Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as jus as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves to step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads onto way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I-
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The advenTUres of bird
Once upon a time there was a very
large bird. His name was Bird.
Although he had a bad memory
it was an easy name for him to
remember – children were always
pointing at him saying, “Look at that
bird!” which helped him remember
his name. But one day Bird could
not fly. He tried but he couldn’t.
He loved to soar high in the sky,
Dolphin English Reader book 5 75
loop-the-loop and dive-bomb chickens. He made the chickens
envious as they couldn’t fly, and they ran at full pelt towards
him in an attempt to get off the ground and chase him away.
But to no avail.
The reason that Bird could no longer fly was because he loved
eating – too much. This would not have mattered, but he had
eaten too much many times and had become even larger. He
loved the tasty leftover morsels in the fast food cartoons that
were littered on the sidewalks by untidy people. So Bird grew
and grew and grew and got heavier and heavier. But his wings
stayed the same size. So no matter how fast he flapped, he
could not take off from the ground any more. He could not
just fly. His furious attempts to fly just scattered the empty
food cartoons all over the road. And his bottom only rose an
inch above the ground before bouncing three times back on
the sidewalk. Bird was flying nowhere and decided to walk
down the street and flap at a bus to stop for him with one of
his wings.
A sign on the bus said: “NO BIRDS – DEFINITELY NO LARGE
BIRDS.” Bird could not read signs other than reading the word
‘BIRD’, so thought that it must be a bus especially for birds and
hopped on anyway. Bird did not have any money but the driver
liked birds. He kept homing pigeons as pets and thought that
76 Dolphin English Reader book 5
Bird must need homing too and felt sorry for him, and turned
a blind eye.
Bird perched on a comfy seat hoping no one would notice him.
But there were two children: twins Sally and James, sitting
right behind Bird who were on their way home from school.
They noticed him and together said, “Look at that bird.”
Bird didn’t know where he was going. He hoped that the bus
would take him to his place. Sally spoke to Bird, “Where are
you going?” Bird was confused and didn’t know how or what
Dolphin English Reader book 5 77
or where to answer. The bus arrived at Sally and James’s bus
stop and they beckoned to Bird to hop off too. “Let’s take him
home”, they both said together.
Soon they got home and were greeted by their mom. Waving a
pointed finger to Bird mom said, “What on earth is that?”
“That’s Bird that is,” was the reply, “I don’t think he can fly
anymore. Can he live with us?”
“Definitely ...... NOT!” said their mom in her most annoyed
voice.
“Oh, p-l-e-a-s-e! p-l-e-a-s-e p-l-e-a-s-e mom!” was the twin’s
chorus.
Finally mom agreed to keep Bird for one night. That evening
they all settled down in front of the telly to watch a nature
78 Dolphin English Reader book 5
program about exotic birds living in hot countries far way.
Bird’s beak flopped open wide in wonder. He definitely was not
exotic and had never flown to far away countries. Afterwards
they found a nice roost for bird on top of the banister rails,
upstairs on the landing, outside the bedroom. Bird was very
tired and after a few pecks of breakfast cereals and a dip of
water, tucked his head under his wing, drifted off to sleep,
dreaming of flying again.
The next morning Sally and James asked Bird if he would like
to go school with them. Bird didn’t really know what school
was but as it sounded such a nice place, hopped off his perch
and followed them.
Dolphin English Reader book 5 79
They took Bird to the school putting a school blazer over his
wings. They went to the morning assembly and sat with the
rest of their class, who all shouted at the same time: “Look at
that bird.”
And the teachers all noticed too, and then the whole school
shouted: “LOOK AT THAT BIRD.”
The head teacher came over to Sally and James and Bird and
said, “We have a large bird in the school, excellent! Do come
to the front of the school Bird, we are pleased to see you.” And
then he spoke to the whole school, “We are very lucky to have
a special visitor. And here he is, a very large bird. And what do
we always say to important visitors?”
The whole school answered as one “Good morning Mr. Bird.”
“Would anyone like to ask him a question?” the head teacher
said.
The hands shot up and the questions followed up.
Where do you live? Can you fly? Do you have any brothers or
sisters? How old are you? Do you lay eggs? Why aren’t you so
pretty? And many more.
80 Dolphin English Reader book 5
And then something magical happened. Bird could suddenly
understand some English words. Up to then he could only
understand Bird language and the word bird. He had been
taken to school, it was his first day and he was learning already.
Although Bird couldn’t speak he made signing actions with
his wings and tweets and squawks with his beak to answer
the children’s questions as best he could. He enjoyed his first
day at school and thought to himself: “I’m learning such a lot
already. I wonder if the teachers can teach me to fly again!”
“What an adventure!” Bird thought to himself.

