Rim didn’t care and continued
beating him. The stranger
screamed, “Don’t you fear God?
You are beating an innocent
man.” Rim answered, “Why
should I fear? This stick in my
hand belongs to God and I am
the servant of God. You should
not interfere with the work of
God and his servant.”
The stranger hesitated and spoke,
“Wait. Please don’t beat me. I am sorry for picking the fruits.
This is your garden and I should seek your permission before
entering into it. So, forgive me and set me free.” Rim smiled and
said, “Don’t use God’s name to justify your ill deeds.” And set
the stranger free.

alligator alley
At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary on that Tuesday
evening In Belvar. The local bowling alley was packed for the
th
26 Annual Belvar Bowling Championship.
“Okay, this is the last call. Is there anyone else who want to
register for the tournament before we get underway?” asked
the mayor.
Dolphin English Reader book 4 115
The crowd was silent.
“Well, let’s get landed in,” the mayor said. The bowling alley
erupted in cheers but then a deep, husky voice said, “Wait,
count me in.”
At that moment, terror engulfed the entire bowling alley. Parents
reached for their children, and bowers braced the worst.
The mayor who was now on
wobbly knees said, “Ple....
Ple...Please leave, sir. We
don’t want any trouble.
“Relax, I’m not going to
hurt anybody,” declared
the alligator wearing
sunglasses. “Look, I’m just
here for the tournament.
May I please play?” the
alligator said and took off
his sunglasses.
“You bowl?” asked a frightened old lady from the crowd.
“Whenever I get the chance,” said the alligator. “But as you can
imagine, there are very few opportunities for me to do so. I read
116 Dolphin English Reader book 4
about the tournament and would really like to be a part of it.
The mayor who had finally collected his breath said, “Well, if you
behave and promise that you’re just here for the tournament,
then I don’t see any problem with you participating.”
“I give you my word,” said the alligator. “After the tournament is
over, I’ll leave as I came, in peace.”
“Are there any objections?” asked the mayor to the other
bowlers.
None of the bowlers said a word. Why would they? Who would
take a chance of upsetting an alligator?
“Very well then,” said the mayor. Let the tournament begin. After
the alligator thanked the mayor for allowing him to participate,
he headed for the shoe racks. Everyone in the bowling alley was
watching his every move.
“What is your name?” asked a little girl hidden behind her
mother. “Al, my name is Al,” replied the alligator.
Al set his bowling bowl bag atop the shoe counter. After paying
his entry fee and realizing there weren’t any shoe of his size, Al
walked back towards the lanes to prepare to play. The rest of
the bowlers were still watching him.
Dolphin English Reader book 4 117
“Well, come on. Are we going to bowl or not?” asked the mayor.
One by one the bowlers began throwing the practice balls. Bosco
Wilson, who had won the tournament for five consecutive years,
provoked Al saying him a horrible bowler.
“Okay, let’s bowl!” said the mayor. And so they did.
The total scores after three
games would determine
the overall champion of
the tournament.
Since Bosco won the first
tournament before five
years, nobody had even
finished a close second.
The tight match made the
crowd excited.
It wasn’t that the crowd
was rooting for Al, as much as they were rooting against Bosco.
As the third and final game was about to begin, Bosco, concerned
about Al’s strong performance snuck up behind Al and poured
water on the floor behind him.
When Al turned around he slipped and fell face-first. In the fall,
118 Dolphin English Reader book 4
Al hurt both of his hands. The crowd was silent as Al grimaced
in pain.
“You should learn to be more careful, gator, said Bosco.
“Bosco, you behave yourself, or I’ll have you thrown out of this
tournament,” said the mayor.
“I just want to make sure he’s alright,” Said Bosco sarcastically.
The mayor asked Al if he could continue. Al told the mayor
he would finish the tournament, but said that his hands were
hurting too much to use.
Puzzled by Al’s remark, the mayor asked, “How on earth can
you play then?”
Al whispered something in the mayor’s ear, which caused him
to laugh out loud. “I see,” said the mayor. “Very well then let’s
finish the tournament.
As the final game was about to begin, a voice from the crowd
shouted, “You can do it Al, you can beat him.” The same little
girl who had asked Al his name was the one rooting him on. Al
smiled at the little girl and then picked up his bowling ball –
with his tail!
“What is he doing?” asked Bosco aloud.
Dolphin English Reader book 4 119
And then to the amazement of everyone, Al sprinted toward the
lane with his bowling ball dangling from his tail. He released
the ball and threw a perfect strike.
Nobody could believe it. Bosco was outraged with it but the
mayor informed him there were no rules stating one couldn’t
use a tail to throw their bowling ball.
The final game wasn’t even close. Al easily beat Bosco and was
declared the winner.
Suddenly from the crowd a loud voice pleaded Al to have her
picture taken with him. It was the same girl who had asked his
name and rooted him.
Al was happy to do so. The picture was taken and hanged on the
wall of the alley.
After the day, Al has neither been seen nor met. The people of
Belvar remembered him for long.
Whenever a visitor in town doubts the legend, they are always
directed to a hall inside Belvar’s bowling alley. The hall is
nicknamed Alligator Alley, and it’s filled with trophies bearing
the name of each winner of the Belvar Bowling Championship.
There is also a picture hanging in the centre of the hall that
always seems to grab people’s attention.

