the buffalo racing because I’m trying to preserve our Chonburi traditions about good rice, good buffalo.” SoW: Lesson 79 LS 4.1.3 Explain the main points of an idea or argument A Look at the types of movies below. 73 B Now, answer the following questions and complete the table. 1 What type of movie do you like to watch? Comedy 2 Why do you like that genre? • Helps to destress • Lighthearted and fun 3 What is your favourite movie? School of Rock 4 Give a brief synopsis. A musician in need of money pretends to be a substitute teacher in a private school. He learns that most of the students can play musical instruments and starts a rock band with them. 5 Why do you love the movie? Good storyline, good cast, teaches valuable life lessons, good soundtrack 6 Do you prefer watching movies at home or at the cinema? At the cinema 7 Give reasons for your choice. Better experience – big screen, surround sound, better focus and concentration, bring families together (Accept all suitable answers.) C Write a paragraph using notes from the table above. I enjoy watching comedy because it helps me to destress. Since I already lead quite a stressful life, I prefer to watch something lighthearted and fun instead of heavy or complicated movies. One of my favourite movies is School of Rock. It tells the story of a struggling musician who is in need of money. To earn an income, he pretends to be a substitute teacher in a private school. He learns that most of the students in his class can play musical instruments and starts a rock band with them. I love the movie because it has a good storyline and a good cast. They are funny and have a good chemistry with each other. Besides that, it also teaches good life lessons such as determination, friendship and the danger of telling lies. I love the soundtrack too. When it comes to watching movies, I prefer to watch at the cinema. The dark theatre, big screen and surround sound all provide a better experience for movie-goers. I am also able to concentrate on the movie better since everyone is focused on the screen. Finally, going to the cinema can be a nice and enjoyable family outing. It brings families together. 77 You might think you know a thing or two about K-pop if you’ve listened to Gangnam Style. But K-Pop is so much more than this one song. Ingenious approaches to music videos, genuine talent, and pure hard work set K-Pop apart from any other genre of music present nowadays. Here are some of the reasons why K-pop is so popular. If you’ve seen any K-pop music videos, the first few things that catch your attention are the intense choreography, catchy songs and unique fashion. K-pop stars bring a whole new meaning to fashion. They never shy away from making a statement, and they have a decidedly exceptional way of interpreting current trends. Since most K-pop music videos have a certain concept behind it, their costumes and sets reflect just that. Almost all Korean song lyrics and music videos tell stories rather than just random dancing and meaningless choruses. A great example of this is the WINGS album by the boy group, BTS which contains themes of youth and adolescence. There are stories of each of the seven members of the group struggling with a different aspect of growing up and learning about life. You don’t have to worry about not understanding the words because as soon as you hear the catchy beats, they’re going to be stuck in your head and you won’t be able to stop singing them despite the language barrier. K-pop idols not only sing, they can also perform dance numbers so complicated that they would usually require professional dancers. This takes an insane amount of hard work, practice, and skill, but they are well-known for performing these routines live. Another admirable quality of K-pop artistes is the preparation. They are usually groomed and mentored by managers or agents for years at a time before recording their first song. G.Soul, a Korean R&B singer, trained for 15 years before releasing his music. Intensive training makes these young artistes seasoned performers by the time they debut. Aside from a music career, K-pop artistes almost always venture into acting as well. While you can certainly find stars who can’t act very well, usually a true K-pop idol is just as skilled as an actor as they are as a singer and dancer. Furthermore, they often make TV appearances through interviews or variety programmes. In fact, a lot of the famous groups have their own variety shows and they do live streams frequently. Through this, fans can connect with their idols more. K-pop is well-known to put forward highly talented groups with an original concept. For example, EXO, a very successful boyband is made up of two groups – EXO K and EXO M. EXO K performs and promotes the band’s music in Korean, while EXO M focuses on Mandarin. By recording every song in two different languages, this boyband multiplies the band’s potential audience immeasurably. In conclusion, K-pop is not just a style of music. It is part of the Korean culture and slowly becoming a world culture, popular predominantly among the younger generation alongside those who are young at heart. 79 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about cycling. