2 Reading Time

Read the poem and do the activities.

tHe rainy day

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart and cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje,

Macedonia on August 27, 1910 as

Agnes Gonsha Bojaxhiu. She was the

last of three children born to Nicola

and Dranafile Bojaxhiu. She attended

a public school in Skopje and was

interested in religion from the school

time. By the age of twelve she had felt

that she needed to help the poor.

When she was eighteen, Mother Teresa

left home to join a group of Irish nuns who had a religious mission

in India. She, then came to India and worked as the teacher

of a Christian School in

Kolkata. In Kolkata she saw

many poor, unschooled

children and orphans. She

left her job as the principal

of a school and started

to collect and teach the

unschooled children and

orphans.

62 Dolphin English Reader book 4

She opened and ran many schools in Kolkata. She also conducted

many homes for parentless and homeless children. She worked

with the lepers who were not liked in the society then. Her work

and fame grew bigger and bigger. By 1979 Mother Teresa had

expanded her work to more than twenty five countries in the

world. She was recognized and helped by many people.

Mother Teresa did not marry. She did

not enjoy a rich life. She was always

happy to serve the needy people. This

owned her a great respect worldwide.

She was awarded the most reputed

Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was

also honoured with the Pope John

Peace Prize.

In the 1980s and 1990s Mother Teresa

suffered from poor health. She had a heart attack twice in 1983

and 1989. But she didn’t stop working. By 1990, her work had

reached more than thirty countries. In March 1997 she selected

Sister Nirmala, a nun from Nepal to look after her work. In

August 1997 she celebrated her eighty seventh birthday and

short after that she had a heart attack again. This time the cruel

heart attack took her. She died on September 5, 1997. The whole

platypuS playS tricKS

Before the dawn of time, all the animals looked the same.
Normally this was fine, but some of the cheekier animals liked to

play tricks on Mother Earth and pretended to be other animals.

Since they looked exactly the same, even Mother Earth who

had created them could not tell the difference. In order to fix
this problem, she decided to make each different animal look

different, so they couldn’t swap identities.

Now, there were some animals who liked flying through the

air, or climbing trees more than anything, but not Platypus. He
liked swimming.

66 Dolphin English Reader book 4

At the time Mother Earth sent out her message that she was

going to change what everyone looked like. Platypus was under

the water, playing with his friend Fish.

Platypus stayed in the water even after Fish had gone out, and

since sound doesn’t travel that well under water, platypus didn’t

get to hear Mother Earth’s message. It was only when Fish came

back looking like a beautiful river fish, with his scales gleaming,

that Platypus knew about the message.

He left immediately for Mother Earth’s home so that he could

look different. But by the time he got there, there was only

Dolphin English Reader book 4 67

leftovers left. Platypus so wanted to be like everyone else, that

he took the leftovers.

He ended up with a beaver’s tail, a duck’s bill and flippers, and

a bear’s fur and claws at the end of the flippers.

When he got back to the lake to show his friends, they all just

laughed at him.

Platypus was so embarrassed that he went and dug a hole in

the ground near the river bank to live in.

After a while Fish came along and apologized.

They became friends again, and Platypus even made another

opening to his home underwater just for Fish to come and visit.

2 Reading Time

Read the passage and do the activities.
BaSKetBall

Have you played basketball

or seen people playing it? It

is one of the most popular

sports in the world. It is a

team game with five players

in each team. It is played

in a rectangular court. The

objective of the game is to shoot a ball through a hoop mounted

to a backboard at each end.

82 Dolphin English Reader book 4

Players in basketball try to shoot for the team and the opponents

try to block. In their process of scoring, they carry out a number

of skills. They pass, block, dribble and shoot the ball. The ball

can be advanced in the court by passing it to a teammate or

bouncing it while walking or running. One can’t lift or drag the

ball.

There is a scoring line at each

end called the three-point line. If

the player shoots the ball behind

the three-point line the shooting

team scores three points but if the

shooting is done from in front of

the line the score is two. If a player

commits a foul, the opposition

team is given two free throws.

The opposition players can’t block or disturb the free throws.

The score from the free throw is counted one. At last the team

with the highest score wins the game. Scores are usually very

big. A hundred plus score is common in a high level game.

Stranger in tHe orcHard

Rim Thakali was a farmer in Marpha, a village in Mustang

district of Nepal. He had a big apple orchard. He had planted a

large number of apple trees and cared them till they bore fruits.

Now the trees were full of ripe apples and he wanted to sell the

fruit in the market to make money.

One fine day, while picking the fruit with his son, Rim saw a

stranger sitting on the branch of a tree and picking fruits. Rim

Dolphin English Reader book 4 99

was angry to see this. “Hey

you! What are you doing on my

tree? Aren’t you ashamed of

stealing?” Rim shouted.

The stranger sitting on the

branch looked at Rim but

didn’t reply and continued

picking the fruits. Rim was

now mad with anger. He

shouted, “For the whole year I

have taken care of these trees.

You have no right to take the

fruits without my permission. So come down at once!”

The stranger answered, “Why should I come down? This is the

garden of God and I am the servant of God. So I have the right to

pick these fruits. You should not interfere with the work of God

and his servant.”

Rim was very surprised at this answer and thought of a plan.

He requested the stranger to come down from the tree. As the

stranger climbed down the tree, Rim with the help of his son

tied him to the tree and began beating him with a stick. The

stranger began to scream. “Why are you beating me? You have

no right to do this,” said the stranger.
