span of time. This small deed can make him feel happy for the rest of the
day. If we learn to smile in all the small things that we do throughout the
day, it will keep us positive. Being positive, we will have good thoughts,

words and deeds throughout the day. We should learn the mantra, “it
will pass” as we all know that whatever be the situation it will not be

permanent, it will pass. This is also a secret mantra to be happy. So
friends, I think in this big world true happiness lies within you, it’s only
a matter of pausing for a while, acknowledging it and smiling! So be

happy whenever, wherever and always. Make happiness a habit.

Mother NAture’s cry

It took me a long while

To better the way you live.
Since you have turned hostile,

I’ve got no more to give.

My land is filled with waste
My children are displaced.

They live in utter fear,
Watching friends disappear.

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 55

You treat me like a joke:
Choke me up with your smoke,

Strip me of any clothes,
And leave me with my foes.

I have become man-made,

Who serves you like a maid.
Unnatural and impure,

A disease with no cure.

Do you know how I feel?
See the scars I conceal?

I lost my rights and voice
You leave me with no choice.

I am shaped based on greed.

In pain, I sob and bleed.
I have been infected,

Abused and neglected.

Do you hear me crying?
I am sick and dying.

You are my therapy
Love me and set me free.

My children, I love you.

I hope you love me too.
Your mother needs you now.

Help me I’ll show you how.

56 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

Recycle and conserve,
Heed the rights I deserve.

Hear my weakening voice,
Help me regain my poise.

It seems that what you do

Has more effect on you.
I am Mother Nature,

Not a human for sure.

You live the life you drain:
You breathe the air you stain

Drink the water you soil,
And eat the food you spoil.

My gifts you must protect:

From air to ocean shelf.
My love you should respect

Save me to save yourself.

In every living thing we see

There must a great Creator be.
The tree that grows from out the sod

Points aloft to nature’ God;
The mighty ocean lone and wild

Reveals a God to ocean’s child;
The lofty hills echoing call

There is a God that made us all.

THE man or woman who sees no beauty in surrounding nature has a soul
that sleeps. From the star-spangled canopy of heaven to the far bottom

of the majestic ocean, created earth is teeming with wondrous beauty.

There is endless beauty above in the clouds that sweep over the blue

ethereal sky; the mountain tops and the valleys below reveal the work of

a creating God; the vast plains of the East, and the primeval forests of the
West, display the art, power, and glory of an omnipotent architect. The

beasts of the field that roam at will o’er created earth, call forth wonder

and admiration for Him who gave them life; the birds that soar through
the firmament on high strike awe into the breast of frail weak humanity;

and the leviathan as it traverses the mighty deep, followed by myriads

of fish and fowl, causes him to fear the awful majesty of God. The rivers

that roll for thousands of miles down to their mother ocean, the seas

that join continent to continent, the lakes that reflect the grandeur of the
heavens, the adamantine rocks and cliffs, the hoary majesty of the Arctic

and Antarctic circles, the Eden beauty of the tropics, the wild grandeur

of the southern ocean and the storm-tossed northern seas; the vast
plains of Africa and Australia, the jungles of Asia and South America,

the volcanoes of the old and the new world, the hot springs of the Rocky

mountains and the icebergs of the southern seas; the ice-bound coast

of Labrador and the fairy islands of the vast Pacific--make man gaze
spellbound on the works of the Almighty, and plant in the breast of

the youthful savage an instinctive desire to worship the countless orbs

of heaven, the everlasting hills of earth, and the glorious beauty of all

created nature.

I’m awake, drenched. My forehead and back covered in sweat. I sit up

and look around. I can not see a single thing. My hand is invisible in front
of my face. Complete blackness. All I see is three fuzzy red illuminated

numbers. 3:37 am. There is no sound whatsoever except the heavy
breaths I am taking. I start to wonder why this is happening. Why did I

wake up? Why am I drenched?

I hear creaking from the wooden floor in the hallway. It is coming towards

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 75

my room. My door starts to slowly
open. The rust on the hinges makes

a cringing sound. The creaking picks
up again. Louder than before. I feel a

presence in my room. I still cannot
see a single thing. It is like I am

blind. I am too frightened to move or
make any noise. So I hold my breath

hoping that I do not make a single
sound. I feel the presence lingering

over me. My time is up though. I
gasp for air about to pass out from

not breathing.

“Who is there?” I frightfully asked.

“It is me.”

Wait. I know that voice. It is deep, soft and husky. It can not be who I

think it is. “Jacob?”

“Yes little brother, it is me.”

“But how? You died in Afghanistan.”

“I know, but I am here now.”

“But how? I do not understand.” I begin to cry “You….. died Jacob. YOU
DIED!” I start yelling at him “How could you do that to me! You left me!”