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Cycling Cycling is a low impact aerobic exercise that offers a wealth of benefits. It also varies in intensity, making it suitable for all levels. (1) f . Cycling is a wonderful workout that keeps you active. It can help shape a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. Firstly, cycling regularly can help lower body fat levels, which promotes healthy weight management. Plus, you’ll increase your metabolism and build muscle, which allows you to burn more calories, even while at rest. (2) b . Cycling also works your core muscles, including your back and abdominals because maintaining your body upright and keeping the bike in position requires a certain amount of core strength. Strong abdominals and back muscles support your spine, increase stability, and improve comfort while cycling. (3) D . Focusing on the road while you’re cycling helps develop concentration and awareness of the present moment. This may help take your focus away from the worries of your day. (4) h . Exercise releases endorphins, which in turn help you feel better while lowering stress levels. Start your day with a healthy activity like cycling, which wakes you up by boosting your circulation and allows you to start your day with a sense of accomplishment. You may feel more inclined to make healthy, positive choices as the day progresses. While cycling is generally a good activity, there are some precautions that you have to take. (5) a . Therefore, when possible, ride on lanes reserved for cyclists and always follow traffic laws. Invest in a quality helmet and any other protective gear you may require to reduce the impact if you fall. Air pollution is another concern if you’re cycling in the city. Try to cycle on days when the air is cleaner, or ride on less congested roads. (6) G . You can explore your local area without having to face traffic jam. It beats the feeling of boredom that can come from repetitive workouts, too. Appreciate the satisfaction that comes from improving your fitness while having fun. A Since you are cycling on the road, there are safety issues that you have to consider. B Secondly, cycling improves overall function in your lower body and strengthens your leg muscles without overstressing them. C Cycling is a great replacement for transport options that involve sitting in traffic for long periods. D In terms of mental benefits, cycling can ease feelings of stress, depression, or anxiety. E If the weather is in your favour, hop on your bike and go the distance. F You can cycle as a mode of transport, for casual activity, or as an intense, competitive endeavour. G Other than that, cycling is an enjoyable way to stay healthy and in touch with the world around you. H If you find yourself feeling lethargic or stressed, get yourself on your bike for at least 10 minutes. 83 You must answer this question. Question 2 Your class has been discussing Health Awareness Week and your teacher has asked you to write an essay on how students can lose weight. In your essay, you should write about: • the dangers of obesity • the dos of losing weight • the don’ts of losing weight Use all the notes above and given reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style. [Dangers] Losing weight is an uphill task for many people. However, if we do not take care of our weight, it can lead to obesity, which can lead to heart diseases, high blood pressure and even diabetes. Hence, here are the dos and don’ts of losing weight. [Dos] It is important that you ask your doctor how much weight you should lose. Determine the amount and then set realistic goals. Small weight losses have shown to be beneficial and can help you stay motivated to lose weight. [Don’ts] Avoid going on a crash diet as it tends to lead to greater weight gain in the future. Instead, make gradual changes in eating habits as it promotes long-term loss of body fat. Eat a variety of food every day to get the proper nutrition and be sure to exercise. [Conclusion] Once you have achieved your desired weight, do not go back to an unhealthy lifestyle. Stick to these healthy habits to maintain your weight. 86 Dear Sir, I am a concerned resident of Taman Desa Sky and I would like to highlight the poor conditions of the park in our neighbourhood. Our park was one of the best in town but of late, the condition of the park has deteriorated to a very sorry state. Firstly, I would like to highlight the vandalised facilities. One of the swings and the see-saw have been damaged by some irresponsible people. Besides that, the rubbish in the park has not been collected on a regular basis. The uncollected rubbish has attracted fl ies and stray dogs and cats scavenging for food, leaving the park in a stench. Other than that, the grass in the park is overgrown and has not been cut for a long time. Visitors to the park are afraid there may be rats or even snakes in the long grass. Finally, the toilets in the park are dirty and unhygienic. The awful stench from the toilets prevents visitors from using them. The fl ushes are not working and the sinks are broken. It is hoped that the authorities would take immediate action to improve the condition of the park. It is a good idea to hire a few security guards. They can patrol the area to make sure there is no more vandalism happening. Secondly, I would suggest to have more bins located around the park to keep visitors from littering everywhere. It would be good if the rubbish is collected every two days, instead of once a week, on a regular basis. The grass in the park needs regular trimming too. Finally, the authorities should also think of hiring more cleaners to clean the toilets and have a staff to man the toilets every day. I hope the authorities will take this issue seriously and take immediate action. Thank you. We always love to have a beautiful garden with colourful fl owers blooming, well-maintained shrubs and greenery that brings a sense of tranquility and serenity. Creating this perfect garden requires time and great effort and much of gardening is learned by trial and error – for many, mostly error. Here are four common gardening mistakes and how to avoid them. Most garden plants require 2 to 2.5 cm of water per week either from rainfall or supplemental irrigation. While using sprinklers is suitable for lawns, it may put shrubs, annuals, perennials and edibles at risk. Mould, mildew fungal and bacterial diseases spread as water becomes trapped between plant parts or splashes from infected leaves to healthy ones. A better idea is using a snake porous soaker hose made of perforated plastic tubing over the soil. This will direct water to the roots where it is needed. Compost is a gardener’s best friend. It helps improve the drainage of heavy clay soil, increases the moisture and adds high quality nutrients. 