Like all the larger Wickham inspection cars

the No. 40 Mk. II is double ended; designed
for two-way operation without turning.
Driving controls and instruments, opening
windscreen, head and tail lights are all
duplicated. The nine comfortable seats are
reversible and full four-gear performance

of the diesel or petrol engine is available
in either direction of travel.

Illustrations show the ample, unobstructed leg room and wide entrance doors
at each end of the car, the controls, instrument panel and deep document

shelf and the easy access to the engine through a flush panel in the floor.

Twenty of these tough, reliable cars have recently
been delivered to South African Railways

Another project for a super speed railway lino is well
under way. The New Sanyo Line of Japanese National

Railways between Osaka and Okayama w ill extend the world
famous 200km h New Tokaido Line further to the w est - at
a faster speed of 250km h! The test motor coach built by

NIPPON SHARYO is now challenging for this super speed

with faborable results. Eight 250kW traction motors for a

unit of two test coaches, thyristor controlled rectifier, new-
automatic speed control, new braking systems, and full air
ventilation system are other major features in addition to
numerous improvements.

The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich will see the Federal
German Railway operating new multiple unit train sets

developed by M.A.N, for Munich's rapid transit system.
Urban services have to offer high passenger
capacity and high acceleration to minimize waiting times
between trains; adequate top speeds are also important
in Munich to prevent interference with rail traffic on
sections of the main lines forming part of the rapid transit
network.
Our solution: The basic unit is a three-car railcar set.
Three of these can be coupled together to form a 9-car
train unit to handle rush-hour traffic. With a drive rating of
approximately 10000 HP, these train sets are capable of
attaining 60km/h within 17 seconds. Top speed is 120km/h

and the target is a train headway of 90 seconds. Maximum
passenger capacity will be 69000 passengers per hour

on one track. Incidentally, these trains are equipped with
M.A.N, air suspension bogies.
