Preface
Dolphin English Reader is an interactive multi-skill English course book designed
for the basic level students (grade 1-8) who are learning English as a foreign
or second language. It’s an integrated learner-friendly course that compiles
all the four skills of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing in a
selective and graded manner. The course aims at preparing the learners for
communicative challenges in real life and thus developing them into efficient
communicators in the changed arena of global communication.
The fundamental principle of modern day learning is “Learning must be fun.”
For the very purpose the classroom environment and the selected activities
of the textbook must be inclusive, participatory and entertaining to all the
learners. Dolphin English Reader carefully considers this principle and has ten
sections in each unit (except 8 with purpose in grade one and 9 in two and
three) to ensure that the selected activities address the varied intelligence,
interest, motivation and reinforcement of the learners. Latest concepts in
English Language Teaching (ELT) like: critical analysis, task-based approach
and interactive classroom are fairly adapted by the course.
The lessons selected for the course are of diverse types. Some of them are
borrowed in their original form and some are simplified versions of texts written
by famous writers as per the grade and maturity level of the learners. Some
lessons are purely original as they have been created by the author. The texts
include all genres of language and literature: stories, poems, essays, one act
plays, reports, speeches, diary entries, biographies, travelogues, letters and
notices, covering themes across the curriculum. The lessons and activities are
taken from almost all areas of knowledge like literature, geography, history,
nature, science and technology, mathematics, anthropology, economics,
entertainment and more.
Dolphin English Reader is loosely based on the curriculum prepared by
Curriculum Development Centre, Nepal. The author’s researches on Child
Psychology and ELT during the fifteen-year-long experience as a teacher have
a crucial influence on the selection of lessons and activities. Author’s frequent
interactions with educationists, parents and teachers have also contributed a
lot in the framing and sketching of this course book.
I acknowledge my sincere gratitude to the entire family of Guinness Publications,
Kathmandu, Nepal. My school teachers, professors, colleagues in the
profession and students who are the greatest sources of my learning deserve
my decent respect. I am thankful to Mr. Ishwor Poudel for his review. I’m
indebted to Mr. Ram Bahadur Mochi for the most productive tips I’ve received.
The authors and writers whose creations have been used in the course are
above the line of respect.
I would humbly accept the suggestions of experts and the other concerned for
the betterment of this course book. I believe that this book will be inclusive and
entertaining enough for teaching and learning English in the classroom.

Bed in Summer
In winter I get up at night,
And dress by yellow candle light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day,
To go to bed by day,
To go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still chirping on the tree,
Or hear the grown up people’s feet
Still singing past me in the street,
Past me in the street,
Past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

9. Read the story given and do the activities.
HoSpital WindoW
Two men, both seriously ill, were in the same hospital room.
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each
afternoon to help drain out the fluid from his lungs. His bed was
next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all
his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They
spoke of their families, homes, jobs and vacation.
Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could
sit up, he could pass the time by describing to his roommate all
the things he could see outside the window.
12 Dolphin English Reader book 4
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour
periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by
all the activity and colour of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and
swans played on the water while children sailed their model
boats. There were beautiful flowers of many colours and a fine
view of city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man
on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine
the beautiful scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade
passing by. Although the other man couldn’t hear the band – he
could see it by his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window
portrayed it with descriptive words.
After a few days, the man by the window passed away. When
the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths, she found the
lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully
in his sleep. She was sad and called the hospital attendants to
take the dead body away.
As soon as it seemed good, the other man asked if he could be
moved to the bed by the window and the nurse was happy to
make the switch.
Dolphin English Reader book 4 13
The man wanted to see the beautiful scene of the park and city
skyline through the window. It was a shock. What he could see
was just a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his
deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things
outside the window.
The nurse replied that the man was blind and could not even
see the wall.
She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

WHo KnoWS a mountain
Who knows a mountain?
One who has gone
To worship its beauty
In the dawn;
One who has slept
On its breast at night;
One who has measured
His strength to its height;
One who has followed
Its longest trail.
And laughed in the face
Of its fiercest gale;
Has scaled its peaks,
And has trod
Its cloud-swept summits
Alone with God.