87 1 Why is it not easy to create a beautiful garden? It requires time and great effort and much of gardening is learned by trial and error. 2 What is the reason not to use a sprinkler for shrubs, annuals, perennials and edibles? This is because the trapped water can cause mould, mildew fungal and bacterial diseases to spread. 3 How does compost help plants to grow? It helps improve the drainage of heavy clay soil, increases the moisture and adds high quality nutrients. 4 What is a good way to decompose the soil? A good way is always to opt for natural materials such as shredded bark. 5 What is a good ingredient for a successful garden? The best ingredient for a successful garden is proper soil pH. 6 Why must a gardener test the pH value of the soil? This is because certain plants have specifi c pH requirements and won’t thrive unless the soil pH falls within a particular range. PL or add an amount equal to half the removed soil to individual planting holes. You will be surprised how well and healthy your plants would grow. Mulch retains soil moisture, reduces weeds growing, and helps keep soil temperature even. Soil is an essential component of every garden. However, mulching improperly can kill the plants. A good way is always to opt for natural materials such as shredded bark which will enrich the soil as they decompose. As a matter of routine, keep the materials about 6 cm away from the trunks and stems. This is to avoid blocking air circulation and locking in moisture, which would result in rotting. The number one ingredient for a successful garden is proper soil pH. However, there is no one-sizefi ts-all number to strive for. As a home gardener, it is important to test soil pH. This is because certain plants have specifi c pH requirements and won’t thrive unless the soil pH falls within a particular range. Test kits are inexpensive and widely available at garden centres. Pick one and test the soil in each garden bed individually. I hope this gives you some simple tips to follow in your own garden and helps you realise that gardening does not have to be time-consuming or expensive. If you incorporate these tips into your gardening, you will experience the joy, satisfaction and delicious bounty of a garden. ffi fl Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 87 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. Due to illegal poaching and extensive felling of trees in our forests, the population of the Malayan tigers is fast dwindling over the past few decades. There are now less than 200 Malayan tigers left in Malaysia. If we don’t act now, we stand to lose this majestic species that is on the brink of extinction. 4 From the extract, we can conclude that deforestation and illegal hunting A are two ways to help save the Malayan tigers. Contrary to popular belief, it is not easy for leopards to kill their prey. A study which observes a leap of leopards chasing a total number of 112 deer shows that the leopards only managed to kill seven deer. Hence, leopards may go hungry for long periods of time but once they eat, they eat quickly and effi ciently. 1 The phrase ‘contrary to popular belief’ in the extract means A many people believe it and it is true. 91 Teachers play many roles in school. They not only impart knowledge, but also mentor and nurture students, set the tone of their classrooms, create a warm and conducive environment, and most importantly try to inculcate good values and social responsibility among students. Through the Eco-Schools programme (ESP), teachers become Eco-champions to lead and encourage their students to be active and take up more advanced environmental projects. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia education manager of ESP, Jessie Chew said, “The Eco-Schools programme is a fun and educational programme providing structure and flexibility through its methodology and eco-themes.” “The whole-school approach enables students and teachers to combine their knowledge with appropriate skills and attitude to be agents of change. The programme also cultivates a sustainable mindset which they can apply on a daily basis,” she added. Developing environmental responsibility and leadership in students begins in the classroom. Students can learn how to recognise, address and adopt the kinds of change that can positively affect their lives, communities and the rest of the world. The ESP challenges students to engage in tackling environmental problems at the school level where they can see results, encouraging them to realise that they can really make a difference. Eco-Schools programme coordinator of Sekolah Sri Bestari (SSB), Kuala Lumpur, Shamsul Mutaza said, “My interest on the ESP began in 2012 when I attended a camp. I brought the idea back to my school and how time flies – it has been five years since we adopted the initiative. I encourage students to be involved in the decision-making because when they experience a sense of achievement at being able to have a say in the environmental management policies of our school, they feel valued.” Under Shamsul’s leadership, SSB has received the Green Flag award for many of its green practices. The school has been styrofoam-free since 2015, maintains an e-portal to reduce their paper