A case study and critical analysis of how religiosity and cultural background influence the same-sex attracted Muslim women (SSAMW) into the expression of their sexual identity. Najah Haziqah Amin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Recently, there are people who claimed to practice Islam as well as identifying themselves as an individual with same-sex attraction. This ‘intersection’ of Islamic faith and sexual orientation has sparked discussions in society on its compatibility and potential tensions between the two. It raises a question within the community on the possibility of either reconciling the contradictory identities or prioritizing one over the other. The growing presence of these individuals in our Muslim community highlighted the urgent necessity for comprehensive engagement and intervention from the religious, educational, and scientific dimensions. However, there are little to no study has been done to fully explore this conflict, especially focusing on the same-sex attracted Muslim women (SSAMW) compared to other members of the LGBTQ+ community. Therefore, the presenter aims to bring light to this discourse by conducting a study qualitative in nature that will involve library research and field research. The amount of sample targeted is five to ten individuals SSAMW who have these two criteria on them by using the probability sampling method and snowball sampling method. This study will be held in a Muslimmajority country, Malaysia, to comprehensively explore the interplay between religiosity and cultural background and how these influence the SSAMW in the expression of their sexual identity. Hence, by conducting this research, a thorough exposure and deeper understanding could be gained to guide this community in reconciling their conflict and shedding light for society to have better knowledge on this issue.

A Probe into The Life of Shikh Muhyidhīn Abdul Qayyūm as An Influential Sufi Master in Kerala Kavungal Hanna Sherin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Sufism is being studied extensively in this period at academic and ordinary levels as well. One of the most read and researched globally is related to Sufism. The present research is an attempt to comprehensively explain the life of Sheikh Muhyidheen Abdul Qayyum (1936-2019), a Sufi scholar who lived in the southernmost state of India, Kerala, also known as Malabar. Taṣawuf has centuries of history and tradition in Malabar. Many Sufis and Sufi Ṭarīqas gained profound influence on the land as early as the twelfth century since the Indian Ocean paved the way for the arrival of Sufis to the Malabar coast. Its only active sequels have been in the early 20th century and beyond. A new dawn in this series came to Kerala through two Syrian Sufis, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Isa, and Sheikh Saad AdDeen Al-Murad in the form of Shadhili Tariqah, which was popularized by Sheikh Muhyidheen Abdul Qayoom. Thus, his life as a Sufi Master of this Tariqah is to be discussed in our present context where Sufism is severely misconceived. Sheikh’s life revealed that there is no Sufism without Shari'ah. This study delves into textual analysis of all available works on Sheikh’s life such as his biographical books, papers, and other relevant documents on the topic. It seeks to discover the influence of Sheikh Muhyidheen and his Sufi concept, and how he succeeded in reviving the Prophetic tradition in this modern era. The findings of this study are significant in putting forth the interventions initiated by Sheikh as an excellent model of community engagement through Taṣawuf. Also, this research about Sheikh Muhyidheen serves as the first of its kind in English, which could provide an insight for those who intend to apprehend the concept of Sufism through the life of a Sufi Master.

Causes and Impacts of Feminism on Muslim Family: Causes and Impacts of Feminism on Muslim Family: A Maqasidic Appraisal Shaima Zohair Arab, Sayed Mohamed Mushin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Islam regards family as basic unit of society, protecting it with prescriptions and proscriptions. In the contemporary times, Muslim family encounters several challenges which can shake the foundation if not dealt with proper and effective strategies. One of the major challenges is feminism that disguised with brand of Islam, but poses threats to the core pillars of a Muslim family. The effects and far-reaching consequences are seen by now in various aspects and segments of Muslims across the globe, a fact that highlights the importance of studies on this topic. This study is an attempt to show the actuality of this movement by mentioning the arguments raised by the feminists on Muslim families. In addition, the study looks into Islamic juristic views which concern at the safety and flourishment of Muslim family and guides against the dangers of the this movement. This study adopts two methodologies: inductive method and analytical approach. The inductive approach is employed to collect data regarding the feminist movement, wisdom behind the values of Muslim family, and responses to the arguments from an Islamic jurisprudence perspective. Analytical method is used for investigating the causes and impacts of feminism on Muslim family and to suggest solutions based on Islamic principles and Muslim family values. Moreover, the findings show that feminism in the beginning fought for equal rights to vote and equal amount of salary compared to men. However, since it started involving with religious values such as the rise of Islamic feminism, it has affected the Muslim familial roles negatively. For instance, this movement argued for equality in guardianship and divorce. It questioned polygamy and raised voice against inheritance rules. These arguments contradict with the Islamic vision and jurisprudence of familial roles which are based on complementarity of two sexes in performing various roles.

