2 Reading Time
Read the following poem and do the activities.
soMeBoDy’s Mother
The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the Winter’s day.
The street was wet with a recent snow,
And the woman’s feet were aged and slow.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng.
Of human beings who passed her by,
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of ‘school let out,’
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.
Past the woman so old and gray,
Hastened the children on their way.
156 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
Nor offered a helping hand to her—
So meek, so timid, and afraid to stir.
Lest the carriage wheels or the horses’ feet,
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.
At last came one of the merry troop,
The gayest lad of all the group.
He paused beside her and whispered low,
“I’ll help you cross, if you wish to go.”
Her aged hand on his strong young arm,
She placed, and so, without hurt or harm.
He guided the trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content.
“She’s somebody’s mother, boys, you know,
For all she’s aged and poor and slow,
And I hope some fellow will lend a hand,
To help my mother, you understand,
If ever she’s poor and old and grey,
And her own dear boy is far away.”
“Somebody’s mother” bowed low her head,
In her home that night, and the prayer she said.
Was, “God be kind to the noble boy,
Who is somebody’s son, and pride and joy!”

Kimberly Clark, who lives and works
in London, England, seems like a
normal young woman of twenty-five.
She’s pretty, she loves to dance, and
she has many friends. Also she has a
good position in the office of a large
company.
Kim Clark does have a problem,
however. The problem is that she has
a mysterious dream. It’s mysterious
because it is a dream about a person
and place which are completely strange
to her. And it is mysterious also because
it is a recurring dream. That is, she
dreams the same thing frequently. Finally, she has the same dream
almost every night.
The strange dream always begins on a country road. Kim stands on this
road and sees a lane with a white fence and a hedge on each side. At the
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 173
end of the lane, on the top of a little hill, she sees a small, white cottage
with green shutters. In the dream, she then walks up the lane to the
house, goes in, and looks around. In one of the rooms she finds a man
asleep in bed. He is a little, old man with white hair and a white beard.
In the dream, when Kim comes near his bed, the man wakes up. Then
he sits up and looks at her. When Kim opens her mouth to speak to him,
however, she wakes up in her apartment in London.
The dream bothers Kim very much. It’s all so strange! She knows no place
or house like that. She doesn’t know any little, old man like that either.
And yet, night after night she has the same dream. In the dream, she’s
always on the same country road. She sees the same lane with the same
hedge and white fence. And at the end of the lane stands the same small,
white cottage with green shutters. And each time, when she enters the
house and looks around, she sees the same little, old man asleep in bed.
And every time, when she opens her mouth to speak to him, she wakes
up in her own bed in London.
Kimberly speaks frequently with her roommate, Janet Wilson, about the
recurring dream. One day Janet says, “Kim, let’s go out to my parents’
farm for a few days. It’s so peaceful there.”
“That sounds like a good idea,” answers Kim with tears in her eyes. “The
dream troubles me so much. It’s on my mind constantly.”
Kim and Janet make plans to go to the country. And early the next
Saturday morning they leave the city in Janet’s car. As soon as they are
away from the sights and sounds of the city, Kim sits back on the seat
beside her friend and closes her eyes. A little later, as Janet turns the car
onto a country road, Kim wakes up. In a second, her eyes open wide.
‘There it is, Jan.” she exclaims. “There it is.”
174 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
“There is what?”
“The place!”
“What place?”
“The place in my dream!
Look!”
“Please, Kim, forget about
your dream! You only
imagine this place is the
same! There are many
places like this in the
country.”
“No, Jan, its’ not my
imagination! This is the
place! There is the lane
with the hedge and white
fence! And look! There is
the little, white cottage
with green shutters!
Please, Jan, let me go out!”
Janet stops the car and turns to her friend. “Please don’t go up there.
Kim! It’s not a good idea! Let’s go on!”
“No, Jan! Let me go! I have to go and see!”
Kimberly opens the door of the car and gets out. First, she stands on the
road, just as she always does in the dream. Then she walks slowly up the
lane with the hedge and white fence on both sides. Her heart pounds
when she finally stands in front of the little, whit cottage. Everything
looks exactly the same, except for a sign in front of the hose which says
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 175
FOR SALE.
Kim goes to the door of the house and knocks. Her hands tremble as
she waits. In a minute the door opens. And there in the doorway stands
a little, old man with white hair and a white beard! The same as in her
dream! Her whole body shakes.
When the old man sees Kim, his eyes open wide, and he immediately
closes the door.
“Oh, don’t close the door!” cries Kim. “Please! I have to talk to you.”