usage, uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper for printing, and many more initiatives driven by the school’s Eco team. Headmistress of Sekolah Kebangsaan Lok Yuk, Inanam, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Elizabeth Lok Fei Ling said that her school has always been a frontier in environmental awareness. Unhappy with the condition of the school when she first joined, she launched an environmental club called Kelab Program Rakan Bumi. “We took small steps when we began. I made sure the club held an environmental activity every month. I heard of ESP in 2012 and saw an opportunity for the school to embark on a meaningful path towards improving its environmental footprint,” she shared. “We signed up in 2013 and I’m happy and proud that our school received the Green Flag award last year.” Elizabeth’s school has implemented many green initiatives such as rainwater harvesting for washing and watering purposes, flower pots made from used plastic bottles for hydroponic planting, river cleanup activity at a nearby village, and the list continues. WWF Malaysia is the national operator of the Eco-Schools programme in Malaysia. For many years, the organisation has been an advocator to educate students and the public on sustainability and environmental conservation. Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. 93 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about single-use plastic. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Single-use plastic Single-use plastic refers to disposable plastic that is designed to be used once and then thrown away or recycled. This includes everything from plastic water bottles and produce bags to disposable plastic razors and plastic ribbon — really any plastic item you use then immediately discard. (1) c . In reality, very few plastic items can be processed into new materials and products. Unlike glass and aluminum, plastic isn’t processed into the same item it was when it was collected by a recycling centre. (2) F . For example, take a plastic water bottle. Most bottles are said to be recyclable but nearly seven out of 10 bottles end up in landfills or tossed away as litter. If you are still not convinced banning plastic is necessary, here are some very solid reasons why it makes sense. Whales and deer have been found dead from ingesting plastic. (3) b . What is more shocking, birds, smaller marine mammals, and even humans have plastic inside their bodies. Why is this so? First, plastic bag takes 10 to 20 years to degrade, while plastic bottle takes almost 500 years. And, even when it’s supposedly gone, its remnants remain. (4) g . It only breaks into smaller and smaller pieces until they’re so microscopic they can be found in our air and our drinking water. (5) h . Reusing bags may work but research has shown that all plastics used in food containers and plastic bottles could release harmful chemicals if used repeatedly, unlike glass or metal. So how do we reduce the use of plastic in our daily lives? For starters, bring your own reusable shopping bags when you go shopping. Always opt for eco-friendly packaging when choosing products. When eating out at restaurants, bring your own reusable straw. Make a habit of bringing your own water bottles instead of purchasing bottled water regularly. (6) e . A Apart from destroying the environment, it’s likely that plastic will end up killing us too if we are not careful. B This is because plastic bags are easily mistaken for food. C While technically these items can be recyclable, that’s hardly the norm. D Plastic is a synthetic chemical compound, and in general, the ingestion of any chemicals into our system does not have a great outcome. E All these may seem like small actions but if each of us practise them, it could bring a considerable change to the environment. F The quality of plastic is downgraded, so eventually, and inevitably, that plastic will still end up in a landfill. G Plastic never breaks down or goes away. H Another reason many countries are prohibiting single-use plastics is because plastic shouldn’t be reused, despite our best intentions. 94 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following text. Read the following web article and answer the questions that follow. What Is Composting? Composting means recycling food and garden waste. The organic materials are broken down gradually at high temperature and once decomposed, the waste matter can be returned into the soil. Compost is nutrient-rich and will help plants grow better. What You Need First, get a compost bin with a lid. Make sure it has aeration holes as air is very important in the decomposition process. Then fi nd a suitable place to put the compost bin as there may be a slight odour. How Long? It takes between 8 – 12 weeks for the waste to decompose. A good compost is black, moist and crumbly. For best results, turn the compost regularly during the decomposition process. 