Development and Implementation of Qur’anic Tadabbur Module for Deep Understanding of Islamic Aqidah Among Young Muslims in Malaysia Dr. Wan Mazwati Wan Yusoff, Dr. Abdul Shakour Preece, Juhasni Adila Juperi, Dr. Nadzrah Ahmad, Mashitah Zainol Abidin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Presently Muslims in Malaysia are facing a tremendous challenge in providing authentic understanding of Islamic knowledge as taught by Prophet Muhammad which affected the beliefs and moral behaviours of young Muslims. Not only they are influenced by Western ideologies such as naturalism, secularism, liberalism, and postmodernism but also by deviant teachings developed and propagated within the Muslim communities by ‘Muslims’. Studies reported the deviant teachings, among others, are Millah Ibrahim, Ilmu Syahadah dan Zikir Nafas Ismail bin Kassim, Raja Bomoh Sedunia, and Prophet Muhammad as Allah. The advancement in telecommunication technologies facilitates the confusion further since many young Muslims are not able to differentiate truth from falsehood. The impacts of the confusion on the authentic Islamic knowledge and aqidah are many but the most devastating impacts are shirk and deviant practices and behaviours. Studies have shown that young Muslims were bored and disengaged during the process of teaching and learning of Islamic education especially during teaching and learning aqidah. Prophet Muhammad taught his companions the Qur’an to get authentic knowledge of aqidah; and they would learn the Qur’an to practice. Thus, the best way to provide authentic understanding of Islamic teachings is through understanding of the Qur’an. A quick survey on the reasons why young Muslim read the Qur’an revealed that majority of them read the Qur’an to get reward from Allah, to protect them from stress, anxiety, and satan. This means that many young Muslims read the Qur’an not to contemplate of the meanings to get authentic knowledge. Hence, they should be taught to ponder on the Qur’anic verses using a method that is not only engaging and mind blowing but also could enhance their critical thinking, and collaboration skills. A review of literature revealed that philosophical inquiry method is effective in promoting classroom engagement and enhancing critical thinking, and collaboration skills. This study aims at developing and implementing module of tadabbur of some selected Qur’anic verses using philosophical inquiry method. The effectiveness of the module will be evaluated by the criteria of students’ engagement, critical thinking, and collaboration skills as well as their level of understanding of key concepts in Islamic aqidah which is indicated by several observable indicators. It will employ qualitative methods to collect and analyse data on the effectiveness of philosophical inquiry method to achieve the set objectives.

Fardhu ‘Ain Board Game as Supplementary Teaching Aid in Islamic Studies Course Nur Aainaa Bajuri @ Mok , Syahmi Haziq Osmera, Wan Noorliza Wan Abdullah Sani, Mohd Mutawalli Sya’rawi, Siti Nor Ahiasah Shafak Ahmad and Nur Nashrah Isahak Centre of Islamic Thought & Understanding (CITU), Intec Education College [email protected] The growing imbalance between theoretical and practical knowledge of fardhu ain among muslim students has drawn attention to the need of supplementary aid to boost mastery. Teaching and learning in the 21st century becomes even more challenging especially in gauging students attention and interest. The influx of electronic gadget and devices with myriad entertainment readily available at one’s convenient became the main interest of students, undermining the allure of knowledge and wisdom. Interpersonal interaction and social time also diminishes significantly striking fundamental human soft skills. Research has shown that embedding board games in teaching and learning has posed a positive cognitive effect, it presented positive relationship between board game play and learning as well as effective in developing soft skills. Board game in a learning setting also enhances flow, motivation and absorption. However, further research is required to understand the effect of board game especially in grasping a knowledge with parallel focal points of both theory and practical such as fardhu ain. We employ board game in pre university Islamic studies courses to simultaneously assess and guide students on fardhu ain theory and practical. It is also conveniently accessible in and off-class. Each board game is customise for a specific fardhu ain lesson, with example a board game on solat is named “Solat Quest”. Initial findings on Solat Quest show significant interest on user’s attention and interest with adult users also benefitting in terms of enhancing their solat knowledge. More documented findings are underway as part of continuous research initiative. For future improvement, we recommend embedding augmented reality (AR) features on Solat Quest to enhance users experience, paving the way to the development of hybrid Fardhu ‘Ain board game.

