In 1867 George M. Pullman formed Pullman's Palace Car Company to build and
operate sleeping cars, the name being changed to the Pullman Company in 1899.
In 1921 the Haskell & Barker Car Company, founded in 1852, was acquired and
three years later the various car-building activities were consolidated in a new
company— Pullman Car & Manufacturing Corporation. In 1927 Pullman Incorpor-
ated was formed as the parent company with two main subsidiaries, The Pullman
Company operating sleeping cars, and Pullman Car and Manufacturing Corp.
building cars. In 1934 the latter was merged with Standard Steel Car Company
(acquired in 1930) to form Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company. Then
in 1959 this company merged into Pullman Incorporated as Pullman-Standard
Division. Pursuant to a Federal Court order requiring separation of sleeping
car operation and the manufacture of railroad cars, in 1947 Pullman Incorporated
sold the Pullman Company to a group of railroads.

As the Rax Werke was a surplus production company in the field of rolling stock,
when taking into consideration the demand existing in Austria, this branch company
was closed. In the interest of achieving higher productivity, the manufacture of
locomotives was transferred to the works at Simmering and Graz which have always
been concerned with the production of rolling stock of all kinds.

Sikorsky is providing TurboT rains for service in Canada and the United States.
Two 3-car trains are being supplied on a lease-maintenance basis to the U.S. Depart-
ment of Transportation for demonstration service between Boston and New York,
on the Penn Central Railroad. Five 7-car trains are being provided under a lease-
maintenance agreement for operation between Toronto and Montreal by Canadian
National Railways.
Each train set has two power dome cars which carry passengers and contain gas
turbine engines and direct gear drive system. One power dome car is at each
end of the train. The Department of Transportation trains have one intermediate
car between the power dome cars and the Canadian National trains have five
intermediate cars between two power dome cars. Each intermediate and each
power dome car carries about 50 passengers. The power dome cars each have
one double axle truck. Single trucks with guided axles are located between each
car. The cars are of light weight construction, primarily of aluminium and stream-
lined with flush windows and smooth outer diaphragms.
Power is supplied by United Aircraft of Canada Limited ST6 gas turbine engines
each developing about 400 horsepower in continuous operation and capable of 550
horsepower intermittently. The Department of Transportation trains are supplied
with seven ST6 engines, one of which drives an electrical generator for auxiliary
power. The Canadian National trains are equipped with five ST6 gas turbines,
—four for motive power and one for electrical power generation. These engines
incorporate "free" power turbine staging in effect, an aerodynamic torque
converter—enabling the output shafts from each bank of engines to drive the axles
or gear change. An electric
DOTvia reduction boxes and cardan shafts without clutch trains for use in New York
third rail propulsion system is provided for the
City tunnels.
A completely new form of suspension has been developed which, by combining
low centre of gravity (40 ins. above rail) with pendulous action of the cars, permits
much higher speeds through curves without increasing superelevation, (see
illustration.)
Superelevation is a compromise between freight train and passenger train
requirements, and the speed of fast trains has to be limited on curves where super-
elevation is insufficient to counteract centrifugal force. However, because of the
built-in "banking" effect of this suspension, the speed of the TurboTrain through
curves is not limited in this way as the cars, with their passengers, automatically
adopt the correct angle for safe and comfortable riding at speeds up to 40 per cent
DOTgreater than conventional trains on a given curve. The
trains are geared for
test speeds of 170 m.p.h., while the Canadian National trains are geared for top TurboTrain Suspension on single-axle installation

investors headed by Tom C. Campbell, and operations were expanded to include
new freight cars. They now design and build a wide variety of both standard
and specialised freight cars and continue to repair and rebuild rolling stock. They

Union Tank Car Company was established in 1891. From its early days it has
contributed many engineering and mechanical innovations to the development of
the tank car, including the first all-steel car and the Hot Dog design which eliminates
both the underframe and dome. It has led the trend towards larger tank cars,
having introduced the first cars with capacities of 20,000. 30,000 and 50,000 gallons.
Most recently. Union Tank has developed a large-diameter, straight-shell 33,500-
gallon pressure car for anhydrous ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas. Its
—Sandwich cars for superphosphoric acid, caustic soda, polyglycols, phenols— and
for food service represent a major improvement in the technique of exact tem-
perature control through insulation with urethane foam. For handling granular
solids such as cement, lime, clay, flour, starch and plastic pellets, Union Tank's
improved Pressure Flow car provides for fast pneumatic unloading. The Company
owns and operates a fleet of 51,000 tank cars which are leased to the petroleum,
chemical, food and fertilizer industries.

WICKHAM— Cont. D. Wickham, incorporated as a private limited company in 1912. was acquired
by the present management in 1924 to build rail motor cars for track inspection and
equipment for track maintenance. Cars were very soon being sent all over the
world as far afield as China and Peru. In design, the company were pioneers
with roller bearing axle boxes, welded steel frames, underslung springs and all-
steel bodies. In the decade before the outbreak of the last war, D. Wickham
were designing and developing passenger raitcars for some of the most difficult
railway conditions in the world. Using solid drawn square steel tubing and electric
welding throughout, an integral body was developed which eliminated the conven-
tional underframe and produced a body which was as much as 30 per cent lighter
than conventional design and at least as strong. The high power, weight ratio
achieved in the Wickham cars has enabled economical passenger carrying to be
achieved under most arduous mountain conditions.
Recent deliveries and work in hand include: multiple unit diesel railcars and
trailers, and diesel railbuses for British Railways; diesel railcars for Sabah, Brazil,
and Rhodesia; inspection cars for Cameroun, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, Portuguese
East Africa, Mauritania, Rhodesia, Swaziland, Congo Republic and Union Miniere
du Haut-Katanga; gang trolleys for British Railways, Congo Republic. Rhodesia,
South Africa. Kenya, Greece, Jamaica, Swaziland, Sudan, Zambia; and other special
purpose vehicles for overseas railways.
Sabah Railways, Wickham railcar and trailer set Drive bogie fitted tc Wickham railcar for Sabah Railways
Seating 176 passengers in I sc, 2nd and 3rd class saloons. The power car also has
a baggage compartment and a small driving cab for reverse running. Powered by
135 h.p. diesel engine driving through fluid coupling. Four speed epicyclic gearbox
and Carden shafts. Body and chassis are of integral construction; a feature of
Wickham lightweight design.
A second repeat order for these cars; three two-car sets will be delivered to
Sabah Railways at the end of 1971.

Although it does not run on rails, the Trojan 254R tractor operates as a yard
switching (shunting) locomotive, with the additional facility that, on completion
of one duty, it can quickly and easily travel across intervening tracks to its next
duty without having to be switched around the lines. Its low-pressure rubber
tyred wheels straddle the rail track and enable it to operate on cross ties and to cror.s
rails, drainage trenches, and uneven surfaces generally.
The tractor is equipped with standard couplers at front and rear; coupling and
uncoupling is effected by the driver operating a lever in the cab. It also has its
own 35 cu. ft.'min. compressed air system with connecting hoses for operation,
when necessary, of the air brakes on the cars being moved.
The Trojan 254R weighs 31,500 lb. {14,300 kg.) and can push or pull up to 1.500
tons of rolling stock.
