Elmer, a less known artist from Massachusetts, USA. Grieved by the

the death of the artist. In 1965 Adrienne Rich was so deeply touched
by the picture that she was inspired to write a poem on it, and thus the
poem was created. The poem is a perfect example of how literature
and art can be the sources of inspiration for each other.

2 Reading Time

Read the story below and do the activities.
DiGitAl cloNe

Doctor Datta woke

up on the beeping of

his computer. While
he walked down
the stairs to his lab,

the surveillance

cameras tracked
his movements for
the last time, along

with the cameras

fitted on his minus
eight powered
glasses. Today was to be Doctor Animesh Datta’s last day of self analysis

programme. For ten weeks he had carried on the programme, keeping

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 117

his computer always in position, which analysed his brain’s working
pattern, coordination pattern, emotions, hormonal secretions, to create

a near exact digital clone of his. Near exact, because hunger, growth,
excretion, reproduction and death were to be exempted from the clone’s

brain. Today, doctor Datta’s dream was to be turned to a reality.
Doctor Datta opened the door to his lab. His computer monitor was

displaying, DIGITAL CLONING COMPLETE. Animesh connected the clone

to Servo, his housekeeping humanoid robot. The robot stretched its arms
just like Animesh does when he wakes up. Then it looked straight at
Animesh and stood still for a while. Animesh asked, “What happened?”

“Are you... me?” Servo asked in a confused, mechanical voice. Animesh

now understood. His digital clone thought that he was the real, human
Animesh. And he was surprised to see the actual Animesh. Animesh was
actually happy to see his confused clone. He knew that if he would tell

him the truth, he would digest it.

“Yes, I am you. Do you feel hungry?” Animesh asked Servo.

“No.”

“But you generally feel hungry after waking up, don’t you?”
“Yes. But I think my stomach is upset.”

Now Animesh took Servo in front of the mirror in his lab.

“Look at your reflection,” Animesh said.

Servo stood for a while. Then he looked up at Animesh.

“Am I not real?”

“No! You are a machine, not a living being! I created you.”

“Then why did you give me the feelings of being real?”
“Experiment, experiment. Don’t worry. I have removed the vital

physiological processes of human beings from your program. You won’t

118 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

feel uncomfortable.”
That full day Servo was ordered several times by Animesh - “One cup

coffee, please!” “Clean that stain, will you?” “Attend the phone.” Thank

god, Animesh had removed the REBEL part from his clone’s brain
program! He now virtually had two brains, one his, one his clone’s.
Whenever Servo had an idea, he suggested it to Animesh. Animesh also

did the same.

A year had passed. Animesh was giving a demo of his latest invention,
the Infinite Power Source. The idea was actually of Servo, and he himself

had completed the task of making it. Animesh gave full credit to Servo.
However, the great scientists present were not convinced. “Do machines

even have imagination?” “Can they even think?” “You are a fraud.” These
comments jerked Animesh’s mind. He proved to them, comparing his

brain pattern to the functioning of his clone’s CPU. The next day the
headlines were - DOCTOR ANIMESH DATTA INVENTS INVENTOR ROBOT.

NOVEL PRIZE GUARANTEED.

Day by day Animesh’s fame grew. One night he woke up hearing a BEEP
BEEP sound of the computer of his lab. Animesh became puzzled. No

experiment was under progress. He got down from his bed, and saw
Servo at his computer. The computer was displaying, INSTALLING

PSYCHOLOGICAL MALWARE...

Seeing Animesh enter the room, it turned its head towards him for a
while and then again looked at the computer screen.

“Why on earth are you installing a malware into your system? You want

to kill yourself?” Animesh was shocked.
“Dying is better than living like a servant, seeing another entity get fame

for something I have done, not getting any praise, except from your
master!” The voice of Servo was damped with sorrow.

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 119

“Look! I try to tell people that your inventions are yours alone, not mine!
What else can I do?”

“Hey! Don’t get senti. You have to do nothing else. You can do nothing

now!”
The computer screen showed, VIRUS COPIED - 100%. The robot got up.

“You wanna see the effect of the malware? See!”

It opened the psychological composition of its brain.

POSITIVITY 30%

NEGATIVITY 100%

PEACE 10%

VIOLENCE 100%
Animesh was shocked.

Servo had turned itself
into a killer machine.

It got up in a jiffy and
ran towards Animesh.

It grabbed his throat,
“Everything I will do,

and you will take the
credit!” Animesh held

Servo’s hands and tried
to free himself. His face

became purple from
asphyxiation. He at last succeeded to free himself. He ran and took an

iron rod. He inflicted a few hits on Servo, “Remember, had I not been
there you wouldn’t have seen the light of the world. I created you and I

have the full right to destroy you.”