God Centric Universe Model: A New Universe Model Suitable with The Scientific and Islamic Perspective Norul Ridzuan Bin Zakaria Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah [email protected] The pre-Copernicus model of universe, known as Geo Centric Universe Model was introduced by Greek philosophers before 100AD. The model described Earth as the center of the universe and survived for 1500 years until the emergence of Helio Centric Universe model published by Copernicus in 1543, which described that the center of the Solar System is the Sun. This universe model became the basis for the modern understanding of the universal design of planetary system which described that the center of all planetary systems is a star or stars as most of the stars were discovered to be of two or three stars systems and have planets orbiting them or each of them. Even the nearest planetary system to the Sun is a system of three stars called Alpha Centauri and each star is orbited by planets. Helio Centric Universe also explains the universality of the planets in planetary systems where there could be planet or planets similar to Earth in term of habitability within the Goldilocks Zone, which is a zone where habitable planet or planets may exist. One of the most important requirements for being a habitable planet within the zone is to permanently having liquid water on the surface or subsurface. Alpha Centauri too may have the Goldilocks Zones with habitable planets. However, according to the Islamic perspective, Earth is a unique planet, where human being exists. God Centric Universe model describes the universality of Earth in term of Astronomy but the uniqueness of Earth theologically. It also describes that having a Goldilocks Zone is not enough for a planet to support life as demonstrated by multiple factors at planetary system level for human being existence on planet Earth.

Innovative Waqf Practices: Justifications, Principles and Needs Sayyed Mohamed Muhsin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] The world we live in has undergone tremendous transformation and encountered utterly different lifestyles, which as a result, demands commensurate adjustments and modifications in waqf practices. That adjustment, innovation, and fresh insights are crucial in fulfilling Maqāṣid Sharīʿah in general and Maqāṣid al-waqf in particular. This change is noticeably inevitable due to the negligence, malpractices and mismanagement inflicted on the Islamic endowment sector for the last few centuries. Against this background, adopting exploratory, descriptive and analytical methods, the current study investigates the bases and glimpses of perfection and innovation permeated in the attributes of Allah, innovation as a duty of a Muslim, the necessity of innovation in waqf practices, the prerequisites of innovation and its successful models. This study asserts that a transition in the modus operandi from traditional and classical to progressive and contemporary is the high need of the hour. To achieve soulful excellence (iḥsān) in waqf practices, the factor of innovation (ibdāʿ) is unavoidable. These changes and innovations might sometimes be unconventional but can be welcomed and accommodated as long as they are within the jurisprudential parameter and Maqāṣid Sharīʿah framework.

