The Season 13 Grand Finale of the ‘Singing Contest with John Santos’
Dated April 27, 2019
Dear Friends,
Greetings to everyone attending the Season 13 Grand Finale of the Long & McQuade Musical
Instruments Singing Contest with John Santos.
As a Portuguese-Canadian, this contest is always an opportunity to celebrate my heritage and
culture with others in my community. It also gives a chance for me to look back and relect on the
rich cuture, history, traditions and people that have helped me shape my identity.
I truly appreciate that your contest encourages participants to share their love for music by
singing in any language of their choice. As the Member of Parliament for Mississauga
East-Cooksville, I am so proud to live in a country that values the diversity of its citizens, and
respects their right to celebrate the heritage and traditions they have brought with them.
On behalf of the Federal Government of Canada, I want to wish everyone the very best for the event
and express my gratitude to John and Lisa Santos, for their continued dedication in supporting our
Portuguese community in Canada through collaboration, preservation of our heritage, and the
encouragement of cross-cultural interaction.
Wish you many more years of continued success!

children up to the age of 15 at the time of auditions.
Contestants age 16 and up are placed in the Adult cat-
egory. Contestants were divided into 3 groups based
mainly on their date of registration.
At the first qualifying round, 2 Juveniles and 2 Adults
were chosen to move on to the semifinals. At the 3rd
round, 3 contestants from each category moved on. The
remaining contestants, along with some new contest-
ants, were scheduled to return in either the 4th, 5th or
both rounds. Because the 4th & 5th rounds are the last
opportunities for these contestants to reach the semis,
it has become our habit to add some kind of a twist to
these last rounds. We usually end up choosing 3 contest-
ants from each category to move on in each round, either
basing the extra choices on the number of votes or pre-
senting the judges with the opportunity to save someone
they feel deserves a spot in the semifinals. This season, 5
Juveniles and 7 Adults moved through in the 4th & 5th
rounds.