Jacob slowly let out a sigh that you could tell was full of worry and

depression. He slowly starts to talk. “Little brother, listen. I have not come
to talk about me. I have come to talk about you, and a serious warning I

have for you.”

76 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

I look up from crying. As tears are rolling down my cheeks and snot is
slowly running from my nose, “What warning do you have for me Jacob?”

He delays and lets out another one of those awful sighs. “Whatever you

do little brother do not lose sight of your loved ones, you have already
lost too much, and whatever you do, do not let anyone drive a car unless

you are driving.”

“What?”

“I can not stay any longer, I have

already said too much.”

“What do you mean?” I frantically

ask out of panic.

“I am sorry little brother, I have to
go.”

“NO! Jacob, what do you mean, do

not let anyone drive except me?” I

look around in the dark. Waiting
for an answer from my older
brother. “Jacob!” I scream. He is

gone. I start to have an anxiety

attack. I start panicking. I can
not catch my breath. My heart is
racing, and my chest is pounding.

I feel like I am about to pass out.

I am blinded by the brightest light I have ever experienced. I am

overwhelmed by the constant ringing in my ear. It is all blurry and I am
lost. I tell myself to “get up, and move.”

My senses start to come to the realization of what is going on. The bright

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 77

light becomes less extreme, and slowly starts to become something
I recognize. I see it is sunlight coming in from a window right beside

the bed I am lying in. I squint and start to look outside. Then something
grabs my attention real quick. I hear the constant ringing turn into a

telephone. I then hear my own voice.

“Hey you’ve reached John and Bethany Smith, I’m sorry we couldn’t get
to the phone, but just leave a message and we will get back to you. Have

a good day!”

I stare at the phone that is lying on my night stand, and the next thing

I know the phone goes “beep.” The sweetest most elegant voice I have
ever heard comes out.

“Hey babe you looked so peacefully sleeping and I know you are still

super sad about losing Jacob last week, so I did not want to wake you up.
I thought it would be sweet if I went to pick up some donuts and coffee

for us, so I just got in the car and I am pulling out of the driveway right
now. I love you, and I will see you in a few minutes.”

Simultaneously my eyes opened up as wide as they could, and my mouth

dropped. I jumped up out of my bed, and started sprinting down the

hallway towards the front door. As I was running I yelled “NO. Jacob!”
I reached for the doorknob, but I threw the door open. I heard the
squealing of tires trying to stop, but It was just too late.

Puerto Rico. Also known as the “Devil’s Triangle”, this unexplained
phenomenon has provided an ample battlefield for a fierce controversy
that has raged since the early 1960s.

The Bermuda Triangle was first mentioned in a report in 1950 by
E.V.W. Jones as a side note to the many ships lost in the area. The name

appeared two years later in a Fate magazine article, by George X. Sand.
Books on UFOs (unidentified flying objects) in the late fifties also spoke
of the triangle, suggesting that it was alien in nature. The term “Bermuda

Triangle” was not coined until 1964, when Vincent H. Gaddis brought
it to light as “The Deadly Bermuda Triangle”’ in an article in Argosy
magazine. Bermuda Triangle fever peaked in 1974, with a number of

books on it getting international attention.

One of the most famous disappearances involves an entire team of five

US Navy TBM Avenger Torpedo Bombers, known as “Flight 19”. On
December 5, 1945, Flight 19 departed from the US Naval Air Station,

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a routine training mission. All five planes
were well fueled and in top running conditions. Later that same date,
all five planes were mysteriously lost at sea. Even the rescue plane with

thirteen crew members sent after them disappeared. No trace of the
planes or of the crew members has ever been found.

The matter of an unusual number of disappearances in the area of the

Bermuda Triangle is not really in doubt; the cause of the disappearances,
however, is. Skeptics chalk the “Mystery” up to the strong currents of

the region, the gulf stream forcing a large portion of the Triangle’s tides
to flow directly north, throwing many would-be sailors off course and
out to sea. Also pointed out is the great discrepancy between magnetic

North, and the North Pole in the region (a fact noted by Columbus on his
voyage), but this explanation is not good enough for some. Surely there
are many places in the world with dangerous currents and directional

90 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

difficulties. Why is the Bermuda Triangle host to so many unfortunate
accidents?

Some believe that aliens are one possible reason. Anti –gravity technology

or otherworldly energies may be sent off by a downed UFO, as many of
the early reports of the Triangle believed. Also, the Triangle may provide
an undersea Earth base for aliens who value privacy, and send out

energies to confuse vessels coming a little too close to home.

Lastly many believe that the Bermuda Triangle Phenomenon is caused by

the lost city of Atlantis, sunk thousands of feet below the water surface.
The advanced state of Atlantis at the time of its submersion relied on
the power of energy crystals. It is possible that these crystals are still

at the bottom of the ocean, in a somewhat altered state, sending out
rays of energy that either confuse the instrumentation of vehicles, or
disintegrate them all together.