Integrating Geography & Quranic Verses in Islamic History Lessons Nur Aainaa Bajuri @ Mok Centre of Islamic Thought & Understanding (CITU), Intec Education College [email protected] The quality of history lessons in an academic settings has been the topic of discussion in many research worldwide. Research conducted in many countries shows lack of interest among students with teaching lessons are seen as ineffective and history described as dull and boring. Previous research also emphasise on the teacher factor where educators training is deemed inadequate, affecting teaching skills, competencies, content knowledge and selection of teaching method. Previous research aimed at improving history lesson proposed engaging students in historical imagination, adopting active learning with films and historical fictions, embedding maps and chart practice in lessons, shifting emphasis from verbalism to purposeful learning. Adept educators is also indispensable in the pursuit of quality lessons. Educators with good background in history is intended to become a storyteller with the vigour to constantly expand knowledge. Nevertheless, more methods and teaching structure is still needed especially in teaching Islamic history. Learning history seems detached from religion that it fails to bring students closer to God. In this research, we applied two distinct teaching method, first, incorporating geography knowledge second, integrating verses of Al-Quran. Research is conducted in pre-university history lessons such as Rise of Islamic Civilisation, Introduction to Civilisation, and Early Civilisations in the World. Students are taught basic geographical background, its topography and the connection with history. Related Quranic verses are discussed in depth to understand the connection with said history and learn the wisdom behind it. Positive reception is recorded with students displaying good engagement in map quizzes and discussion. A shift in perception to the subject of history in general is also detected with encouraging remarks such as, “learning history has never been this interesting.” Thus, incorporating such methods in the teaching of history are highly recommended to enhance lessons efficacy.

Islamic Ethical Halal Policy on Recombinant Collagen-Like Protein: A Qur’ãnic Guidance Norhazirah binti Burhanuddin, Dr. Raudlotul Firdaus binti Fatah Yasin, Dr. Nurul Jannah Zainan Nazri International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Collagen is popular due to its high demand, especially in food and beverages, cosmetics, and health industries due to various applications to human bodies. However, most commercial collagen and gelatine are obtained from mammals, mainly from bovine bone, hide, and porcine skin, mostly from non-Halãl based that recently being questioned about their Halãl status, particularly among Muslim consumers. Being the first Recombinant Collagen-like Protein that will be commercialised in the marketplace, this study attempts to identify Sharī’ah critical points in the process of producing recombinant collagen likeprotein and to develop Islamic ethical science policy by adhering to the Islamic guiding principles, i.e., the Quran and the Prophetic Hadīth. In doing so, this research employed qualitative design by combining three methods which are analytical, inductive, and deductive approaches based on the related verses from the Qur'ãn and Hadīth. By using all the gathered data, this study proposes an Islamic ethical science policy for handling the process of Recombinant Collagen-like Protein, which is the fourth objective of this study. Most importantly, Qur’ãnic Prophetic studies and pure sciences are integrated. Islamic ethical science policy is very important to guide each step of the process of Recombinant Collagen-like Protein as well as a suitable yardstick for other future scientific inventions. Islam, with its acknowledgement of a spiritual and holistic view of life, has provided comprehensive ethical guidance for the betterment of humankind, including the scientific field. Islamic ethics are based on sacred authoritative sources, the Qur’ãn and the Prophetic Hadīth. This differs Islamic ethics from other ethical theories in that all these ethical judgements are based on human desires and possibilities of biased views. Therefore, the findings of this study are timely as it develops guiding principles for Islamic Ethical Science Policy for the proposed method of producing new scientific invention, particularly related to Recombinant Collagen-like Protein, which is suitable and safe for Muslim consumers in terms of its processes, manufacturing, retailing, and promotions.

Millenial Muslims Production, Distribution, And Consumption of Islamic Teachings Material in Online Space: Hedonism or Spirituality? Dr. Nurdin Nuridn, Dr. Sagaf S. Pettalongi Universitas Islam Negeri Datokarama Palu [email protected] A number of Millenia Muslims have gone online to search for Islamic teaching. They produce and disseminate digital Islamic teaching material. At the same time, they also consume the material to increase Islamic knowledge and spirituality. Some argue that millennial Muslim behavior is hedonism due to the arrival of new media. In contrast, others posit it as a new way of building knowledge and spirituality due to the changing interaction mode supported by new media. Using Social Media Engagement Theory, we interviewed 25 participants from three Islamic universities in Indonesia to gain insight into the production, share, and consumption of Islamic teachings in online space. We employed a qualitative interpretive approach in this study, and we also used an ethnography approach when we observed a social media group of millennia cadre ulama in Indonesia. Our study found that the production, sharing, and use of Islamic teaching material in online space is intended to ease access to Islamic knowledge and increase spirituality. Millennial Muslims do not consider using and interacting with digital Islamic teaching material a hedonistic style. Instead, they argue that the arrival of new media impose them to change the way to access Islamic teachings material and increase spirituality. New media allow them to produce, disseminate, and consume Islamic teaching and knowledge more easily. Interaction and collaboration in online halaqah are considered a new way to increase spirituality in the current era when they are under pressure to perform jobs in daily life. The findings highlight that new religious authorities, such as virtual preachers and online fatwa makers, might have emerged and replaced conventional ones, such as clerics and madrasahs, in increasing Islamic knowledge and spirituality. Future studies should focus on how to deal with the possibility of new religious authorities' emergence.