Servo backed down. In a slow and hoarse voice it said its last words,

120 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

“Creators are not the masters of their creations. The stain of murder
would never leave your soul.” The hit had damaged his CPU. The next

thing he did was to delete the software of his digital clone.

Animesh stopped inventing; he joined an IT company under a new
identity. Doctor Animesh Datta was dead for the world. He still remembers
the day he destroyed his clone. A few questions still haunt him - did he

destroy it or kill it? Did it deserve to be regarded as a human? Was it

itself its owner? However the biggest haunting question was - they say
soul lives on forever. Will it be the same case for his clone?

the floor of the kitchen. The mouse was
successful to escape the chase and enter
into his hole in the other corner of the

room.

Safe in his hole, the mouse with a long

breath said, “I didn’t know they had a new
cat. Boy, he is fast and furious!”

While he was thinking about how he got

away from the new cat, the mouse felt
very proud of himself. “I’m really a clever

fellow, if I have to say so myself,” he said. “No cat is as clever as I
am!”

Soon after he heard, “Arf! Arf and the scream of the cat out in the
kitchen. The mouse was happy that the cat must be in trouble. “Oh,

boy! Oh boy!” he exclaimed. “The dog is after the cat! I have to go
and see that stupid cat run!”

The mouse scampered out of his hole into the room and looked,

“WHAM! Something came from behind and slammed down on his

tail. Before he could turn around, the mouse felt himself between

“Oho, no!” he said, as he looked up into the piercing eyes of the cat.

“How can this be? I heard the bark and the scream, and I thought
the dog...”

“It pays to be bilingual,” interrupted the cat, as he looked down at
the mouse and smiled.

10 Reading Time 2

Read the following essay and do the activities.
sPAce trAvel

We have entered the era of space travel. Men who will first land on the

moon are already among us. Time is not far off

when we will travel to other planets as we travel
now to other countries. Gagarin, Titov, Sheppard,
and others have already proved that it is possible

to cross the limit of the gravity of the earth and

travel anywhere in space.

In order to escape the gravitational pull of
the earth, a speed of at least seven miles per

second is necessary. This speed is possible only
by means of a rocket. It is an aero-plane that flies up speedier than a

bullet.

It has to be fired in a fixed direction like a gun. When it escapes the
gravitational pull of the earth, another rocket comes out of the first

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 131

rocket and continues the journey upward to any destination without any
friction because there is nothing, not even air, to slow down its speed.

Space travel raises many problems. The

first is the problem of refueling and
supplies. This will be accomplished by

means of a floating platform round the

earth on which supplies of all kinds

will be stored and this will be used for
landing and repairing purposes. This

inter¬planetary station will be the

first stage. We may need many such

inter¬planetary stations if we attempt
long voyages to distant planets like the

Mars.

Another problem is that of weightlessness. Once we escape the gravity
of the earth we will cease to have any weight. We will be able to walk

on the roof or walls like an ant. In that case we will need magnet in our

shoes to keep us tied to the iron floors. All our tables, chairs, etc., will

have to be nailed or they will start flying like a magician’s work.

Food is the third problem. It will not be possible for us to eat or drink

anything in the usual way. Since there will be no gravity, it will not be

possible to push the food down our throats by the common method of
putting it into our mouth. Food will have to be taken in tubes such as

we use for toothpaste purposes. It will have to be put in the mouth and

pulled down into the stomach by practice.

132 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

Atmosphere will be the fourth problem. We will have to carry air in
sealed bottles, because there is no air above in the space and we cannot

live without air. Both air and water will have to be carried along with

other necessaries of life.

Those who first land on the moon will not find it that interesting place

which it appears to be on a

moonlit night. It may be a
dry, deserted and dead world

where nothing grows. Men

who go there will enjoy the

earthlight as we enjoy the
moonlight here.

The problem of space travel

will be overcome in stages.
Space travel offers much

romantic possibility. Science

has brought many wonders

and if man succeeds in space
travel on a large scale, it will

open the mysteries of other

planets.

America’s Saturn rockets, Gemini’s and Surveyors, and Russia’s Sputniks,

Cosmoses, etc. are taking mankind nearer the conquest of moon. It is

now a matter of a couple of years of waiting to see the glorious day. The

research is already nearing completion.

2.1. Read the story and dot he activities.

heM suBBA Ate PAAN

Hem Subba was

new in town. But
when the short
man walked down

the paved road

clacking his heels,
many of the town’s
shopkeepers bent

low to offer him

their namaskar. He
too was well-bred,
and made sure to

please everyone by returning their greetings. In fact, the reason he

didn’t ride a car hindered him from making direct contact with the
people.

