Preface
Dolphin English Reader is an interactive multi-skill English course book designed
for the basic level students (grade 1-8) who are learning English as a foreign
or second language. It’s an integrated learner-friendly course that compiles
all the four skills of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing in a
selective and graded manner. The course aims at preparing the learners for
communicative challenges in real life and thus developing them into efficient
communicators in the changed arena of global communication.
The fundamental principle of modern day learning is “Learning must be fun.”
For the very purpose the classroom environment and the selected activities
of the textbook must be inclusive, participatory and entertaining to all the
learners. Dolphin English Reader carefully considers this principle and has ten
sections in each unit (except 8 with purpose in grade one and 9 in two and
three) to ensure that the selected activities address the varied intelligence,
interest, motivation and reinforcement of the learners. Latest concepts in
English Language Teaching (ELT) like: critical analysis, task-based approach
and interactive classroom are fairly adapted by the course.
The lessons selected for the course are of diverse types. Some of them are
borrowed in their original form and some are simplified versions of texts written
by famous writers as per the grade and maturity level of the learners. Some
lessons are purely original as they have been created by the author. The texts
include all genres of language and literature: stories, poems, essays, one act
plays, reports, speeches, diary entries, biographies, travelogues, letters and
notices, covering themes across the curriculum. The lessons and activities are
taken from almost all areas of knowledge like literature, geography, history,
nature, science and technology, mathematics, anthropology, economics,
entertainment and more.
Dolphin English Reader is loosely based on the curriculum prepared by
Curriculum Development Centre, Nepal. The author’s researches on Child
Psychology and ELT during the fifteen-year-long experience as a teacher have
a crucial influence on the selection of lessons and activities. Author’s frequent
interactions with educationists, parents and teachers have also contributed a
lot in the framing and sketching of this course book.
I acknowledge my sincere gratitude to the entire family of Guinness Publications,
Kathmandu, Nepal. My school teachers, professors, colleagues in the
profession and students who are the greatest sources of my learning deserve
my decent respect. I am thankful to Mr. Ishwor Poudel for his review. I’m
indebted to Mr. Ram Bahadur Mochi for the most productive tips I’ve received.
The authors and writers whose creations have been used in the course are
above the line of respect.
I would humbly accept the suggestions of experts and the other concerned for
the betterment of this course book. I believe that this book will be inclusive and
entertaining enough for teaching and learning English in the classroom.

A DAy’s WAit
He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed
and I saw he looked ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he
looked slowly as though it ached to move.
12 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
What’t the
matter, Schatz?
“ I’ve got a
headache.”
“You better go
back to bed.”
“No I’m alright”
“You go up to
bed, I said, “You
are sick.”
“I’m alright,” he
said.
When the doctor came he took the boy’s temperature.
“What is it?” I asked him.
“One hundred and two.”
Downstairs, the doctor left three different medicines in different coloured
capsules with instructions for giving them. This was a light epidemic of
flu and there was no danger if you avoid pneumonia.
Back in the room I wrote the boy’s temperature down and made a note
of the time to give the various capsules.
“Do you want me to read to you?”
“Alright. If you want to,” said the boy. His face was very white and there
were dark areas under his eyes. He laid still in the bed.
I read aloud from Howard Pyle’s Book of Pirates; but I could see he was
not following what I was reading.
“How do you feel, Schatz?” I asked him.
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 13
“Just the same, so far,” he said.
“Why don’t you try to go to sleep? I’ll wake you up for the medicine.”
“I’d rather stay awake.”
After a while he said to me, “You don’t have to stay in here with me, Papa,
if it bothers you.”
I thought perhaps he was a little lightheaded and after giving him the
capsules at eleven o’clock I went out for a walk.
It was a bright, cold day, the ground covered with a sleet that has frozen
so that it seemed as if all the bare trees, the bushes, the cut brush and
all the grass and the bare ground had been varnished with ice. I took
the young Irish setter for a little walk up the road, but it was difficult to
stand or walk on the glassy surface.
At the house they said the boy has refused to let any one come into the
room. “You can’t come in,” he said. “You mustn’t get what I have.”