Modern Education and Pragmatism in Malaysia Sakinah Munarwarrah binti Hashim International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Since independence, Malaysia education system has undergone numbers of changes and modifications. As known to many, the British colonial authority left behind the former educational system. However, in 1961, there was a gradual transition from the British (English School) education system to a Malaysian school system focusing on unique Malaysian-oriented curriculum. In 1979, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed, a former prime minister of Malaysia, introduced curriculum changes for the country's education system. He placed an emphasis on all levels of schooling on a holistic approach which includes intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional development for humans across all cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. As discussed above, Malaysia has already had a sound and stable educational system. However, in light of the current state of globalisation and recent insightful findings in relation to the world of education, it is necessary to implement pragmatism in Malaysia's education system in order to give students the best possible preparation for their futures. In particular, this study focuses on Malaysia's education system in light of the current state of the modern world, which is constantly changing and challenging. It is intriguing to see how pragmatism is applied and how things are going in Malaysian education landscape. The purpose of the study is to analyse and assess how pragmatism is applied in Malaysia's education system, specifically for Muslims. The elements and significance of pragmatism on education are further examined, and will interview people who have background of Islamic and nonIslamic background. And then followed by insightful discussion on pragmatism and Islamic education for Muslims.

ÑIlm Al-RiwÉyah in Sahih Al-BukhÉrÊ Fatimah Muhammad International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Al-JamiÑ Al-ØaÍÊÍ of Al-ImÉm Al-BukhÉrÊ is considered as the most authentic ×adith collection in the Muslim world, as well as the main source of its Prophetic traditions. Despite this masterpiece being subject to extensive studies, it has yet to be fully explored through the lens of ×adith Studies (ÑUlËm Al-×adith), where the elements of ÑIlm AlRiwÉyah that it embodies is extracted for further exploration. At such, this research is aimed at investigating the elements of ÑIlm Al-RiwÉyah through its intrinsic embodiment in Al-JamiÑ Al-ØaÍÊÍ. Four methodologies are employed in achieving the said objective; namely the Historical and Descriptive methodology, both utilized to explore AlBukhÉrÊ's background in relation to ÑIlm Al-RiwÉyah, as well as its development until the time of Al-BukhÉrÊ. The third and the fourth are the Analytical and Inductive methodologies, where academic materials related to the topic are gathered, assessed, and further analysed. The outcome produces a set of examples for elements of ÑIlm AlRiwÉyah which are deduced and extracted directly from the AÍÉdÊth texts of Al-JamiÑ Al-ØaÍÊÍ. This comes to prove Al-JamiÑ Al-ØaÍÊÍ as an ideal and exemplary book for further exploration of ÑIlm Al-RiwÉyah, as well as its potential to serve as a comprehensive manual for the study of ÑUlËm Al-×adith in today's era.

Promoting Interreligious Mediation: Why Malaysians Need It Haslina Ibrahim International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Malaysia takes pride in being a multiracial and multireligious society. In the past, polarisation used to be a stumbling block to unity. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, more emphasis has been placed on the need to find ways to achieve unity at the grassroots and governmental levels. One of the challenges to unity in Malaysia is that race and religion are so intertwined. Disputes involving either race or religion may possibly affect each other in negative ways. The authorities categorise both as sensitive issues that can be subjected to the Sedition Act. Hence, racial and religious disputes are unlikely to become public debates. Therefore, the most common approach to mitigating them was through litigation. In this regard, the author intends to introduce part of her research engagements involving interreligious mediation in Malaysia. This is in view of the fact that Malaysians are among the top users of social media whereas we are very aware that there have been biased comments made by irresponsible citizens. Such comments can incite racial anger and hatred among the Malaysian pluralistic society. Finally, the author intends to share some strategic measures to promote and realise interreligious mediation in Malaysia.