The man opens the door a little and looks at her. “What do you want
here?” he asks. “Why don’t you go away?”
Kim doesn’t know what to say. But she does want to talk to him. “ I–I
see–I see that this house is for sale,” she stammers.
“Yes it is. But I am sure you don’t want to buy it!”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because–uh–because a ghost haunts this house.”
“A ghost haunts this pretty, little house?”
“Yes, it comes almost every night now.”
Kim tries hard to think of something to say. “Do–uh–do you know who
the ghost is? She stammers.
“Yes, I do now.”
“Who is it?”
In a loud whisper he exclaims, “It’s you!” Then he closes the door.

DreAMs
Dreams are very different from waking
life, but it is extremely difficult to define
in what the difference exists. When we
are dreaming, we are nearly always
convinced that we are awake, and in
some cases real experiences have been
mistaken for dreams.
The latter mistake forms the subject of
a celebrated Spanish play called Life a
Dream, and of an amusing story in the
Arabian Nights, in which a poor man is
for a jest treated as a mighty monarch,
and it is contrived that he should
afterwards think that all the honourable
treatment he had actually received was
merely a vivid dream.
Sometimes even after waking, we may be doubtful whether our dream
was a reality or not, especially if we happen to fall asleep in our chair and
do not remember the circumstance of having fallen to sleep. Of course
this doubt can only arise when there has been nothing in our dream that
seems impossible to our wakened mind.
It is, however, only in rare cases that a dream exactly copies the experience
of our waking hours. As a rule, in our sleep all kinds of events seem to
happen which, in our waking hours we should know to be impossible. In
188 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
our dreams we see and
con¬verse with friends
who are at the other
side of the world or have
been long dead. We may
even meet historical or
fictitious char¬acters
that we have read about
in books. We often lose
our identity and dream
that we are someone
else, and in the course of
a single dream may be
in turn several different
persons. Space and
time to the dreamer
lose their reality.
It is possible in a dream
that lasts a few seconds
to appear to have gone through the experience of many years. The
limitations of space may also vanish into nothing, so that we seem to
travel the most distant parts of the universe with the rapidity of thought.
Our imagination gains in some cases such complete control over our
reason that we can contemplate all such contradictions to our ordinary
experience without the least feeling of wonder. But this is not always the
case. It is impossible to assert as a universal rule that in a dream nothing,
however extraordinary, can surprise us.
Sometimes dreamers do have feeling of wonder at their strange
Dolphin English Reader Book 6 189
experiences. Nor can we say that the moral reason loses all control in
our sleep.
It does indeed sometimes happen that good men in their dreams seem to
do without the slightest compunction, horribly wicked deeds, but, on the
other hand, even the dreamer sometimes hears the voice of conscience.
The origin of dreams may in many cases be traced to internal or external
causes. Nightmare is frequently due to indigestion or ill-health.
When a dream is connected with an external cause, it is often possible
to trace some resemblance between the cause and the effect, although
our imagination erects a great dream fabric on a very small foundation.
Instances are quoted of a dreamer who dreamt that he was wandering
through regions of polar ice and woke up to find that he had kicked off
his bed¬clothes; and of another who, going to sleep with a hot bottle at
his feet, dream that he was walking over the crater of a volcano.
The sound of a whistle heard at the moment of waking may make us
dream of a long-continued struggle to catch a railway train on the point
of starting.
In other cases a dream originates in something that the dreamer saw or
was thinking about just before sleep came upon him. Coleridge once fell
asleep in his chair after reading how Kublai Khan ordered a palace to be
made. The idea worked upon his imagination, and the consequence was
that he composed a fine poem in his sleep.
When he woke up, he remembered perfectly the lines that had presented
themselves to his mind in the form of a dream, and he immediately began
to write them down. Unfortunately he was interrupted in the middle of
his task by a visitor, after whose departure he could remember no more,
190 Dolphin English Reader Book 6
so that the poem is only a fragment.
Not only the imagination but also the reason has been known to do good
work in dreams. There are instances of mathemati¬cians solving in their
sleep problems that they had vainly puzzled over when awake.
All the fact that we have been considering are so various that they chiefly
illustrate the extreme difficulty of making any general statement about
dreams.
They show that in many cases dream- life is very different from real life,
and that in other cases mind of a sleeping man works much in the same
way as if he was awake.
Perhaps the only definite general statement that can be made on the
subject is that imagination even in sleep cannot originate anything,
although it has an almost unlimited power of uniting together in more or
less unusual or even in impossible combinations what we have actually
experienced.