Sheriff strapped on his gun, ran to the car and drove to the
station. On the way, his deputy called on the radio, “Sheriff,
five kids tried to play in what they thought was snow and
disappeared in the stuff.

Sheriff sped to the scene, and when he got there, he found several
men trying to chop into the stuff, but they couldn’t make a dent.
Frank Jones picked some up with his shovel but it just dribbled
off. “On the ground, it’s solid. Off the ground, it’s oozing slime,”
Frank said, “This is beyond weird.”
“We gotta get into the pile of whatever it is and find those kids,
but how?” Sheriff said.
“Dynamite”, Hary said.
“If we use dynamites, we would kill the kids, but what else do we
have that will put a dent in that thing? Okay, let’s use dynamite,”
Sheriff said.
“I’ve some,” Hary said and ran off.
“While we wait for him, let’s get a closer look at this stuff,”
Sheriff said and poked a pile. Frank poked a different pile with
a shovel.

As Sheriff jabbed at the mass with his night stick, he heard a
scream and saw Frank disappear into the pile. A few minutes
later, carrying the dynamite Hary ran toward Sheriff. As he
neared him, he was suckled into a pile of the substance and
disappeared. “What the hell is happening?” Sheriff yelled angrily
as he looked all around at the white mystery that covered his
town. “There has to be an explanation,” he said and poked the
white mystery with his night stick. As he poked the white stuff,
the mass of white began to vibrate and after a while, huge piles

split off and moved to different directions. One pile moved
towards Sheriff, rolled over him and sucked him into it as it
went forward.
After all the people in the town were eaten, the separate piles
came together, and enormous mass of white invaders floated
into the air and streaked off toward the next town.

8 Fun Time
8.1. Read the following speech given by a grade four student
of Delhi Public School.
trying iS Better tHan crying
As children, we have to always
understand that life is full of
ups and downs. Throughout
our life, we will be faced
with many disappointments.
Success and disappoints are
just two sides of the same coin.
Therefore we should never allow
disappointments to win over us.
Thinking and crying over failures does not only offer any
solutions but also elevate the original issues making it
more difficult to resolve. For example, an unexpected low
score in an examination is just a reminder that we should
work harder next time. It is just an opportunity for you
to show the world that you are up for it. Face it with your
heads up, try harder and prove to the world that you are a
true champion. Whereas, if you start worrying about it, it
will affect your confidence, making you weaker. So when
your hopes and dreams and goals are dashed, search
among the wreckage and try harder, you may find a golden

opportunity hidden in the ruins. Trying is always better
than crying.