Prophetic Hadiths in Friday Sermons Across Different States in Malaysia: A Comparative Critical Study Mohd Masri bin Mohd Ramli International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the prophetic hadiths mentioned in Friday sermons across three states in Malaysia: Johor, Kelantan, and Perlis, during the year 2019. The primary objectives of this research are to collect and examine all prophetic hadiths found in 52 sermon texts from each state, assess their authenticity, and identify the methodologies employed by the states when referencing these hadiths in Friday sermons. The research methodology involves an inductive approach to scrutinize the hadiths quoted in the sermons, employing an analytical method to evaluate their authenticity. Additionally, a descriptive and comparative method is employed to analyze the sermon texts, following the standard procedures established by religious authorities in each state for publishing Friday sermons. The aim is to arrive at unbiased conclusions that can contribute to enhancing the quality of quoted hadiths and promoting the accurate methodology for incorporating hadiths in Friday sermons. The study yields noteworthy results. Each state exhibits varying levels of interest in including hadiths in their Friday sermons. Perlis demonstrates a high inclination, consistently featuring prophetic hadiths in all of its sermon texts. Kelantan, however, does not include any prophetic hadiths in its five sermon texts. Johor exhibits the least interest, as no prophetic hadiths are quoted in any of its seventeen sermon texts. Additionally, the majority of prophetic hadiths cited in the sermon texts of these three states are derived from kutub tis'ah, with a significant proportion classified as sahih or hasan. Furthermore, distinct methodologies for quoting hadiths are observed among the three states, including: 1) the avoidance of weak and fabricated hadiths, 2) the indication of hadith authenticity, and 3) the quoting of hadiths from their original Arabic sources. Notably, certain critical errors in the quotation of hadiths have been identified, such as the inclusion of fabricated or severely weak hadiths, misattribution of hadith sources, and the incorrect ascription of sayings from companions or tabiin to the Prophet (pbuh). In conclusion, this study presents a comprehensive methodology for incorporating hadiths in Friday sermons. Key recommendations include: 1) prioritizing primary sources, particularly the nine main books of hadiths, 2) selecting authentic or hasan hadiths whenever possible, unless weak hadiths are the sole available option, 3) subjecting hadiths not derived from Sahihain to thorough authentication, and 4) utilizing reliable books of hadith interpretation authored by both classical and contemporary scholars. These guidelines aim to ensure the accuracy and credibility of hadiths quoted in Friday sermons, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of religious discourse and practice.

The Human Soul in The Quran: An Analytical Study from The Perspective of Islamic Psychology Kallan Fathima Shahanas International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] Western theories and ideas have dominated every domain of knowledge and have been adopted by people, even if they contradict the truth. This is particularly evident in the conceptualization of the soul, where Western psychology appears to have lost its essence, completely disregarding the truth behind the soul by considering it as mere machines influenced by external stimuli. The purpose of this study is to understand the true nature of the soul in the light of Quranic verses and analyze it from the perspective of Islamic psychology. The Holy Quran places great importance on the issue of the soul, and its verses and interpretations play a significant role in revealing the truth about the human soul. However, there are differences in the portrayal of soul when scrutinized from Quranic concepts of the soul or self. Hence, the disparity between the Quran and psychological theories regarding human soul motivates the researcher to conduct a library study on the dimensions of the human soul in Quranic concepts, serving as the foundation for Islamic psychological thinking, additionally, this study aims to explore the ideas of Muslim thinkers in this field, which have been largely overlooked due to language barriers, through content and descriptive analysis of data. The study concludes that humans are composed of physical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. Humans are born with inherent good traits alongside naturally inherent elements such as the soul. The findings indicate that there is an inner science of self-development deeply embedded within the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet. Western psychology approaches the soul based on its own worldview, focusing solely on environmental factors, while the reality is that, soul is shaped not only by environmental factors but also by its divine nature (Fithrah) and other factors.

