Group Event Weekend

On the weekend of March 22-24, we
held our Group Event Weekend. On Friday
evening, we all met in the studio to decide
who should sing what in the group song
for the Final. The Finalists had already been
sent the song and lyrics so it didn’t take
long to decide whose vocal range was best
suited for each part. After running through
the song several times we felt that every-
one was confident with their part. After
reviewing a few details about the Final, it
was time to head home.

The next afternoon everyone returned to the studio to wait for the limo which would be taking them to a late lunch at
the Keele & St. Clair Swiss Chalet.

Group Event Weekend

After returning to the Studio, we had Trevor Shelton

deliver an introduction to the music industry. Among
other things, he encouraged everyone to try their hand
at songwriting, saying that’s where the real money is. He
also advised them that taking an over-produced song to
a record company was at best a waste of energy and at
worst just a bad idea. The more stripped down a new
song is, the easier it can be for the A & R people to see all
of the possibilities for a song and the many directions it
could take in the production room.

Tal Vaisman was up next. He spoke about his own

writing experiences including trips down to Nashville, be-
ing holed up in a room with a group of strangers for the
sole purpose of co-writing some killer songs. He spoke of
the different roles people can take in the writing process.
He also discussed different variations of song structure
and how the tried and true verse/chorus/verse/chorus/
chorus pattern was evolving.

The Finalists In The Studio

Every year, each of the Finalists
gets to record a song for a compil-
ation CD. For many of them, it is
their first time inside a recording
studio. The Finalists’ CD was re-
corded in our own SCJS Studios.
Each finalist sang the 2 songs they
will be performing at the final.
Only one of the songs will be used
on the CD but at the Final, both
songs will be used in order to re-
cap the performances just before
voting begins.

Once John had dumped the
tracks from the keyboard, Tal Vaisman recorded the
vocals, engineered and mastered the 22 recordings with
assistance from Zack Weinstein, a student in our affiliated
educational program Back on Track. Between the record-
ing sessions, there were promo shoots where the Finalists
were filmed, photographed and interviewed. Clips from
each Finalist’s shoot will be presented at the Final and will
be available for viewing later on SCJS TV at the YouTube
channel TheSingingContest1.

Final 2018

The Grand Finale for Season 12 was held on April 21 of
last year at Pearson Convention Center. As with this sea-
son, we returned to Pearson because the venue has every-
thing we need, the people are great to work with and
the quality of their food and service has been impeccable.

First and foremost, the Grand Finale celebrates the
achievements of the Finalists and the fact that, after more
than 8 months of gathering, developing and showcasing
new talent, they are the ones who were able to rise to the
top. However, it is also a chance to express our gratitude
to the sponsors whose support for the contest is crucial
for it to happen at all. We are very happy when our busy
sponsors have the opportunity to come and witness the
contest in action, especially when it’s the Final. Here are
some of the sponsors and their representatives who made
it out to the Season 12 Grand Finale:
