I feel nothing but gratitude to Tom for saving my life, and my
family helping me stay or have the strength to live. I have never
come up with how I knew it would happen or how I managed to
walk away with my life, but I can tell you it was near death for
me. Nightmares followed for months afterward, and sometimes
they still surface near the anniversary of the experience. My
psychic powers have doubled since then. However, it is an
experience I do not wish to repeat. The lesson I did learn is not
to take life for granted because life is short. Having that near-
death experience made me aware of my life and how short it
can be.

The fisherMan
The fisherman goes out at dawn
When everyone’s abed,
And from the bottom of the sea
Draws up his daily bread.
His life is strange; half on the shore
And half upon the sea -
Not quite a fish, and yet not quite
The same as you and me.
The fisherman has curious eyes;
They make you feel so queer,
As if they had seen many things
Of wonder and of fear.
They are like the sea on foggy days, --
Not gray, nor yet quite blue;
They’re like the wondrous tales he tells
Not quite – yet may be – true.

pandora’s box
In ancient Greece there was
the rule of Gods. Zeus was the
king. He was brave, furious
and arrogant. Man didn’t have
fire till then and King Zeus
believed man did not deserve
it. Prometheus, the kind God
knew how desperately man
needed fire. So without the
king’s consent he stole the fire
and gave it to man.
Zeus was furious that his
decision had been ignored. As
punishment, Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock for many years.
118 Dolphin English Reader book 5
He was not satisfied with it. He wanted to punish Epimetheus,
the friend of Prometheus and all men who were then enjoying
the fire.
Zeus, first called Hepaestus, the maker of things and ordered
him to make him a daughter. Hepaestus made a beautiful
woman out of clay, brought her to life and gave it to Zeus and
this beautiful woman was named Pandora by the king. Pandora
was then taught crafts by Athena and Hermes was ordered by
Zeus to teach her to be deceitful and curious.
Epimetheus, the other
target of the King had
been lonely after his
friend was chained to
Rock. The wicked idea
of Zeus that he wanted
to get his daughter
Pandora married to
him lured Epimetheus.
Epimetheus though not
sure of the king’s grace,
accepted the proposal
because he fell in love
with the gorgeous Pandora at first sight.
Dolphin English Reader book 5 119
A grand ceremony was organized for the wedding of Pandora
and Epimetheus. Almost all Gods attended it. They all brought
the couple a gift and blessings. Zeus gave the newweds a gift.
Some say it was a jar and some say it was a box. Whatever it
was, it was beautifully crafted and was locked. It came with a
note that said, “DO NOT OPEN.” Attached to the note was a key.
It was all very curious.
Can you guess what
happened next?
Pandora’s curiosity got
to new height. One day
she used the key to open
the box. As she raised
the lid, out flew all the
bad things in the world
today-envy, sickness,
hate, disease and many
more which were closed
in the box till then.
Pandora slammed the lid
closed but it was too late.
Epimetheus heard her weeping. He came running. Pandora
opened the lid to show him that it was empty. Quickly, before
120 Dolphin English Reader book 5
she could slam the lid shut, one tiny bug flew out. He gave
Pandora a big buggy smile in thanks for his freedom and flew
away. That tiny bug was named Hope. On that day all the bad
things got free to make people suffer as per the King’s wish. But
there came Hope too that has made all the difference.

Dear Parents,
We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever
field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will
increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a
tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and fewer students are
studying it than a decade ago.
That’s why our entire school joined in on the largest education event in
history: The Hour of Code. During Computer Science Education Week
(Dec. 8-14), every one of our students will be amongst over 2 million
worldwide spending one hour learning the basics.
Our Hour of Code is a statement that Heritage School is ready to
teach these foundational 21st century skills. To continue bringing
programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of
Code event huge. I encourage you to reach out to local media, share the

one arT
The art of loosing isn’t hard to master;
So many things seem filled with the intent
To be lost that their loss is not disaster.
Loose something everyday. Accept the fluster:
Of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, loosing faster:
Places, and names, and where it was you meant
To travel. None of these will bring disaster.
I lost my mother’s watch. And look! My last or
Next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.
I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
Some realms I owned, two rivers a continent.
I miss them but it was not a disaster.
-Even losing you I shan’t have lied. It’s evident.

beaUTifUl swan
It was a cold
morning and I was
walking through the
forest. I, suddenly
heard the sound of
the flapping of wings.
The sounds, as I
reckoned were the
sounds of distress
and I was sure that
a creature needed
help. On approaching
it, I found a beautiful
swan lying helplessly
with one of the wings
bleeding. The swan
gave an appealing look to me and I was touched. I carried it to
my home and nursed its wound. After a few days the swan was
able to fly and I set it free.