The Scope of Illah (causal effect) of Ribah Prohibition on Gold and Silver: A Juristic Analysis Dr. Saheed Abdullahi Busari International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] There is a consensus among Muslim scholars that Riba is generally forbidden, but there is subjective interpretation of the scope and limitation of the regarding its criteria and sub-rulings. The jurists are unanimous that the prohibition of Riba (usury) in Islam is definitive, but the application to different modern currencies is subject to interpretation. Whether the Illah (causal effect) of the Prohibition of Ribah should be limited to Gold and Silver or if its scope extends to other currencies recognized as mediums of exchange. According to the hadith that states the selling of certain commodities, such as gold, wheat, barley, and dates, is considered usury unless the exchange is done hand to hand and in equal amounts. This study aims to explicate why the classical jurists of the Shafii school of law opined that gold and silver are the Mahali Illah (Place of causal effect), which are the primary currencies where Riba is likely to occur. It states that the Illah (causal effect) of Riba in gold and silver is that they are mostly used as prices. The Shafie scholars have limited the application of the Illah of gold and silver to these metals specifically, and they have not considered non-gold or silver coins as substitute currencies. There is a need for further investigation into the reasons behind non-extension, whether its extension is definitely prohibited in this matter or because there was no available paper currency during the classical time, which made the some of the scholars of Shafii to limit Mahali illah (place of causal effect) to only gold and silver. The paper uses a doctrinal approach of qualitative methods to analyze the reasons why some scholars of Shafii positioned that the Illah (effective cause) of ribah prohibition is limited to gold and silver, while others contend the permissibility of analogical deduction (Qiyas) to extend and interpolate the causal effect of Ribah from gold and silver to modern currency.

Kata Ganti Diri Dalam Ayat Pertama Surah ‘Abasa Menurut ‘Inayatullah Subhani Arif Amin bin Rushihi Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah [email protected] Terdapat banyak ayat Al-Quran yang memuji akhlak mulia Nabi Muhammad SAW.

A Comparative Study on The Use of Lexical Bundles in Abstracts of Literature And Linguistics Nur Atikah Yusri, Dr. Ainul Azmin Md Zamin International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] This research attempts to compare the functional aspects of lexical bundles in postgraduate abstracts of literary and linguistics theses. Literary and linguistics research are relatively different even though both are considered part of the language field. Identifying the differences in lexical bundle use in the two fields is necessary to assist ESP instruction. As the students of IIUM consist of ESL and EFL learners, this study also aims to identify lexical bundle misuse in postgraduate abstracts of literature and linguistics theses. The study has taken a corpus-driven approach using Antconc software to extract lexical bundles from a data set of 76 postgraduate theses abstracts. The data was then analysed using ATLAS.ti in order to determine lexical bundle function and misuse. The study adopted Hyland’s (2008b) functional taxonomy of lexical bundles and Huang’s (2015) lexical bundle misuse criteria. The findings indicate that the difference in lexical bundle type and frequency relates to the linguistics and literary research’s writing style, structure, and topic. Both linguistics and literary research only registered two functions of lexical bundles; text-oriented and research oriented. On the other hand, the bundle misuse indicates that the bundle use of IIUM literature and linguistics postgraduate students does not need much improvement. The outcome of the analysis reflects that of a polished work that has been proofread and edited. As a result, there was no evidence of lexical bundle misuse in this investigation. The findings of this study are not to be generalised to a whole population as the study works with a limited data set.

