Foreword
Why is literature important? Why should educators, parents and
community members help students develop love and passion for
reading?
Giving children access to all genres of literature is extremely im-
portant for a number of reasons. It not only helps in developing
cognitive skills but also exposes children to the wisdom of the ages.
It gives students appreciation about their own cultural heritage as
well as those of others.
It fosters emotional intelligence and creativity. It nurtures growth
and development of the student’s personality and social skills. It
makes the students think about, analyse, appreciate, learn from and
respond to various underlying themes and messages of literature.
Wonder is a truly wonderful literature course, with texts gleaned from
a variety of genres and supplemented with engaging activities. As
the students begin reading the texts, they can no more afford to re-
main passive readers. They are constantly questioned and asked to
respond. Quality literature does not tell the reader everything he or
she needs to know. Rather, it allows for some difference in opinion.
One reader may take something completely different away from a
piece of literature than the next reader, based on the two personal
viewpoints and experiences. Students learn to evaluate and analyse
literature, and in the process, they develop as independent thinkers
who can form and express opinions with clarity.
Through this series, we have attempted to foster the culture of read-
ing. Well-read children of today will certainly go on to build a more
cohesive society tomorrow.
We would be delighted to receive your feedback. We pledge to as-
sist all those involved in the teaching and learning of this series. Do
use the resource materials that are provided free and also feel free
to contact us.

A Mysterious Dog
Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are
times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As
he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would
have been a stray dog, until, he came to me.
It was raining very
heavily on that day. I
went out and felt those
refreshing raindrops
with a cool breeze on
my face. It was a cold
dark night. We had our
meal and went to sleep.
Somehow in the
midnight I heard a loud

noise outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out
through the window and I was really amused with what I saw
outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old piece of cloth which my
mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At
first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on
its eyes, which made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get inside the cloth from a curve to avoid the cold
air outside.
I felt sad when I saw it. I went in and came out with an old towel.
I went near it; held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he
had become dry. I took it inside and made a bed for him with a

woolen clothes and a small pillow. He seemed very comfortable
in his new bed.
The next day morning, everyone in the family came to know
about the new guest. “Shall we keep him with us?" I questioned
my mom.
Do you think her parents let her keep that dog?
At first, my parents totally refused my idea but they accepted to
keep Spotty.
The dog easily got familiar with everyone and became one of the
family members. We got used to with all his small habits and
pranks.
Days passed on and one evening when Spotty returned from his

long walk, he appeared very tired. He came to my room and sat
near me. It was then I saw that one of his legs was injured. My
mother quickly tied a bandage around his leg and gave him food
to eat.
After this incident, I loved it more deeply. I really praised him a
lot for his courage.
Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking loudly.
We came out and saw that he was barking continuously heading
somewhere.
After some time Spotty became
quite. I patted him on his back and
came inside. The next morning, I
found him nowhere. I searched for
him in each and every corner but he
was nowhere. And this time he had
gone and would never come back. I
cried and waited for him. But there
were no signs of him.
Days passed. But the memories of the dog are still fresh in my
mind.

with his friends. He called up his friends to come to his house,
but no one was available.

Jake called Keith's parents. The doctor let Keith go and he was
taken back to his house. Dad was angry at him for lying. Mom,
however, convinced Dad not to scold him.
Soon, Keith began to see
different side of his family.
His Dad brought him the best
magazines, books and games
to keep him busy.
"What do you want to eat?"
mom said time and again.
And, she cooked for him
all of his favourite dishes
and made sure he took his
medicines on time.
His sister gave him massage whenever he was in pain.
Similarly, his grandparents told him stories of all the mischief
they had done when they were his age.
His cousins played games with him whenever he felt bored and
his youngest brother brought him work from school to keep him
updated. He started feeling happier in his environment.
Now, Keith felt happy to be a part of the family.
He said to himself, "What would I have done without them? They
have helped me heal back and I just cannot imagine how I would
have gone through this pain alone. Their support did not let me
like a handicapped. I'm sorry dad for lying. But this accident
showed me the real meaning of a big, happy family."
Since then, he never complained about living with his family.

A mother is special, she’s more than a friend.
Whenever you need her, she’ll give you a hand.
She’ll lead you and guide you in all that you do.
Try all that she can just to see you get through.
Good times and bad times, she’s there for it all.
Say head up, be proud, and always stand tall.
She’ll love you through quarrels and even big fights,

All of the things that I have been going through,
Make me realize what you say is true.
The things that you always told,
Will remain in my heart even I'm old.
I still have a lot to learn,
No matter how much my heart will burn
Mom I just want to tell you,
That I'm sorry for all the hell I put you through,
And I want you to remember that
I LOVE YOU!!
