Sylvania was founded in 1901 as a small concern in Massachusetts producing light bulbs.
It entered into the radio tube field in the 1 920 s and in 1931 became Sylvania Electric
Products Inc. In March 1959 Sylvania merged into the General Telephone & Electronics
Corporation with Sylvania functioning as a wholly owned subsidiary. The Sylvania
Automatic Vehicle Identification System was designed, developed and produced by
Sylvania in 1963 after more than three years of field tests proved it ready to give railroads
new speed and efficiency in car identification and utilization.
In 1967 the Association of American Railroads accepted Sylvania's Kartrack system
as AAR's standard automatic car identification for the U.S.A. and Canada.
Sylvania Kar-Track Unmanned Trackside Scanner
Sends out beams of white light and receives coloured reflected light from strips of
special material attached to each car. The strips form a colour code representing
the number of each car and its weight when empty. The information read by the
scanner (illustrated) is transmitted to a central point. The coloured strips may be
seen on the wagon sides above the second axle boxes.

Sperry service has been used by nearly all the North American Railroads and in
Europe and Australia. The rail detector car used in Australia is an air-conditioned
diesel powered transit bus equipped with retractable rail wheels for on-rail use.

SULZER
Compagnie de Construction Mecanique Procedes Sulzer
51, Boulevard Brune, Paris I4e. France
Since I960 the manufacture of Sulzer diesel engines in France has been concen-
trated at the new plant at Mantes (Yvelines). Production includes the LVA24
range of Vee-type engines, for S.N.C.F. and other railways, with an output of
250 h.p. per cylinder at 1,050 to 1,100 r.p.m.
At the moment, the 80 type I2LVA24 Sulzer engines in service in S.N.C.F. Series
68000 locomotives have achieved an aggregate total of 31 million miles (50 million
km.); 10 engines are running in Cuba in Clayton locomotives.
In the UK 5 type I2LVA 24 engines have been fitted on Brush locomotives for
British Railways and one I6LVA24 engine developing 4,000 h.p. is Fitted on the
"Kestrel" prototype locomotive built by Brush and in service on British Railways.
This is the most powerful single-engined diesel locomotive in the world.
During 1967 one of the 16-cylinder type 16LVA24 engines built at Mantes was
subjected to the following tests at Sulzer Bros. Winterthur, Switzerland, under
the official control of the S.N.C.F.:
UIC 100-hour test at an output of 4,000 h.p. at 1,100 r.p.m., with the usual
overload at 4,400 h.p.
ORE 840-hour endurance test at 4,000 h.p. with periods at 4,200 h.p.
It is the first time in the history of diesel traction that these trials have been
successfully completed at such a high output.

The Electro-Motive Division of General Motors first developed the Model 567 Model 645E Series
diesel engine in 1938 when it began locomotive manufacture at La Grange, Illinois
U.S.A.
To provide increased horsepower and greater efficiency, the Model 645 engine
was introduced in mid-1965. The major change in the Model 645 over the 567
is the increase in cylinder liner bore from 8^ inches to 9-^ inches. Maximum
interchangeability with the 567 engine has been maintained.
The Model 645 engine, either normally aspirated or turbocharged, is standard
for U.S. domestic type locomotives and is also available for export.