Below is a part of speech given by a grade five student of
Bangladesh about building a new multi-purpose store in his
neighbourhood. Read it and do the activities.
I support the idea of building a new large multi-purpose store
near my neighbourhood. It will provide convenience to me
and my neighbours and additional jobs, as well as eliminating
unattractive areas to the neighbourhood.
Having such a store near our neighbourhood will provide
convenience. Currently we have to travel in one direction for
grocery store, another direction for clothing stores, and several
other places for other types of stores. All of these stores are
at least several miles from our neighbourhood. We will have
much less travel time to this one store. Because this store
combines a number of different product classes, we can avoid
Dolphin English Reader book 5 93
going to different stores for everything we want to buy. We
will be able to buy our groceries, clothing, electronic items and
other products all at one time. And we will also have the added
convenience of shopping at any hour of the day when we are
too busy to shop during normal hours.
At the present time, there are students who would like to
work after class, but there are not sufficient jobs available. In
addition, there are retired people in our neighbourhood who
would like to supplement their meager income with some
light work. A multi-purpose store like the one that is proposed
for our neighbourhood will provide a number of different job
opportunities for these two classes of people as well as others
in the community who need full-time jobs. This benefits the
overall economic base of the community.
Now, there are two abandoned homes, one occupied home
with junk cars and another with debris in the yard, and several
overgrown vacant lots on the property where this store will be
built. There is nothing beneficial about any of those properties.
They contribute to rodent and insect growth, contain hiding
places for criminals and are dangerous for young children like
us. Replacing these lots with the store will eliminate these
dangers.
As I discussed, the multi-purpose store has many benefits for
us and we should all support it.
Thank you!

On July 19, 2005, on my brother’s birthday, I was in an accident.
When I woke up that morning, I knew something was not going
to be right. I knew something bad was going to happen, but I
got in to the truck anyway. Something told me not to, but I did
not follow that feeling. I still wish to this day I had.
I went off Highway 20 in Ukiah, California above the Kayen

camp grounds at Lake Mendocino. We were found off the road
150 feet, wedged between two trees. We had been going 55
miles an hour and the impact was hard. The driver had been up
all night previously fishing at the Russian river. Being a parolee
at the time, he was worried about being caught for doing things
wrong. There were five people in his truck: two in the back and
three of us in front. My fiancé Tom had just gotten out of the
hospital with his back the night before. We could not find his
seatbelt that morning, and I felt there must have been a reason
why. Maybe it was so he could save my life.
The driver’s name was “Tiny”. He drove a blue early ‘80s Ford
250 truck with a guard rail on the front. As he drove to Ukiah,
things were going well until he realized he left his cell phone
behind. So he turned around to head back to Lake Mendocino...
and fell asleep at the wheel. We were not all the way there
when I felt the truck go down the embankment. Just seconds
before this happened, I had a premonition I was going to be in
an accident. Sure enough, that’s what happened.
It was a scary experience to have lived through. California
highway patrol said we all were lucky to be alive, and he didn’t
know how we survived that wreck. As I woke up screaming my
head off, “Oh my god, Tiny! We went off the road!” I heard a
voice say, “Now is not your time to die.” My life flashed before
Dolphin English Reader book 5 99
my eyes, and that second I thought it was all over. I would be
leaving my boys behind for good. At that second, we hit the tree.
My head went forward and Tom braced himself in front of me
and the dashboard.
I felt like guardian
angels or my
deceased relatives
were there to save
my life. I had seen
them with my own
eyes. I thought that
was it when we hit
the tree. I saw my
cousin Rae Jean, my
great grandfather,
Julius Stevens,
whom I never met,
and many more.
I felt their energy
around me. I was
close to seeing the
light we all see before we die. I thought of my boys -- and that
brought me back to reality. Everything missed the dashboard
but my left knee.
