It was Sunday today. She told her father to come home at 6:00 p.m. from

“Let’s play a guessing game”, Rashmi suggested. “Yes, why not?”, all
shouted with joy.
“Each one would be blind folded, would touch the tail of an animal or a bird
and would say who the animal was?”, said Rashmi. All agreed.
First of all Ajit was blind folded.
Ajit : (touching the lamb's tail). It is squirrel. (removes the cloth from
eyes) Oh! I am sorry. It is not squirrel. It is lamb.
Every one laughed. It was Ali's turn now.
Ali : (blind folded and touching the tail of dog). It is rabbit.
“No! No! No! You are wrong. It is not rabbit but dog”, shouted the children.
One by one, all tried. Only Lata and Geeta were able to recognise. They were

First, food was served for the pets. The cat got a bowl full of milk. The dog got

Unit-2 Lesson-3
The Hare and the Tortoise
For the Teacher
This is an interesting story with a moral– Slow and Steady wins the race.
Discuss with the children how it can happen?
For the Children
1. Who runs faster?
(i) Hare (ii) Tortoise
2. Write the names of the two children of the class who run fast
and who run slow.
(i) _________________ (ii) _________________
Now read the story.
In the forest of Arawali, there lived many animals peacefully. The king of the
forest, the lion, lived in a cave. He was kind. He was loved and respected by
all the animals. Whenever there was a dispute among animals, they used to
go to the lion. The lion solved their problems fairly.
There were two friends in the forest– a hare and a tortoise– who were
neighbours. In the evening both used to come out of their living places and
talked to each other.
The hare ran fast but the tortoise walked slowly. And the hare was very proud of
it. “You walk very slow”, the hare used to comment on the tortoise. “Yes, I walk
very slow,” replied the tortoise, “but I can defeat you in the race”. “No you can't. It
is impossible”, said the hare.
Both the hare and tortoise argued on this topic. Lastly, they thought to go to
the lion.
19 New Spark English Reader Class 2
The lion heard them patiently. Then after thinking for some time, he said,
“You should decide yourselves. You run a race. The race will decide, who
runs fast”.
Next day, early in the morning, the hare and tortoise gathered near a tree.
The hare said, “Friend, we shall start from this tree. We have to reach the
lion's cave. The one who will reach there first, would be the winner”, The
tortoise agreed.
The race started. The hare was fast, so he moved far ahead. The tortoise
walked slowly. He was far behind the hare.
The hare ran fast and reached near the lion's cave. Then he stopped and
looked behind. He did not see the tortoise.
“There is no trace of the tortoise. I have
reached near the lion's cave. The tortoise
can not defeat me. So, I must take some
rest here”, thought the hare. Then he sat
under a tree. As he was tired, he slept. The
tortoise was slow and steady. He walked on
and on. He reached near the hare, saw him
in deep sleep, but did not wake him up. He
himself did not stop to take rest. He continued
his walk and reached at the lion's cave. Suddenly the hare got up. He saw the
tortoise at the lion's cave. It was too late. He ran very fast, but in vain.
20 New Spark English Reader Class 2
The tortoise had already reached the goal before the hare could reach there.
The lion was there. He patted the tortoise with love and declared, “The tortoise
has won the race”. The hare accepted this.

Tapan and Sachin looked at the mud castle. “Look at it. It is one of the finest
castles”, said Tapan with joy. “Yes it is! And we have made this”, replied
Sachin.
Tapan and Sachin lived in a small village named Palampur. They were good
friends. Their fathers were farmers. They depended on their farm in the
village. But their condition was not good.
Tapan and Sachin were still looking at their mud castle which was built on an
elevated land. It had a fence of little mud wall around it. It had also steps of
mud from ground to the door of the castle.
After a few months, an old man came to the village. He was a famous
sculptor. He stayed at the house of Sachin. In the night, Sachin talked to him
about this art. He also told him about the mud castle which he had built.

become old. I and your mother would be alone. If you leave us who will look
after us?,” said Sachin's father. Sachin became sad. He did not want to
displease his parents. He said to the old man. “Sorry sir, I cannot come
with you. But Itell you about my friend Tapan. He is also interested in the art
of sculpture.
He will definitely go with you.”Tapan's parents agreed. The old man was
also happy to have Tapan as his pupil. .

and set off with the old man. Sachin stayed in the village to look after his
parents. Years passed. Sachin became a young man. His parents died.

The Clever Brother
For the Teacher
This is an interesting story which tells how people of different trades help one
another to complete a difficult task. The teacher will cite another example of
this.
For the Children
1. Would you like to help your friend to complete a task?
(i) Yes (ii) No
2. Write here, what trade will you learn when you are young?
________________________________________________
Now read the story.
There was a poor man who
lived in a small town. He had
four sons. One day he called
his sons and said. “My children,
I love you all. But I have nothing
to give to you, neither money
nor land”. “Go out into the world
and learn a trade which may help you to earn money”, he further said.
The brothers agreed to return home after two years. Each of them set off in a
different direction.
The first brother met a clever thief. The thief taught him his trade.
The second brother met a fortune teller. He taught the boy to look at the stars
and tell the future. He gave the boy a glass and said, “In this you can see

The third brother met a hunter in the forest who trained him in hunting. He gave
him a bow and some arrows and said, “If you use this, you will always hit your
target.”
The fourth brother met a tailor. The tailor taught him how to make the finest
clothes. He gave him a needle and said, “If you use this needle, you will have
very fine stitches.”
After the completion of two years the four
brothers came home and told their father
about their skills. The father decided to
test them. He brought the four brothers
in the courtyard, pointed towards a tree and
asked. “How many eggs are there in the
nest on the branch of the tree?” The second
son replied, “four”. Then the father asked,
“can anyone remove the eggs from the nest
in the presence of the birds?”
The first son climbed up the tree and took out the eggs from the nest.
The father then put the four eggs on a table, one at each corner and said,
“can anyone hit all the eggs with one shot?”The third son hit all the eggs with
one shot.
Now, said the father, “I want all the eggs be put in the nest as they were”.
The fourth son sewed the eggs up carefully and the first brother took them up
in the nest on the branch of the tree.
“Well done!”, said the father, “I am
proud of you”.Next day, there came
a news that a dragon took away the
king's daughter. The king promised,
“I will give him one thousand gold
coins to the man who brings back my
daughter”.The four brothers decided to save the princess from the dragon.
The fortune teller looked into the glass and said, “I can see the princess in a
cave on an island. The dragon is watching her”.
The brothers sailed across the sea and reached the island. Then they entered
the cave. They saw the princess sitting and weeping. The dragon was
sleeping close by.
The brothers took the princess and came out of the cave. They climbed on
the boat and sailed towards the town.
But the dragon woke up and followed them. Very soon he was flying above
the boat.

The hunter took out his bow and shot the
dragon in his stomach. He died and fell on the
ship. The boat broke into two parts
and started drowning. Then the tailor sewed
up the broken parts very carefully.

brothers one thousand gold coins. The four
