Preface
Dolphin English Reader is an interactive multi-skill English course book designed
for the basic level students (grade 1-8) who are learning English as a foreign
or second language. It’s an integrated learner-friendly course that compiles
all the four skills of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing in a
selective and graded manner. The course aims at preparing the learners for
communicative challenges in real life and thus developing them into efficient
communicators in the changed arena of global communication.
The fundamental principle of modern day learning is “Learning must be fun.”
For the very purpose the classroom environment and the selected activities
of the textbook must be inclusive, participatory and entertaining to all the
learners. Dolphin English Reader carefully considers this principle and has ten
sections in each unit (except 8 with purpose in grade one and 9 in two and
three) to ensure that the selected activities address the varied intelligence,
interest, motivation and reinforcement of the learners. Latest concepts in
English Language Teaching (ELT) like: critical analysis, task-based approach
and interactive classroom are fairly adapted by the course.
The lessons selected for the course are of diverse types. Some of them are
borrowed in their original form and some are simplified versions of texts written
by famous writers as per the grade and maturity level of the learners. Some
lessons are purely original as they have been created by the author. The texts
include all genres of language and literature: stories, poems, essays, one act
plays, reports, speeches, diary entries, biographies, travelogues, letters and
notices, covering themes across the curriculum. The lessons and activities are
taken from almost all areas of knowledge like literature, geography, history,
nature, science and technology, mathematics, anthropology, economics,
entertainment and more.
Dolphin English Reader is loosely based on the curriculum prepared by
Curriculum Development Centre, Nepal. The author’s researches on Child
Psychology and ELT during the fifteen-year-long experience as a teacher have
a crucial influence on the selection of lessons and activities. Author’s frequent
interactions with educationists, parents and teachers have also contributed a
lot in the framing and sketching of this course book.
I acknowledge my sincere gratitude to the entire family of Guinness Publications,
Kathmandu, Nepal. My school teachers, professors, colleagues in the
profession and students who are the greatest sources of my learning deserve
my decent respect. I am thankful to Mr. Ishowor Poudel for his review. I’m
indebted to Mr. Ram Bahadur Mochi for the most productive tips I’ve received.
The authors and writers whose creations have been used in the course are
above the line of respect.
I would humbly accept the suggestions of experts and the other concerned for
the betterment of this course book. I believe that this book will be inclusive and
entertaining enough for teaching and learning English in the classroom.

The Upside-down Cake
My name is Mark. I went to a small village school when I was
a boy of your age. There were only fifty students in the whole
school. Classes were small. We had the infant’s class, the middle-
class and the top class.
My teacher was called Miss Tweedy. She was very kind. She
noticed that every child was different. Some were shy and quiet
and some were loud and confident and there were others in
Dolphin English Reader book 5 11
between. Miss Tweedy used to joke about herself and make us
laugh when she made a mistake. Sometimes I thought she made
mistakes on purpose just to make us feel better about ourselves
when we messed something up.
One day she came to school with an upside-down cake to share
with the class who were the winners of the month. Every month
one class was the winner. I did notice that we seemed to take
it in turns to be the winner. It was called the “Good Behaviour
Prize”, and every month a different class won it and shared
out the cake with them. Sometimes it was chocolate cake and
sometimes lemon cake. I used to like the cherry cake so if our
class won I would ask if we could have the cherry cake for our
prize.
12 Dolphin English Reader book 5
“Now, let’s see Mark, we could have a cherry cake, but only if
everyone agrees,” Miss Tweedy used to say, “We could have
some suggestions first and then count how many hands go up
for each one.”
We always voted like that and sometimes I was lucky. I didn’t
mind because I like chocolate cake and lemon cake too.
I was telling you about the Upside-down cake, wasn’t I? Well
my class won the best behavior prize, but we forgot to vote for
what kind of cake to have. Miss Tweedy just got on and made
one anyway.
She asked the class if they had ever heard of upside-down cake.
One of the girls put her hand up and said her grandma made it
sometimes.
“Ah,” said Miss Tweedy, “then I must tell you about my silly
mistake. I thought I might get away without letting you know
about it, but as Sarah knows what upside-down cake should be
like, I can’t pretend, Can I?”
Miss Tweedy took the lid of the tin and showed us the cake.
I jumped up and down and clapped my hands. Cherries were
gathered at the top of the cake, so many that there was hardly
any yellow cake to be seen! Everyone giggled and shouted. They
all liked the cherry cake too.
Dolphin English Reader book 5 13
“Can you guess what happened?” asked Miss Tweedy looking
embarrassed, hanging her head and sucking her finger; I
thought she was play-acting but Sarah went up to Miss Tweedy
and patted her arm.
“It’s alright miss Tweedy,” she said, “Don’t worry, we all make
mistakes. I’m sure we will want to eat it even if all the cherries
sank to the bottom and you turned it upside down.” “Yes, that’s
right miss,” we all chimed in, “Don’t worry miss, we will eat it!”
Delighted, we all sat around and had a piece of upside-down
cherry cake. I turned mine the right way to make it tasted as
good as it usually did.
Later on that day Timmy, one of the youngest boys in the class
was writing some of his letters upside down. He was a shy, quiet
boy and when Miss Tweedy showed him how to change them
14 Dolphin English Reader book 5
round, he hung his head and sucked his finger and tears started
to fall on his work.
“Never mind Timmy, your letter is a bit like my upside-down
cake, isn’t it? It’s the right shape. It’s just upside down. All we
have to do is turn it over. Look, we all make mistakes sometimes.
It’s how we learn. We do it wrong until we learn to do it right!”
Timmy smiled and so did we, thinking about the taste of the
delicious cherry cake and the kindness of Miss Tweedy.

