HEALTH AND SOCIAL
CARE CASE STUDY

Hannah Birks − Level 3 Extended
Diploma NHS Cadetship Graduate

The college’s link with Chesterfield
Royal Hospital gave me access
to a fantastic 12-week NHS
Cadetship programme along
with 12 other fellow students. I’d
been trying to gain experience at
Chesterfield Royal for years without
any luck but college really helped
me to get my foot in the door.

I spent part of my cadetship in the
maternity ward working alongside
experienced midwives who helped
me to see exactly what the role
involved.

There was a moment in my first
hour on the maternity ward when I
was calming down a lady and her
husband as she prepared to go for
a C-section. Just giving them the
support and confidence to know
that everything was going to be ok
made me think “yes this is exactly
what I want to do”.

Without this experience I wouldn’t
have gained a place at Sheffield
Hallam University next year to
study midwifery. Having experience
was vital in my application. Yes
they’re interested in your grades
but they want to see what relevant
experience you have.

During my university interview I was
asked what maternity experience I
have and I was able to refer to lots
of experience and practice I gained
whilst on the cadetship, other
applicants were leaving in floods of
tears as they had the grades but
not the experience.

I’ve always had an interest in
engineering from a young age
at school. I tried mechanical
engineering and electrical
engineering but I found fabrication
the most interesting so decided to
study it further.

I actually started my studies at
another college and transferred here
when they decided to change the
course aims and I’m really glad I
did. All of my tutors have been so
helpful with both the theory and the
practical side of things, whenever I
have a question they take the time to
explain things until I fully understand.

RAY:

I first met Paige at an open day
when we showed her around the
area and introduced her to some
of the staff. As she started her
programme later than the rest of her
class and is the only female student,
we made sure that we provided all of
the support she needed to integrate
into college life as easily as possible
and I’m blown away by everything
she’s achieved.

To say you travel here from Kiveton
on the other side of Sheffield and
started on programme late, you’ve
completed extra assignments, done
extra work at home and you’re now
earning top marks, like 98% in very
tough science and calculations
exams, one of the highest scores in
the UK. It’s very impressive.

Matt Parker - BTEC Level 3 National student-stories
Diploma Performing Arts

The two years I spent at college were
worth every minute! It taught me an
awful lot about the performing arts
industry, what is involved in getting
work as an actor/performer and a
lot about the different styles and
practitioners. This was extremely
helpful for me as it broadened my
knowledge on all things performing
arts, and certainly helped me get
where I am now. We also sometimes
had guest speakers come in and
share their personal experiences in
the industry.

The course itself is brilliant, but
what’s really invaluable are the
opportunities you are given
throughout. An example of this is the
2013 Chesterfield College Cinema
Advert I starred in which was offered
as an open audition to our year,
and I got the role! The tutors are
lovely, and will definitely push you in
the right direction to achieve your
potential. Finally, the London trips are
an amazing experience, full of fun,
theatre and memories to cherish.

My college course supplied me
with exactly what I needed to get
into the course I wanted at the East
15 Acting School based at Essex
University. We had loads of audition
prep lessons which really assisted
me when picking which speeches
to audition with and how I should
perform them. They also helped me
achieve top grades overall at the
end of my second year, which were
an added bonus to help me when
applying for the course.