I went up to him and found him in exactly the position I had left him,
White-faced, but the tops of his cheeks flushed by the fever staring still,
as he has started, at the foot of the bed.
I took his temperature.
“Something like a hundred,” I said.
“It was a hundred and two,” he said.
“Who said so?”
“The doctor.”
“Your temperature is all right,” I said. It’s nothing to worry about.”
“I don’t worry,” he said, “but I can’t keep from thinking.”
“Take this with water.”
“Do you think it will do any good?”
14 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
“Of course it will.”
I sat down and opened the pirate book and started to read but I could
see he was not following, so I stopped.
“About what time do you think I’m going to die?” he asked.
“What?”
“About how long will it be before I die?”
“You aren’t going to die. What’s the matter with you?”
Oh, yes, I am. I heard him say a hundred and two.”
He had been waiting to die all day, ever since nine o’clock in the morning.
“You poor boy, I said. “Poor old Schatz. It’s like miles and kilometers. You
aren’t going to die. That’s a different thermometer. On that thermometer
thirty seven is normal. On this kind it’s ninety eight.”
“Are you sure?” “Absolutely,” I said. “It’s like how many kilometers we
make when we do seventy in the car?”
“Oh,” he said.
But his gaze at the foot of his bed relaxed slowly. The hold over himself
relaxed too, finally, and the next day it was very slack and he cried very
easily at little things that were of no importance.

2 Reading Time
Read the following biography and do the activities.
NelsoN MANDelA
Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918, in Mvezo village in South
Africa as the youngest son of his parents
Gadla Henry Mandela and Nosekeni
Nkedema. He was named Rolihlahla by
his father but later in his primary school,
his teacher gave him the name Nelson.
Mandela’s family belonged to the Thembu
tribe and his father Gadla, an imposing
and strict man was an important person
of the tribe.
When Mandela was nine years old his
father died. His mother got worried
about his future. So she took Mandela to
Jongintaba, the head of the Thembu tribe.
Jongintaba and his wife kept, brought up
and educated
Mandela in a very good environment. They treated him as if he was
their own son. It was at the royal homestead that Mandela’s personality,
values and political views were shaped.
Nelson completed his primary schooling at a local mission school and
then he went to Clarkebury Boarding School and then to Healdtown
school from where he completed his matriculation. Then at the age of
21 he enrolled as a student of BA in Forte Hare University. By then he
20 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
had developed a strong habit of protesting partiality and unjust. At the
university, once he joined a protest boycott and was suspended from
there.
A great turn in his life came after he was suspended from the university.
Jongintaba, his guardian announced that he had arranged marriages
for Mandela and Justice, the heir. Both of them obviously didn’t want to
marry so they ran away to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.
In Johannesburg Mandela completed his BA degree and studied law.
He was introduced to politics and got to realize how the whites were
exploiting the black people. He joined African National Congress (ANC),
which campaigned against discrimination and fought to win rights for
Africans. Mandela and his friends formed the ANC youth league and
urged for a stronger movement to end the discrimination.
In 1948 the South African
government introduced
Apartheid which formally
segregated the people
of different races. Under
Apartheid, the black
people were given little
facilities and economic
opportunities. Life had
really become very hard for
the blacks by then.
The ANC then believed that the government needed stronger pressure
to end this segregation. It launched the Defiance Campaign against
Apartheid and got its cadres and members to break the laws. In 1956
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 21
Mandela was arrested and was charged with treason that if proven,
Mandela would get a death penalty.
The Government’s oppression and ANC’s protest both were on the go.
Mandela in his leadership carried out a bombing as a protest. After
sometimes Mandela got to have a tour of Africa and Europe to gain
support for their movement. When he returned he was arrested again. He
was asked to confess and give up the movement but the adamant young
man felt it better to accept a penalty. He was then taken to the prison
in Robben Island and
was sentenced to life
imprisonment.
Life in Robben Island
was brutal. Mandela
and his friends were
category D prisoners.
They had the worst food
and least privileges of
all the prisoners. They
had to do a hard physical labour with little rest. While Mandela was in
prison, his wife was also sentenced to seventeen month imprisonment.