Malala yoUsafzai
Malala Yousafzai was born
on 12 July 1997 in the Swat
Valley in northwest Pakistan
as the first child of Ziauddin
Yousafzai and Tor Pekai
Yousafzai. Her father Ziauddin
was a poet, school owner and
an education activitist. She
had a pleasant childhood with
her parents and two small
brothers at home. Because of her father’s passion to education,
she was happily sent to school where at the time it was quite
difficult for a Muslim girl to attend school.
Dolphin English Reader book 5 29
While Malala was in her primary education, that region of
Pakistan was in the influence of Taliban, a Muslim extremist
group fighting to enforce the strict Muslim law. The Taliban
didn’t permit the girls to attend schools. Most people in her
region didn’t send their daughters to school and didn’t like
others sending either.
Malala started developing a deep concern on girl education
in her region. She started encouraging people to send their
daughters to school. Her father was always there with her.
In September 2008, Malala spoke in Peshawar about female
education. She clearly stated that education was a basic right of
girls and No one should prevent girls from attending schools.
Her speech was covered by televisions and newspapers and it
brought a new wave in the entire region.
By 2009, Malala was widely
recognized as a child education
activist. She was regularly
featured in radio, television and
newspapers. A documentary was
made about her. She received
the National Peace Award for
Youth in 2011. A secondary school was renamed in her honour.
30 Dolphin English Reader book 5
By then she was recognized as a popular activist and a strong
opponent of Taliban.
As Malala became more recognized, dangers began hovering
around her. It was the afternoon of 9 October 2012, Malala was
in her school bus back to home. A
gunman attacked her with a pistol.
He fired three shots on her. But
luckily she was saved. She was
taken to England for her treatment.
After the attack, support grew for
her. She became more popular
and her movement became much
stronger. She was honoured with
a number of prizes and titles. In 2014 she was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize, the most reputed prize ever and became the
youngest ever laureate, aged only 17, of the prize.
Since then she has been living in England and continuing her
study. She is an excellent student. She has planned to join politics
after her study. Let’s pray that the dream of this girl come true.

The Mirror
In ancient times there lived in a remote part of Japan a man and
his wife. They were blessed with a little girl who was the pet

and idol of her parents. On one occasion the man was called
away on business in distant Kyoto. Before he went he told his
daughter that if she were good and dutiful to her mother he
would bring her back a present she would prize very highly.
Then the man took his departure. The mother and the daughter
watched him go.
After a few days
the man returned,
and after his
wife and child
had taken off his
large hat and
sandals he sat
down upon the
white mats and
opened a bamboo
basket, watching
the eager gaze
of his little child.
He took out a
wonderful doll and lacquer box of cakes and put them into her
outstretched hands. Once more he dived into his basket and
presented his wife with a metal mirror.
36 Dolphin English Reader book 5
The man’s wife had never seen a mirror before. On gazing onto it,
she thought another woman looked out upon her. Her husband
explained the mystery and asked her to take great care of the
mirror.
Soon after this happy homecoming and distribution of presents
the woman became very ill. Just before she died she called her
little daughter and said, “Dear child, when I’m dead take every
care of your father. You will miss me when I have left you. But
this mirror will give you my glimpse. So when you feel lonely
look into this mirror and there you’ll find me.” These were the
last words of the mother.
In due time the man
married again, and his
wife was not at all kind to
her stepdaughter. But the
little one, remembering
her mother’s words,
would retire to a corner
and eagerly look into
the mirror. But she was
surprised at the face she
saw in the mirror. It was
not like the face drawn in
Dolphin English Reader book 5 37
pain as she had seen in her mother’s deathbed, but young and
beautiful.
One day the girl’s stepmother chanced to see her crouching in
a corner over an object she could not quite see. This ignorant
woman used to detest this girl and believed that she detested
her in return. She fancied that the little one was performing
some witchcraft to kill her. She then went to her husband and
told him that his wicked child was doing her best to kill her by
witchcraft.
When the man heard this he went to his daughter’s room. He
took her by surprise and she immediately slipped the mirror
into her sleeve. For the first time her doting father grew angry.
He feared that there was some truth in what his wife had said,
and repeated her tale forthwith.
When the daughter heard this she was amazed at her father’s
words. She told him that she loved him far too well ever to
attempt or wish to kill his wife, who she knew was dear to him.
“What have you hidden in your sleeve?” said the father, only
half convinced and still much puzzled.
“The mirror you gave my mother, and which she, on her
deathbed gave to me. Every time I look into its shining surface
I see the face of my dear mother, young and beautiful. When
38 Dolphin English Reader book 5
my heart aches—and oh! It has ached-I take out the mirror and
watch her. My mother’s face, with sweet and kind smile brings
me peace and helps me to bear hard words and cross looks.”
Then the man understood and loved the child more. He didn’t
explain her that the image on the mirror wasn’t her mother’s.
The stepmother was ashamed of what she had thought. She
apologized, the girl forgave and they lived happily thereafter.

To the temple of the king

Searching, seeking
With just one touch of his trembling hand

Daylight waits while the old man sings
Heaven help me
And then like the rush of a thousand wings
It shines upon the one
And the day had just begun

Heard the tolling of the great black bell