King midaS and tHe golden toucH
Many years ago there lived a king named Midas. He had a
beautiful little daughter, whose name was Marigold. King
Midas was very rich. He had more gold than any other king in
the world. One room of his great castle was almost filled with
yellow pieces of gold.
The king grew so fond of his gold that he loved it more than
anything else in the entire world. He even loved it better than
his own daughter, dear little rosy-cheeked Marigold. His one
great wish seemed to be for more and more gold.
One day while he was in his gold room, a beautiful fairy stood
before him. The boy’s face shone with a wonderful light, and
he had wings on his cap and wings on his feet. In his hand he
carried a strange-looking wand, and the wand also had wings.
“Midas, you are the richest man in the world,” said the fairy.

“There is no king who has so much gold as you.” “May be,” said
the king. “As you see, I have a room-full gold but I want it more;
for gold is the best and the most wonderful thing in the world.”
“Are you sure?” asked the fairy.
“I’m very sure,” answered the king.
“If I should grant you a wish,” said the fairy “would you ask for
more gold?”
“If I could have but one wish,” said the king, “I would ask that
everything I touch should turn to beautiful yellow gold.”
“Your wish shall be granted,” said the fairy. “At sunrise tomorrow
morning your slightest touch will turn everything into gold.
But I warn you that your gift will not make you happy.”
“I’ll take the risk,” said the king.

The next day King Midas woke up very early. He was eager to
see if the fairy’s promise had come true. As soon as the sun
rose he tried the gift by touching his bed slightly with his hand.
The bed turned to gold. The king was wild with joy. He went
on touching things and they instantly turned to gold.
Now the king was hungry and went down to have his breakfast.
Then a strange thing happened there. When he raised a glass
of water to drink, it became solid gold. Not a drop of water
passed his lips. The bread and meat turned to gold under his
fingers. Not a thing could he get to eat. All was gold, gold, gold.
His little daughter, the dearest to him came running in from
the garden. He touched her
with his lips. At once the
little girl was changed to a
golden statue.
A great fear crept into the
king’s heart, sweeping all
the joy out of his life. In
grief he called and called
upon the fairy who had
given him the gift of the
golden touch.
“Oh fairy,” he begged, “take
away this horrible golden
36 Dolphin English Reader book 4
gift! Take all my land. Take all my gold. Take everything, only
give me back my little daughter.”
In a moment the beautiful fairy was standing before him. “Do
you still think that gold is the greatest thing in the world?”
asked the fairy.
“No! no!” cried the king. “I hate the very sight of the yellow
stuff.”
“Are you sure that you no longer wish the golden touch?” asked
the fairy.
“I’ve learned my lesson,” said the king. “I no longer think gold
the greatest thing in the world.”
“Very well,” said the fairy. The fairy gave the king a pitcher full
of water and asked to sprinkle the water into everything that
turned to gold with his
touch.
The king did it and
was very happy to see
his daughter again. He
sprinkled the water
and brought everything
back to normal.
He felt a real new taste in the breakfast with his daughter
today.

46 Dolphin English Reader book 4
AD. It is a three storied

with beautiful lattice windows and turrets.
Janakpur was the capital of ancient Mithila kingdom. King
Janak, the most famous of the era had a daughter Janaki also
known as Sita who later married Ram, the king of Ayodhya.
The engagement of Ram and Sita had occurred in a nearby
temple after Ram broke the giant bow (shiva-Dhanus) that king
Janak used to worship. Hindus worship Ram and Sita as God
and Goddess. So Janakpur is a holy city and Janaki Temple is a
pilgrimage for Hindu devotees.
Every year, thousands
of pilgrims visit Janaki
Temple. The pilgrims
are from Nepal, India,
Sri Lanka and a few from
