Guide to Studying Full-time 2017/18
Welcome to Chesterfield College.
Whatever your dreams, interests, age or ability, we make it our business to help you
get to where you want to be. From entry level to Higher Education, and from technical
and professional courses to academic courses such as A Levels, there is something
for everyone.
Studying at college will probably feel different to being at school. You’ll be more
independent, but you’ll still be supported to achieve great things. You’ll study in
a traditional classroom and get hands-on practical experience in state-of-the-art
facilities, as well as tuition from our tutors and local employers who will all strive to help
you develop the skills you need for a successful future.
College life offers other opportunities too.
With sports teams, clubs and societies to
join there is so much to take advantage of
during your time here.
Our students achieve great results and we
have the support and options in place to
help you get to where you want to be in
the future.
Stuart Cutforth, I hope this guide helps to highlight all that
Principal and Chief Chesterfield College can offer and I look
Executive forward to meeting you on campus in
STUSeptember.

17New GCSE Grades
From 2017, GCSE grades will start to change from A* to G to a numerical grading
system from 9 to 1. This doesn’t mean that the examinations will change, but the
grade you receive will. Comparisons between the two systems aren’t exact, but
broadly the same amount of students who achieve grade C and above will receive
grade 4 and above. A grade 5 will be regarded as a ‘good pass’.
English language, English literature and maths will change in 2017, with other subjects
changing in 2018 and 2019. We have kept entry requirements in this course guide
in the A* to G format (apart from A Levels, which includes both), but the chart below
indicates what the equivalent will be in the new system.

FORM
31Sixth Form
In our Sixth Form centre you can choose to study
A Levels from a wide range of subjects. Our courses
will enable you to gain recognised qualifications and
the transferable skills you’ll develop during your studies
will help you to progress on to employment or secure a
place at the university of your choice.
Changes to A Levels are being introduced nationally
over the next three years which means that in
order to gain the full A Level qualification you will
need to study for two years; your AS grades will
NOT contribute to your overall marks in the revised
A Level qualification.
Your full A Level exams will then be taken at the end
of your two years of study. In year one of the course
students sit the stand alone AS qualification.
At the Chesterfield College Sixth Form centre, you
will be required to choose at least three A Level
subjects to study.
Regular Trips
We offer regular trips and visits for
you to get involved in. In recent
years our students have been to
London, Auschwitz, University of
Oxford, Durham and the USA.

Solicitor at Kennedys Law
When I got to university, having
studied A Levels at college, I
felt much more prepared than
my peers. I was already used
to organising my workload,
having in-depth discussions and
working independently.
Studying law gives you a huge
amount of transferable skills.
You don’t just have to become
a lawyer, your skills are valued
in a wide range of careers such
as journalism, management or
teaching.
Law at A Level was so useful. It
gave me a solid understanding of
the basic principles which I then
built on at Durham University.
Had I not done the Law A Level
I would have been at a real
disadvantage.
When I was considering university
the college was really helpful,
we went on visits to a range
of different universities such
as Cambridge and Oxford and
received great advice on filling out
applications and other paperwork.

CASE STUDY
James Nightingale − Level 3 Foundation
Diploma in Art and Design
Fashion Designer
I first came to college to study the
Diploma in Fashion and Clothing, I
then progressed onto the Level 3
Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
and I’m so glad I did. Following
my time at college I progressed
to the London College of Fashion
specialising my studies in menswear.
I’ve now launched my own menswear
label, J A Nightingale, from my base
in West Studios, the creative business
hub based at the Chesterfield College
campus.
The Foundation Diploma is great as
it gives you an understanding and
appreciation of a very broad spectrum
of creative practices using a huge
variety of medias, from photography
to screen printing. This gave me
a wider range of skills that I can
use throughout my career, such as
utilising my photography skills at
photo shoots. My tutors really helped
me to create a great portfolio and
university application which led to
me getting a place at the London
College of Fashion. The support
was always there along with great
encouragement.