He could not get to see his five children for years. He was refused to
attend the funeral of his eldest son who was killed in a car accident. But
he never gave up. He continued to pass messages from the prison and
spread awareness in people.
Finally Mandela’s tree bore the fruit. He was released from the prison
in 1990 after twenty seven years. It was the time when South Africa
was in a complete unrest. After his release, a general election was held,
constitution was made and he became the first democratically elected
22 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
president of South Africa in 1994. He transformed South Africa into a
non-segregated prosperous nation and retired from politics in 1999. He
taught humanity to people. He encouraged people to never give up. For
his incredible contribution he was awarded with a number of titles and
prizes. He was awarded the most reputed Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He
died on December 5, 2013 at the age of 95. The whole world mourned
his death. Today he stands as a peace, struggle and leadership icon for
millions of people worldwide.

tAlkAtive tortoise
Once there lived a tortoise and two swans in a small pool in the forest. They
were quite good friends of one another. The swans were hardworking
and liked to speak less. But the tortoise was talkative. He liked to talk
more. Even a five-minute-rest for his mouth was a strange thing for the
swans.
One year the forest had little rainfall. The pond dried up. They had to
shift to another place and there was a problem. The swans would fly far
to a new pool but what would the tortoise do? He can’t fly, he can’t run,
he can just crawl which would take months for him to reach a new pool.
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 31
Finally they had an idea. The swans got a
strong stick, tied it on their backs and asked
the tortoise to hold the stick in its mouth so
that all the three could fly together. Before they
started they warned the tortoise not to open
his mouth.
Flying had been fun before the tortoise thought
of thanking his friends for the help. He started,

stick and fell down. The swans sadly watched
him die.

the stoNecutter
Once upon a time there
lived a stonecutter, who
went every day to a great
rock in the side of a big
mountain and cut out slabs
for gravestones or for
houses. He understood very
well the kinds of stones
wanted for the different
purposes, and as he was a
careful workman he had plenty of customers. For a long time he was
quite happy and contented, and asked for nothing better than what he
had.
Now in the mountain dwelt a spirit which now and then appeared to
men, and helped them in many ways to become rich and prosperous.
The stonecutter, however, had never seen this spirit, and only shook his
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 37
head, with an unbelieving air, when anyone spoke of it. But a time was
coming when he learned to change his opinion.
One day the stonecutter carried a gravestone to the house of a rich man,
and saw there all sorts of beautiful things, of which he had never even
dreamed. Suddenly his daily work seemed to grow harder and heavier,
and he said to himself: “Oh, if only I were a rich man, and could sleep in
a bed with silken curtains and golden tassels, how happy I should be!”
And a voice answered him: “Your wish is heard; a rich man you shall be!”
At the sound of the voice the stonecutter looked around, but could see
nobody. He thought it was all his fancy, and picked up his tools and went
home, for he did not feel inclined to do any more work that day. But when
he reached the little house where he lived, he stood still with amazement,
for instead of his wooden hut was a stately palace filled with splendid
furniture, and most splendid of all was the bed, in every respect like the
one he had envied. He was nearly beside himself with joy, and in his new
life the old one was soon forgotten.
It was now the beginning of summer, and each day the sun blazed more
fiercely. One morning the heat was so great that the stonecutter could
scarcely breathe, and he determined he would stop at home till the
evening. He was rather dull, for he had never learned how to amuse
himself, and was peeping through the closed blinds to see what was
going on in the street, when a little carriage passed by, drawn by servants
dressed in blue and silver. In the carriage sat a prince, and over his head
a golden umbrella was held, to protect him from the sun’s rays.
“Oh, if I were only a prince!” said the stonecutter to himself, as the
carriage vanished around the corner. “Oh, if I were only a prince, and
could go in such a carriage and have a golden umbrella held over me,
how happy I should be!”
38 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
And a prince he was.
Before his carriage rode
one company of men
and another behind
it; servants dressed in
scarlet and gold bore
him along, the coveted
umbrella was held over
his head, everything his
heart could desire was
his. But yet it was not
enough. He looked around still for something to wish for, and when he
saw that in spite of the water he poured on the grass the rays of the sun
scorched it, and that in spite of the umbrella held over his head each
day his face grew browner and browner, he cried in his anger: “The sun
is mightier than I; oh, if I were only the sun!”