A New Form of Governance? Bangsamoro Youth Respective on Moral Governance in Barmm Saiful Islam Gayak International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] In the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OLBARMM) more popular in Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), Republic Act No.11504), BARMM is the new, bigger, and more powerful political entity in the island of Mindanao compared to the old ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao). This new form of political entity proposes “Moral Governance,” a quite new and unfamiliar form of governance for many, and seldom can be read or found in scholarly articles. This form of governance (Moral Governance) needs to be developed but its underlying principles and characteristics remained to be unclear. This research was designed and established on the basis of quantitative research methodology answering three research questions about Bangamoro Youth’s perspectives on BARMM’s Moral Governance, its underlying principles, and the anticipated challenges for this type of governance. The researcher distributed a questionnaire to the Bangsamoro youth in order to explore their overall perceptions on the principles regarding Moral Governance as well as the challenges to achieve it. The research concludes and proposes that Moral Governance in BARMM follows Prophet Muhammad’s صلى الله عليه وسلم moral based governance in Medina when it was first established by the Prophet in its early stages. It also suggests that the three major things that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم implemented in Medina namely, Binaa Al-Masjid or building of Masjid, the Muaakhaa or brotherhood between the Ansaar and Muhaajiroon, and the Saheefah(t) Medina or written constitution of Medina inspired BARMM’s Moral Governance. Furthermore, this research also found out that the Bangsamoro youth believes that the most significant groups of people and aspects in BARMM’S Moral Governance are the Bangsamoro youth and Mujahideens, and religion and education respectively. Moreover, internal challenges, external challenges, internal obstacles, and external obstacles are the four major themes of problems that may hinder BARMM’s Moral Governance.

A Syntactic Error Analysis Committed by Morpho-syntax Students in English Writing Composition Nor Elena A Rahim and Siti Afifah Hashim International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected] This study examined the English syntactic errors in the written performance of 107 first year Morpho-syntax students in the Bachelor of English Language and Literature (BENL) programme at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The objective of this study is to describe the syntax error patterns committed by the students in their written composition as writing is a challenging skill that requires knowledge of grammar, language structure, orthography, and vocabulary. Data were collected from a written discourse in the form of descriptive essay. Each student wrote an essay of 250-300 words in the classroom within 45 minutes. Fifteen categories of errors were classified to ascertain the syntactic errors, its frequency, types, and causes. Preliminary findings of the study showed that erroneous verb and prepositional phrases, faulty spelling and punctuation, redundant/incorrect lexical choice, and run on sentences were among the syntactic errors committed by most of the students and these syntactic errors may be due to the lack of grammatical knowledge, lack of sentence formation knowledge, and students’ literal translation from mother-tongue.

ACT For Life: The Development and User Engagements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Mobile Application for Management of Psychological Distress Dr. Jamilah Hanum Abdul Khaiyom, Amani Fadzlina Abdul Aziz, Dr. Ahmad Nabil Md. Rosli, Dr. Che Amnah Bahari, Dr. Nur Sakinah Thomas Abdullah International Islamic University Malaysia Al-Madinah International University [email protected] Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the ways of modern healthcare delivery, and remote methods of delivering evidence-based mental healthcare are more important now. Digital mental health interventions can reduce cost, transcend physical limits, and increase flexibility and autonomy of users, making its use arguably vital in managing the mental health impact of the pandemic. Objective: The study elaborates the development and user engagements of ACT for Life, a mobile application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for management of psychological distress. Method: The mobile application ACT For Life was developed based on the cloud-based instant messaging i-ACT for Life program that has been tested its effectiveness. The program comprises five weekly modules corresponding to an ACT core process. The microcontents were designed in infographic format, 7 interactive exercises, 12 audio exercises, and 7 psychoeducation videos. ACT For Life drops the integrated Islamic spiritual strategies from the original program for multireligious people in Malaysia. The users are encouraged to take Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items (DASS-21) before and after the program. The current mobile application is integrated as part of Selangor Mental Sihat (SEHAT), a comprehensive mental health application involving mental health awareness, literacy, screening, early intervention, and subsidized psychiatric intervention sponsored and managed by Selangor state government. Results: ACT for Life mobile application was live in SEHAT since October 2022. As of May 2023, the number of users for SEHAT and ACT for Life is 94,523 and 3,023 (3.2%), respectively. 5/8 people complete the program in 5 weeks. In terms of outcome measure, 3/8 users (i.e., completers) completed both the pre- and post-DASS-21. Conclusions: The total number of engagements suggests that the ACT for Life mobile application is accessible for the users. However, sustainability of user engagements needs to be improved by increasing promotion of the program.
