The Coaching
Every Wednesday night during the qualifying rounds, contest-
ants come into SCJS Studios at Casa do Alentejo to rehearse their
songs. We provide contestants with the expertise of a professional
vocal coach who has been a part of the contest since Day 1, Lisa
Santos. The contestants have the opportunity to benefit from the
different perspectives and coaching styles Lisa has been witness to
over the years.
Influenced by theory from the Royal Conservatory to Vocology
to personal experience gained from more than 35 years as a pro-
fessional vocalist, Lisa helps contestants tweak their performances
for the audiences and judging panels whose expectations she has
become intimately familiar with. John also gives his own valuable
input, giving contestants a more complete picture of what is need-
ed to polish their vocal and stage performances in order to really
shine onstage. The hope is to provide each contestant with tools
and techniques which they will still be using well beyond their time
with the contest.

For the 8th year in a row, we have had the pleasure of
holding each and every one of the qualifying rounds at
Casa do Alentejo Community Centre. Casa do Alentejo is
an organization dedicated to the Portuguese community
in Toronto. Through various cultural and social activities,
they help Portuguese immigrants and their Canadian
families maintain links to their cultural heritage. They re-
cently celebrated their 37th anniversary.

other things, it’s wine, it’s cork industry (goes well with
wine) and it’s music. In trying to keep their traditions

Group Event Weekend
On the weekend of March 20-22, we were scheduled to
hold our annual “Group Event Weekend”. On the Friday
night, we would gather to rehearse the group song for
the Final; on Saturday, the Finalists would share a limo
ride to Swiss Chalet at Keele & St. Clair where they would
share a meal, courtesy of Joe & Andrew Amorim; on
Saturday afternoon, we were to hold a workshop where
professionals in the music industry would share some tips
of the trade including how to get a job within the indus-
try, what to expect in a recording session, how to develop
as a songwriter, and much more. Of course, that was all
scheduled well before COVID-19 changed our world.
Upon entering the studio, they had to apply sanitizer and
they were asked not to touch anything. The headphones
were sanitized between sessions and any surfaces that
may have been touched were wiped down with disinfect-
ant. Masks were available if necessary. After their record-
ing session was over, each Finalist would head next door
for a brief video shoot and interview. Clips from each
Finalist’s shoot are to be presented at the Final and will
be available for viewing later on SCJS TV at the YouTube
channel TheSingingContest1.

make the studio safe because every year, each of the

The Finalists In The Studio
Every year, each of the Finalists
gets to record a song for a compil-
ation CD. For many of them, it is
their first time inside a recording
studio. The Finalists’ CD was re-
corded in our own SCJS Studios.
Each finalist sang the 2 songs they
will be performing at the final.
Only one of the songs will be used
on the CD but at the Final, both
songs will be used in order to re-
cap the performances just before
voting begins.
Once John had dumped the tracks from the key-
board, Tal Vaisman recorded the vocals, engineered and
mastered the 22 recordings with assistance from Zack
Weinstein, a student in our affiliated educational pro-
gram Back on Track. Between the recording sessions,
there were promo shoots where the Finalists were filmed,
photographed and interviewed. Clips from each Finalist’s
shoot will be presented at the Final and will be available
for viewing later on SCJS TV at the YouTube channel

Final 2019
The Season 13 Grand Finale was held once again at
the beautiful Pearson Convention Center. At Pearson,
we have plenty of room to set up a fabulous stage. We
also have a spacious area at the back of the hall where
our guests can mingle before dinner or stretch their legs
while votes are being cast. They could even take a look
at a couple of the latest models from West Toronto Kia!

where they could find the compilation CD.
Last season’s CDs were being given away to
anyone who made a minimum donation of
$15 to the Luso Canadian Charitable Society,

Most of the crew brought in for video had worked with us throughout the season, under the guidance of Eddie Vallejo
Heredia. However, sound & lights at the Finale were taken care of by TNT Productions, headed by Tony DaSilva.

Heartfelt thanks also go out to the friendly faces who The Finalists had a meet & greet with the audience as
welcomed the evening’s guests into the event. they sat at the “Wall of Fame” to autograph magazines
and CDs.
While the results were being tabulated and the prizes prepared for
the winners, the entertainment continued with performances from
previous winners of the contest. Bruna Vilaça, Juvenile winner of
Season 10, returned to perform one of the songs from the album she
won and to discuss her experience recording for the international hit
TV show The Next Step. She closed off with an a cappella version of
a fado which is an emotionally intense type of song from Portugal.