And the mountain spirit answered: “Your wish is heard; the sun you shall
be.”
And the sun he was, and felt himself proud in his power. He shot his
beams above and below, on earth and in heaven; he burnt up the grass
in the fields and scorched the faces of princes as well as of poorer folk.
But in a short time he began to grow tired of his might, for there seemed
nothing left for him to do. Discontent once more filled his soul, and when
a cloud covered his face, and hid the earth from him, he cried in his anger:
“Does the cloud hold captive my rays, and is it mightier than I? Oh, that I
were a cloud, and mightier than any!”
And the mountain spirit answered: “Your wish is heard; a cloud you shall
be!”
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 39
And a cloud he was, and lay between the sun and the earth. He caught
the sun’s beams and held them, and to his joy the earth grew green again
and flowers blossomed. But that was not enough for him, and for days
and week he poured forth rain till the rivers overflowed their banks, and
the crops of rice stood in water. Towns and villages were destroyed by
the power of the rain, only the great rock on the mountainside remained
unmoved. The cloud was amazed at the sight, and cried in wonder: “Is
the rock, then, mightier than I? Oh, if I were only the rock!”
And the mountain spirit answered; “Your wish is heard; the rock you
shall be!”
And the rock he was, and gloried
in his power. Proudly he stood,
and neither the heat of the sun
nor the force of the rain could
move him. “This is better than
all!” he said to himself. But one
day he heard a strange noise
at his feet, and when he looked
down to see what it could be,
he saw a stonecutter driving
tools into his surface. Even while he looked a trembling feeling ran all
through him, and a great block broke off and fell upon the ground. Then
he cried in his wrath: “Is a mere child of earth mightier than a rock? Oh,
if I were only a man!”
And the mountain spirit answered: “Your wish is heard. A man once
more you shall be!”
And a man he was, and in the sweat of his brow he toiled again at his
trade of stone cutting. His bed was hard and his food scanty, but he
40 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
had learned to be satisfied with it, and did not long to be something
or somebody else. And as he never asked for things he did not have, or
desired to be greater and mightier than other people, he was happy at
last, and never again heard the voice of the mountain spirit.

10 Reading Time 2
Read the following speech on “Being Happy” by Sofi Rodriguez, a
grade six student from India and do the activities given.
Friends have you ever thought about the thing that can make us happy?
Happiness differs from people to people. A young kid feels that happiness
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 49
lies with its mother, the moment the child sees the mother it smiles and
stops crying! Wouldn’t that be
wonderful if we all stopped cribbing
and complaining if we felt the same
happiness, when we grow up! As we
grow older the essence of happiness
differs. Man is always in the pursuit
of happiness but never finds it in his
lifetime. I think this is because he is
always running after it, the running is so fast that he doesn’t realize it
when it’s near him or with him. As the child grows he finds happiness in
small things like new toys, new dress, sweets etc. When they grow still
further they try to find happiness in their friends. When they are big
enough they try to find happiness in other people by falling in love. Many
people find happiness in making money, so they are always on the run,
in search of big careers and thus minting money. Finally, when they make
enough money and when they are about to enjoy this money, they realize
that it’s about time to spend the money in hospitals. Finally that’s where
we all end up! Do you think this is how it should be? I think given any
situation or circumstances people can be happy. Happiness lies within. I
would like to cite a few examples here: As we go for a walk in the morning,
if we come across a hungry animal like a cat or a puppy, we can be happy
just by giving it a little milk or water. Later during the day as we enter
the world of stress we can be happy by the fact that we fed a little animal
today, if that thought can make us smile and feel proud, I feel that is true
happiness. Many a times we see elderly people playing together with
children, the happiness that we see on their faces are so genuine, that we
too smile at the sight; sometimes we just brush it off thinking that they
are crazy! Have you ever thought about that moment? That small game
that they are playing together takes that grandpa out for a temporary
period from this stressful world, and makes him also a child for a short