Hem Subba became renowned overnight through the town. Tales about

his personality spread in out-of-the-way corners, His short profile

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 137

covered the entire urban landmass. Word spread of the politeness of
his speech, and praises were sung about the courtesy of his manners.

His liberalism was immense. Nuch talk was generated on the matter of
his ways and habits: Hem Subba doesn’t ride a car. Hem Subba wears

thick eyeglasses. Hem subba never touches money with his hands. Hem
Subba doesn’t wear a watch. Hem Subba doesn’t drink liquor or smoke

cigarettes. Hem Subba doesn’t have a wife.

Leaving aside his habit of wearing eyeglasses for a moment; for each of
his ways, there were alternative ways.

Hem Subba doesn’t ride a car; he’s rich enough to ride a jeep; He doesn’t
touch money with his hands; his pockets are filled with coins.

Hem Subba doesn’t wear a watch; he carries a gold chain watch instead.

Hem Subba doesn’t drink liquor; beer does the trick for him.

Hem Subba doesn’t have a wife (she died in a delivery case); there are
pictures of four or five young women in his photo album.

Meaning, though there was some measure of renunciation in his ways,
it was not possible to vie him as extraordinary or strange. Do people
become extraordinary merely because they are talked about? Hem

Subba was ordinary healthy man. But for his slight stammer, hs words

were pleasant to hear. Yet it was true that one or two of his habits were
odd. For instance, Hem Subba never ate paan.

Now paan was all the rage in the town. Everyone’s mouth was stained

fed. Hem Subba sometimes deigned to chew betel nuts, but he never ate
paan. Betel nuts alone, however, do not add to the beauty one’s mouth.

There was a rich merchant in the town who was very amicable about

eating and feeding others paan. He saw that Hem Subba was breaking
the town’s tradition; the culture was about to erode.

138 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

One day of the spring festival of colours (Holi), the merchant arranged
large rolls of paan on a steel plate and made a request, “Hajur, you must

try this today.”

Hem Subba was enflamd: “Don’t you know that I never eat paan? I don’t
want to look like I’ve rubbed blood on my mouth by eating paan. Paan

causes cancer! Please return that plate at once!’

Hem Subba didn’t eat any paan. The merchant got quite worried; was
the town’s culture doomed to erode, then?

He made a second attempt. He invited Hem Subba to his daughter’s
wedding. Hem Subba came. The merchant offered him a few rolls of
paan on a silver plate. He said, “Hajoor, on the occasion of my daughter’s

wedding some special paan.”

This time Hem Subba spoke calmly, “Sahuji paan does not suit my health,

thank you, I will have the cloves and cardamoms.”

Thme came for Hem Subba’s daughter’s wedding. Hem Subba looked
very worried: what was he to do, how was to proceed? Marrying off a

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 139

daughter is quite difficult. One mus consider one’s own good name as
well as the good names of the town’s important people by inviting them

all. Big preparation got on the way.

Two days before the wedding, the merchant appeared and asked, “Hajoor,
might I be of any service?”

“Thank you Sahuji for the word, but there’s nothing particular for you to
do,” Hem subba said.

“No need to worry, Hajoor,” said the merchant. “We are always there

for you. How could the marriage of your four daughters diminish your
resplendent wealth? And even if it happened, it would be replenished by

the god, if they so pleased.”

For a while there was a talk of other matters related to the wedding.
After this, the merchant slowly took out a plate, this time of gold. The

merchant had also brought along some paan. He arranged a few rolls

on the plate. These were silver-coated paans giving off the fragrance of
roses.

The merchant said, “Eat these, hajoor, you must enjoy yourself at the

time of your daughter’s wedding. You daughter is mine too, after all.”

The merchant had spoken extremely warmly, in a way that touched the

heart. Hem Subba hesitated, “But Sahuji, perhaps this will cause harm!”

“No, Hajoor, it will cause no harm at all. I’ve fed paan to some very
important people, and it’s never harmed anyone. Paan increases blood,

it digests food; just try eating one, this once.”

This time Hem Subba pulled the plate towards himself. He put one paan
in his mouth, and experiencing its taste and the pleasure of its juices, he

said, “Sahuji, I never knew in all my days that paan could be so juicy.”

140 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

The merchant smiled and said, “There was just this one flaw in your ways,
hajoor. In all other respects, you were a diamond, an absolute diamond.”

“So when will you feed me paan next, Sahuji?

“I’ll attend it at once, hajoor,” the merchant said, placing his hand in his
pocket.

this time Hem Subba took a double helping, and put it in his mouth,

looking very pleased. He ordered the merchant never to come to his
house without bringing some paan. Then he strode towards the jeep that

the merchant had prepared for him to go shopping for his daughter’s
wedding.