1 Reduces greenhouse gas emission 2 Reduces landfi ll waste, and improves waste management 3 Soil with compost is more nutritious and holds water better 4 Soil with compost reduces erosion, decreasing the risk of landslides 5 Soil with compost needs less watering, fertiliser and pesticides 5 Benefi ts of Composting – what the experts say… Matching and Information Transfer (Reading and Use of English) Paper 1 – Part 5 Adding the Layers To make a good compost, alternate brown and green layers. For the base layer, place twigs or branches. Then, add leaf litter on top of it. Next is the green layer which mainly consists of grass clippings. Add another brown layer with hay. Then, put your kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable or seafood waste. Top it all off with another brown layer of fallen leaves. Strategi A+ English Tg4.indd 94 21/10/2023 11:00 AM U BAKTI SDN. Compost Update May 15, 2024 As I have mentioned in the previous entries, I have started making compost. I love gardening, so adding compost to the (1) soil will defi nitely help my plants grow well. It is also a good way to manage kitchen (2) waste . Composting is not as diffi cult as I thought. First, I got a compost bin with holes for (3) aeration . Then, I started piling up the contents, alternating between brown and green layers. I have to admit, as the waste was decomposing, there was a slight (4) odour . Luckily, I placed the bin at the edge of the garden. I will give another update when the compost is ready. I’m a committee member and I’m trying hard to figure out how to promote the campaign better. Do you have any ideas? Also, could you please suggest an activity that can be carried out during the campaign? What do we need to carry it out? I will be waiting for your reply. Thanks a lot! Write an email to your cousin in about 80 words in the space provided. Hello, Well done for organising such an important campaign! [Suggestion] There are a few ways to promote it but I think the best way would be to put it up on social media due to its tremendous influence these days. [Activity] An activity that you could do is to organise a tree-planting day at school. [Requirement] You only need a few packets of seeds and a suitable area to plant them. Try to spread love for the environment to everyone in your school and get their cooperation to make this campaign a success. Have a great time! Extra Practice 97 You must answer this question. Question 2 You and your classmates have been discussing the success of a recycling campaign that your school has carried out. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about the campaign. In your essay, you should write about: • the date and duration of campaign • objectives of the campaign • benefi ts of the campaign Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in appropriate style. [Date & duration] Recently, our school organised a recycling campaign which was held on 16 – 20 June. All the students in our class participated in the campaign. [Objectives] The objectives of the campaign were to create awareness of the importance of recycling and to help reduce waste to preserve the Earth’s resources. [Benefi ts] One benefi t of the campaign is that it can help generate income for the school. All the recyclable items that were collected have been sold to recycling centres for quite a profi t. This can be put into good use such as buying new books for the school library, beautifying the school garden and other upgrade works. Besides that, it can also help promote a closer bond among students in the school. All of us came together for a common cause. [Conclusion] In conclusion, it is hoped that the campaign will continue every year and more and more students would be proactive in preserving the environment beyond this campaign. PBD Practices 99 SoW: Lesson 95 LS 3.1.3 Guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from clues provided by other words and by context on a wide range of familiar topics A Read the text below. The birth of Penang’s street art renaissance started with one man: Ernest Zacharevic. In 2012, the city council commissioned the then-26-year-old Lithuanian artist to create six murals for the George Town Arts & Culture Festival. Ernest Zacharevic’s style and motivation are distinctive. He is not a Lithuanian version of British street artist Banksy. Banksy’s work tends to have an overtly political message. Zacharevic’s isn’t, and if it had been, it is diffi cult to imagine him having been commissioned to create wall murals in a country such as Malaysia, known for its socially-conservative values. Instead, Zacharevic’s work is focused on art as a feature and a refl ection of the local community. The subjects of his work are the people from the locale where he is painting. He uses existing features of the landscape, and draws on the history of the area, to create his work. Many of his murals depict people climbing into windows, or reaching for things, which were already part of the buildings upon which he is painting. One of his more famous works, which has now faded, was painted onto the side of one of the wooden houses in Chew Jetty and shows two boys in a wooden rowing boat. Ernest Zacharevic’s work has gone on to inspire lots of other local artists to create their own street art. Some of the work is similar to Ernest Zacharevic’s original mural, such as ‘I Want Pau!’ by Malaysian artist, WK Setor. Other artworks are of a very different style. ‘Teach You Speak Hokkien’ is more similar to conventional graffi ti, in the use of spray paints and a lower level of artistic detail. However, the theme of producing artwork which relates to the local community is still common to the more successful artworks which have been produced in Penang. Some of the artworks are very large, like ‘Kung Fu Girl’ on Armenian Street which is over 20 feet in height. Others, like the charming three young ladies on Soo Hong Lane, are more modest. This mural is very clever as it shows girls from the three main races in Malaysia all dressed in traditional Hokkien Chinese outfi ts, sharing and embracing the cultural heritage of Penang irrespective of their own ethnic background. Animals feature heavily in the more recent artworks as well. On Chulia Street, there is a large and very colourful mural of a tiger tugging at a piece of string attached to a nail in the wall. A series of 12 murals was installed by cat welfare charity, 101 Stray Kittens, and features 100 stray cats and 1 rat. The other wellknown, but unattributed, cat painting in the city is of a large ginger cat poking its head out of a window, painted on the corner of an alleyway leading onto Cannon Street. An important feature of street art in Penang is that it is temporary. The climate in Malaysia, damp and hot, is unforgiving to painted surfaces with the colour pigmentation in the paint quickly breaking down. The ballerina mural on Love Lane is a wonderful example of this. The quick fading of artwork is both a challenge and an opportunity. And at the end of 2016, Zacharevic retouched some of his other favourite pieces that had started to fade. Street art, that short-lived medium, has become permanently inked into the life of Penang, a museum in spite of itself, living through its walls. 