This page of the magazine is normally reserved for a greeting from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Unfortunately, his schedule got a little too busy this year!

His image onscreen every morning has provided comfort and a sense of stability in these very un-
stable and ever-evolving circumstances. His role as leader and the leadership of many of the other
politicians and government officials we are watching daily help to underline the fact that we are all
in this together and for the first time in a long time, make us feel like we are all on the same team.
We are proud of our leaders and more than ever, proud to be Canadian!

Outline of the Competition

Online registrations which are received after the close
of auditions each season, are kept on file and in August,
registrants are contacted and invited to attend the
Audition and Orientation nights where we do our very
best to present each of the participants with a full de-
scription of what to expect throughout the 8 month sea-
son of the contest. For season 14, the first of those events
was held on Sunday, September 8th at Casa do Alentejo
with a second held on Wednesday, September 25th.
Additional hopefuls were seen by appointment. Judges
for this season’s auditions included John, Lisa, Trevor
Shelton, Andy Melo, Anthony Wright, Marisa Oliveira
and Valter Barberini. Juveniles and 6 Adults moved through in the 4th & 5th
rounds. Unless they had qualified during their first per-
formances, everyone in the contest had been offered at
least two attempts to qualify to the semifinal rounds. The
semifinals were an impressive showcase of talent. After
the two rounds and some difficult decision making on the
part of the audiences and judges, the 10 finalists were
ultimately chosen. Unfortunately, shortly after the com-
pilation CD was recorded, the remainder of the Season 14
calendar was put on hold due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Those who passed the auditions were scheduled for
song selection and keys. As usual, each potential contest-
ant had to narrow down their approved choices to a pair
of songs, 1 fast and 1 slow, to compete with throughout
the entire competition. Then we had to decide on the
appropriate key for their vocal range. The contestants are
split between two age groups, Juveniles and Adults. The
Juvenile category consists of children up to the age of 15
at the time of auditions. Contestants age 16 and up are As soon as we can confirm a new date for the Final, we

Contestant Mia Baron is shown during an interview with
GoLive TV. This is an example of how the interview seg-
ments in our events can actually benefit the contestants.
There are also a lot of interviews during the breaks. Here Learning to be comfortable with chit-chat on TV (and
John is being interviewed for FPTV. radio) is very important when promoting musical projects.

As we usually do in the later
rounds, we threw a little twist into
the numbers and decided to move
6 contestants on to the semifinals.
In the Adult category, (l-r) Justine
Fong, Janiah Hines Brown and
Alessia Scanga all moved on to the
Semis and in the Juvenile category,
Isabela Antunes, Loren Aronov and

dinners at Swiss Chalet, courtesy

round, they all had the oppor-

fine “merch”, including frisbees!

The 5th Qualifying round always brings mixed feelings. We get
to find out who the next semifinalists are but it is also the last
time that we will see most of the contestants… at least until
next season starts up! Because our contest focuses on the in-
dividual development of the contestants, they are welcome to
come back again to gain more experience.
Following the same twist as we had in the 4th
round, 3 Juveniles were chosen to join the final
group of Semifinalists. They were Abigail Murphy,
Cassie Acevedo & Ishaan Grotra.

Three Adults were also chosen to join
the final group of Semifinalists. They
were Sarah McLennan, Crystal Jones