It’s hard to even get a scholar to mention the Triangle these days, for fear
of it dirtying their names.

2 Reading Time

Read and act out the following play in your class, then do the exercises
that follow.

Pity the Fool

(A man, George hangs on the wall as a part of modern art piece. People

walk through the gallery and look at the odd pieces of modern art. A couple
of women, Sage and Mary stop at the man)

Sage : What is this?
Mary : It’s called “Pity the

Fool.”
Sage : It’s amazing. The

man looks lifelike.
Mary : It’s like he could

walk right out of
the painting and

talk to us. (Suddenly
George’s eyes pop

open and the women are startled.)
George : Do you have any water? (His eyes close again. Sage and Mary

look at each other and then the painting again.)
Sage : You heard that right?

Mary : Yeah.
George : Water.

Sage : I’ll get some water. (Sage leaves. Mary wants to follow and
doesn’t want to be left alone.)

George : Wait, please.
(Mary reluctantly stops. She looks around but is alone. She

cautiously returns.)

96 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

Mary : What? Uh...who? I mean...

George : Why am I here?
Mary : Sure... let’s ask that question.

George : This is my self portrait.
Mary : Pity the fool?

George : Yes.

Mary : Well... it’s working. I feel sorry for you.
George : Everyone does.

Mary : Oh... (Mary looks around nervously hoping Sage will return.
George climbs down off the background and sits at the edge

of the art looking very hurt and sad. Sage returns with some

bottled water.)
Sage : Found some water. (George takes it from her and gives a weak

smile.)

George : Thank you. (George drinks and lets the water refresh him. Mary
and Sage look at each other and then at George nervously)

Mary : So uh... this is a self portrait.

Sage : Are you the artist?
George : Yes.

Sage : I have to say I’ve never seen anything like this.
George : It’s a variation on the living statue idea.

Mary : So, not original?

George : Not really. They are all quite a moment.
Sage : Well, I have never seen anything like this.

George : Then you haven’t been out much.
Sage : What? Look, we’re trying to be nice.

George : Because you pity me.

Mary : That’s what you want, isn’t it?

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 97

George : How do you know what I want?
(Sage and Mary start to back away. George curls up at the

bottom of his art.)
Sage : Look, I think you’re little too much of a method artist. (George

starts to cry.)
Mary : Is he crying?

Sage : Let’s get out of here before he totally flips out.
Mary : But he’s so sad.
Sage : It’s some twisted performance art, I think.

Mary : You have to admit. It’s pretty original.
Sage : Just because it is different doesn’t mean it’s good.

(George looks up sadly at Sage)
George : You... you don’t think it’s good?
Sage : Let’s go. (Sage tries to go but Mary doesn’t leave)

Mary : I think it’s one of the most interesting things I’ve ever seen.
George : You’re saying that to be nice. You don’t really feel that way.

Mary : I do, really. Art is always so bland and two dimensional. Your
work is so... alive... literally. (George gives Sage a pouty look)

George : She hates it enough. (Sage gives George a dirty look and George
gets sad and collapses into his art.)

Mary : Say something nice to him.
(Sage reluctantly goes up to George. Mary pushes her closer
and Sage is next to him.)

Sage : Ok, I have to admit. This is the most unusual... (Mary pokes her)
different... most creative piece of art here tonight.

George (weakly) : Thank you. (Sage turns to Mary and pulls her away.)
Sage : Can we go now?

Mary : You go. I’ll catch up in a minute.
Sage : Whatever. (Sage leaves. Mary goes up to George and kneels

down next to him.)

98 Dolphin English Reader Book 6

Mary : What happened to you that inspired this? (George sits up slowly
and looks up at his background.)

George : It’s a long story. Everything you see here represents something

that happened in my life that has brought me to this point.
Mary : The images are stunning. I’ve never seen a work of art with so

much story to it. I could probably sit here for hours trying to
figure it all out.

George : Stay then.
Mary : I’ve to go... how long will you be... on display?

George : This is the last night. I’ll hopefully be showing this in other
galleries though.

(Mary gives him a business card.)

Dolphin English Reader Book 6 99

Mary : I’d like to see you... and your work again. Here’s my number.
Call me when you’re showing this again.

George : I will.
Mary : I better go. Great work on this. It’s very moving.

(George gives a weak smile and waves good-bye as Mary leaves.
He climbs up back into his original position. Frank enters and

goes up to George.)
Frank : You got another number, didn’t you?

George : Yup.
Frank : There has to be an easier way to pick up women.

George : What can I say? I am a fool.
Frank : Ain’t that the truth?