101 SoW: Lesson 105 LS 4.2.4 Use formal and informal registers appropriate to the target audience in most familiar situations Read the letter below which a boy wrote to an advice column in a magazine. What advice would you give him? Write a reply. Dear Aunt Libra, I need some advice. I used to be a very confident student and have always done well in my examination. However, for the past few weeks, I am getting more nervous and losing my confidence. I am feeling anxious and worried that I will not be able to do well in the exam. I am going to disappoint my parents. Besides, I have so many assignments and projects to complete and the deadlines are getting so near. My mum asked me to give up on my extracurricular activities but I don’t want to. What should I do? How can I find time for everything? Troubled Mind Dear Troubled Mind, I can understand how you feel. Well, the first thing you need to do is not to worry too much or feel too anxious. You can try to make time for your assignments and extracurricular activities. Here are some tips to help you deal with your problem. Firstly, you need to have a timetable. A timetable will help you manage your time for your extracurricular activities and your studies. 105 It wasn’t long ago that the authorities were less than impressed with by the efforts of early street art. Graffiti was regarded as vandalism, and was a punishable offence. Today, however, street art is thriving in many towns and cities across Malaysia. Street art is an artist’s interpretation of the local culture and historic moments. At times, it is also a satire of current political climate. In Malaysia, it is impossible to talk about street art without mentioning Penang. In 2012, Ernest Zacharevic, a Lithuanian artist now based in Penang, was asked to produce a series of six murals for the George Town Festival. Zacharevic’s work combines two- and three- dimensionality, which makes the murals interactive and life-like. The piece called Children on Bicycle for example, has an actual bicycle installed onto the wall, so you can easily pose on it and become part of the art. Since then, other artists have emerged with their own pieces. Adding up to the scene is the Uncle Roti mural, in honour of local bread seller L. Muniandy. The artist is Andhar A. Samah, who was commissioned by the National Art Gallery and the Culture and Arts Department in conjunction with the Balik Pulau Festival 2019. This year, Penang street art took another accolade after it was awarded as the 7th Most Instagrammed City for Street Art in the world. The state known for its rich history and culture – Melaka – has also jumped on the bandwagon with their River Art Project in 2012, where nine groups of graffiti artists collaborated to produce artworks on buildings along Bandar Hilir river. Local artist Charles Cham has a number of notable murals that grace the more famous buildings in Melaka Old Town such as The Orangutan House and the more political Freedom of Speech mural. Just like the street art in Penang, there are many murals in the streets of Melaka that incorporate the element of interaction with the visitors. Ipoh, a former tin mining town, has long lines of olden brickshop houses which is a perfect canvas for artists to pen their colours. In 2014, the Mural Art Trail was introduced in collaboration with Ipoh City Council. Ernest Zacharevic was again commissioned to produce a series of murals. The Mural Art Trail comes with a map and GPS coordinates of the nine murals, a great initiative to promote tourism. More recently, Mural Art’s Lane, the brainchild of Eric Lai, a local schoolteacher, has become the talk of town. Working with numerous artists, Lai aims to celebrate Malaysia’s multicultural heritage through the stunning murals. Other rising places for street art include Kuala Lumpur, Muar, and Sibu. In Kuala Lumpur, the place to go is Chinatown where you will find a series of murals depicting the life of early Chinese settlers. Meanwhile, in Muar, artist Julia Volchkova’s work, Loving Sisters, has been recognised as the biggest mural in Malaysia. Across the peninsula, the Sibu Street Art Festival is held annually since 2016. With the differing styles of the artists, as well as the diverse and personal themes adopted by them in designing and painting the murals, the festival has turned out to be a colourful and diverse project. 107 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about an interesting place in Malaysia. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fits the gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Malaysia’s secret island If you were to mention Sasaran Beach, many Malaysians may not be familiar with the place. However, if you were to say Sky Mirror, undoubtedly many would know it as it has become one of the hidden gems of Malaysia – hidden because during high tide, this secret island is completely invisible to the naked eye. (1) c . During low tide, specifically for 3 – 4 hours in the morning when the water is shallow, a flat sandbank emerges, producing a mirror-like reflection of the sky. (2) h . What is even more surprising is that this mysterious phenomenon only appears on the 1st and 15th of a lunar month, as well as four days before or after these dates. Before Sky Mirror is unearthed by a group of travellers in 2016, it is almost the best-kept secret within the town of Kuala Selangor. While visiting Jeram, these travellers got to know about the ‘mystery island’ from a fisherman. (3) a . Soon after, with the help from residents and the local council, Sky Mirror is officially introduced as a tourist spot and becomes an immediate sensation. If you are interested to visit this magical place, be warned that it is impossible to do so without a tour because the place is located about 30 minutes away from Kuala Selangor in the open sea. (4) e . Fortunately, there are many tour companies that offer a variety of packages to suit your needs. The best activity that Sky Mirror could offer you is of course the perfect opportunity for photography as the shallow water fabricates the perfect reflection and the illusion of scale. (5) g . In fact, the tour package often includes a guide that is more than happy to act as a photographer. The guides are usually prepared with props and would even set the stage for a photoshoot. (6) b . You’ll find plenty of hermit crabs, soldier crabs, bamboo clams, sea anemones, snails, sea snakes and more. The land area is big enough to have a decent walk around, and it is a great opportunity to do some beach combing. The moment you step onto Sky Mirror, the unparalled beauty of the mysterious island will take your breath away. Unlike other mirror lakes, you can physically walk on the seabed, and capture the unique moments in its all-natural reflective surroundings. A They then decided to explore the place and what they discovered was a piece of stunning land that flawlessly reflects the sky. B However, if you are more interested in nature, the sandbank itself is home to a great variety of marine life. C The miracle happens at low tide. D Sky Mirror is a sandbank found in the fishing village of Jeram, Kuala Selangor. E Even if you had your own boat, it would be difficult to locate this secret island as it is not on the map. F What makes it even more spectacular is the light that creates the most flawless reflection in the remaining water on the seabed. G Any photographer will unquestionably find the Sky Mirror to be a photographer’s paradise. H This lends to the name Sky Mirror. Memories A Musical Journey Suria Performing Arts Centre (SPac), Ara Damansara 21 September – 26 October 2024 Memories, a musical tribute honouring the life of Johan Iskandar, is back after a sold-out run in 2017. The show returns for a limited time to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the singer’s passing. The tribute will feature a range of talented Malaysian artistes such as Malaysian Idol fi nalist Aziz Rahman, Arina, Simon Ling and more, who will be backed by a full orchestra as they perform his biggest hits such as ‘Pulang ke Kampung’, ‘The Special Road’, ‘Smile Makes the World Go Round’, and more. The late singer was truly a performer like no other, managing to unite Malaysians with his songs. His illustrious career took him beyond Malaysia to Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and even a few European countries. He put Malaysia on the map by winning the prestigious Asian Popular Music Awards competition at Royal Albert Hall, London in 1989. To this day, there are no other local singers like him. Fantastic! I was his long-time fan and used to go to most of his concerts. This certainly brings back memories. He was known as a singer for all Malaysians. When he performed at a concert in KL in 1986, over 100,000 Malaysians came to watch him! This is a brilliant way to keep his legacy alive. His songs are so memorable that when you hear them, you can’t help but sing them over and over again. Most of his songs were fi lled with social commentaries that are relatable to the average Malaysian. 111 You must answer this question. Question 2 You and your classmates are discussing animal shelters and your teacher has asked you to write an essay to help raise awareness in your school about the importance of adopting animals from shelters. In your essay, you should write about: • benefits of adopting from shelters • factors to consider when adopting • why everyone should adopt Use all the notes above and give reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in appropriate style. [Introduction] Many people believe that pets in shelters are unhealthy or have behavioural problems. However, this is not true. There are many benefits of rescuing a pet from animal shelters. [Benefits] One rewarding benefit is that your kind act will be returned several times over by the loving and devoted nature of the animal you adopt. They will provide companionship, loyalty and love. Furthermore, the cost of adopting a pet at an animal shelter is usually inexpensive compared to buying one. [Factors] There are of course factors to consider when adopting a pet. Firstly, you should look for the specific qualities and characteristics of the pet that are compatible with yours. You should also find out about the animal’s history as much as possible so that there would be no surprises later. [Why] I believe everyone should consider adopting because it would help the pet overpopulation problem considerably. It would also help save the lives of the pets. Part 3: Reading – Extended Text [8 marks] Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages the acquisition of goods and services in everincreasing amounts. Consumerism has become a defi ning characteristic of modern society, shaping our attitudes towards money and spending. In this essay, we will explore the implications of consumerism and emphasise the importance of fi nancial awareness. By understanding the impact of our purchasing decisions and taking control of our fi nances, we can strive for fi nancial well-being and a more sustainable future. Consumerism is fuelled by a culture that encourages excessive consumption and equates material possessions with personal worth. Advertisements, social media, and peer infl uence play signifi cant roles in shaping our desires and spending habits. The pursuit of instant pleasure often leads to impulsive buying and accumulating debt. It is crucial to recognise the infl uence of consumerism and develop a mindful approach towards our consumption patterns. Consumerism, when left unchecked, can have severe fi nancial consequences. Overspending, living beyond our means, and relying on credit cards can lead to mounting debts and fi nancial stress. Many individuals fall into the trap of debts, striving to maintain a certain lifestyle without considering the longterm implications. Lack of fi nancial awareness can hinder our ability to save, invest wisely, and plan for the future, compromising our fi nancial stability and freedom. Financial awareness is the foundation of sound fi nancial management. It involves understanding personal fi nance concepts, budgeting, and making informed decisions. By gaining knowledge about budgeting, saving, and investing, individuals can take control of their fi nancial situation. Financial awareness empowers us to differentiate between needs and wants, prioritise fi nancial goals, and make responsible spending choices. It enables us to build emergency funds, plan for retirement, and make sound investment decisions for long-term fi nancial security. To cultivate fi nancial awareness, it is essential to educate ourselves about personal fi nance principles. This can be done through self-study, attending fi nancial literacy programmes, or seeking guidance from fi nancial advisors. Creating a budget and tracking expenses can help identify areas where we can reduce unnecessary spending. Setting fi nancial goals, such as saving for a down payment on a house or starting a retirement fund, provides motivation and direction. Regularly reviewing fi nancial plans and seeking opportunities to increase fi nancial literacy ensures ongoing growth and adaptability in managing personal fi nances. Financial awareness brings numerous benefi ts. It enables us to make informed decisions, ensuring that our spending aligns with our values and long-term goals. It empowers us to save for emergencies, invest wisely, and build wealth over time. Financially aware individuals are better equipped to handle unexpected expenses, avoid debt traps, and achieve fi nancial independence. Moreover, fi nancial literacy helps us contribute to the economic well-being of our families and communities, fostering a more sustainable and resilient society. Consumerism can exert a powerful infl uence on our fi nancial lives, but by cultivating fi nancial awareness, we can regain control. Through education, budgeting, and making informed choices, we can navigate the path to fi nancial well-being, ensuring a more secure and prosperous future. 118 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about Marie Curie. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A to H the one which fi ts the gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Write your answers in the box provided. MARIE CURIE Marie Curie was one of the most accomplished scientists in history. Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered radium. Radium is an element widely used for treating cancer. Pierre and Marie’s amicable collaboration later helped to unlock the secrets of the atom. Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professor of physics. 27 G Her great excitement for learning prompted her to continue her studies after high school. She became unhappy, however, when she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to receive a higher education, she defi antly left Poland. In 1891, she entered the Sorbonne, a French university. 28 E Marie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of the greatest scientists of her day, one of whom was Pierre Curie. They became friends and later fell in love. 29 C They spent many productive years working together in the physics laboratory. A short time after they discovered radium, Pierre was killed by a horse-drawn wagon in 1906. 30 B Sadly, she recalled their close relationship and the joy that they had shared in scientifi c research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by herself greatly increased her distress. Curie’s feeling of despair fi nally began to fade. She was asked to succeed her husband as a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the fi rst woman to be given a professorship at the world-famous university. She won many accolades. 31 A Although Marie Curie eventually suffered a fatal illness from her long exposure to radium, she never became disillusioned about her work. 32 D A In 1911, she received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolating radium. B Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and endured heart-breaking anguish. C Marie and Pierre were married in 1895. D Marie Curie had dedicated herself to science and to revealing the mysteries of the physical world. E She earned her master’s degree and doctorate in physics there. F Consequently, there is a need to ensure better understanding of physics. G At an early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a happy-go-lucky personality. H Marie Curie did not want to have children. Part 4: Gapped Text [6 marks] Strategi A+ English Tg4 End of Year.indd 118 21/10/2023 10:59 AM U BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI MU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
