A Day of Ava

Hello everyone! My name is Ava. I'm 9 years old. I'm from Nepal.
I live with my family in Dhangadhi, a beautiful city of western
Terai.

Usually I get up at 6 am every day except Saturday. On Saturdays,
I get up at 7:00 or so. Every day, after I get up, I wash my face,
and comb my hair. I, together with my parents, go jogging for
about half an hour. We do different exercises and Yoga.

Then, I have a shower with cool fresh water but during winter
season I use lukewarm water. Then I have breakfast. Usually I
have an omelet and a glass of milk. While my mother prepares

52 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

food for me, I do my homework and study. I also help my parents
doing different things at home if I finish my studies.

I have my lunch at 9, brush my teeth and get ready for school. I
go to school on foot. It takes me 20 minutes to get to school. But
sometimes, my father drops me to school if he has free time. Our
school starts at 10 am. I enjoy all the lessons but I'm excellent at
Science. I want to become a scientist one day. I help my friends
with their problems and timely submit all the tasks assigned
by the teachers. At 1:15, we have a break. I eat homemade food
for snacks. At 3:40 o'clock, the lessons are over. I usually have 7
lessons except for Friday. On Friday we have 4 lessons.

As soon as I return back home, I eat whatever my mother prepares
for me. Then, I play with my friends for about an hour and come

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Book - 3 53

back home; and start doing my homework. We have dinner at
around 7 pm every day. Then, I brush my teeth.

I watch TV for about half an hour. I love to watch National
Geography and Discovery Channel. They teach us good lessons
and take us to adventures, too. I hardly play video games on
my computer. I find them rather boring. On Fridays, we go to
movies or watch movies in our TV set together. I really enjoy this
moment.

After my tasks are over, I listen to different songs and watch
videos. I go to bed at around 9:30.

The Homework Party

"Charlieeee, do your
homework now!" His
mother was shouting at
him. Charlie thought, "Well,
she doesn't have to do it.
It's so boring." For students
doing homework is like
doing chores. But for him
it's something different.

And, he spent hours with
his books hoping that time
would pass and it would
soon be time for supper.
As usual, he was lying on
his bed, busy staring at
the ceiling, daydreaming.
Suddenly some little elves,
no more than a centimetre
tall, appeared by the window.

"Good evening, young man, will you please give us your
homework so we can play with it?" asked one of them politely.
Charlie laughed.

Do you think Charlie will let them play with his homework?

"How are you going to play with the homework?" It's the most
boring stuff there is! Ha, ha, ha ………. Go on, take it. You can

62 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

play on it as long as you like."

Charlie watched his guests, and was so surprised to see what
they did. In less than a minute, they had formed teams and were
busy playing with the pen, eraser, the book, and the pad of paper.
Very strange stuff they were getting up to. Like with the sums,
instead of moving the pen across the paper, they would hold the
pen still and move the paper instead. Or, like how they had races
to see who could do the sums faster. And then the all dressed up
as either Father Christmas, a Halloween pumpkin, or a bag of
cheese. And whenever the clock was stopped, the elf who was in
the lead got to draw himself in the notepad.

So the pad ended up full of Santas and pumpkins. They were
also really funny while learning to read. They used well-known
songs, and had to learn the words to them. When they had done
that they put on a big concert to sing those songs.

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Book - 3 63

Charlie really enjoyed those little students; he even joined in
with the singing. And time passed so quickly, that suddenly his
mother was calling him for supper.

Aww, what a pain! This is so much fun…" he groaned as he got
up to go to supper. "Of course, it's fun! I already told you. Why
don't you try it for a few days yourself? We'll all come back to see
you again from time to time."

"Deal!" agreed Charlie.

So, every evening, Charlie started playing with his homework,
finding new and crazy ways to make it more fun. He would dress
up, sing loads of songs and do all manner of other things too.
Now and again, his elf friends would turn up, although the truth
was that he wasn't sure whether they really had come through
the window or from out of his own imagination.

Neither Charlie's parents, nor his teachers and anyone else in
the whole school could understand the great change in him.
From that day on, not only did he spend a lot more time doing
homework, he did it perfectly and with lots of drawings. He was
very happy and was always singing. His mother told him how
proud she was seeing him work so hard, especially at something
she knew he found boring.

But Charlie said to himself, "Well, she doesn't have to do it. It's a
fun!"

Literary term

Have you ever seen two completely unrelated things compared in
a piece of literary writing? If yes, it's the case of simile. In simile,
writers compare two things using 'like' and 'as'. It's different from
simple comparison. Let's look at some examples:

She smiles like the Sun.

My heart is like a shining bird.

He's as hungry as a wolf.

My love is like a red, red rose.

The School Picnic

Like every other morning, tea was boiling on the stove, Mom
was cooking food and Dad was reading the newspaper. All of my
school friends were going on ‘the school picnic’ and like every
other convent school you had to submit the fees before the trip.
Trust me that before eight years from today, 800 rupees was not a
small amount for a middle class family but then also, I gathered
the potential to ask my Dad about picnic. I asked my father

“May I go for the trip dad?”

80 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

At first instance he didn’t answer me, then I asked my question
again. This time he moved his newspaper slightly and said “No”.
Before that I never disagreed with my father but that day I started
being obstinate.

“N-no I want to go. Let me go, everyone is going”.

He told me in anger that no means no. Then, I took my school
bag and ran towards school.

After reaching the school, I saw all my friends were planning
about the picnic and I was thinking. “What type of parents they
are, they don’t even want to see the happiness of their own child”.

I don’t even know what I was saying.

The road from school to home was just a walk of fifteen minutes
but that day I covered that road in 1 hour. When I approached
home, my mother asked me

“Why are you late today?”

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Book - 3 81

I didn’t respond to her. She understood that I was angry. Father
came at night and called me lovingly

“Biju, come here.”

I went to him and he told me that he didn't have enough money,
so we could not afford it now. He would let me go the next time.
In my obstinacy and hostility I was saying so much unacceptable
words that he almost slapped on my cheeks. He scolded me that
I would never be matured.

That night I cried so much, that I went to bed with an empty
stomach. When I slightly opened my eyes at night because of
hunger, I saw my mom and dad discussing about the trip. Mom
told dad that he should allow me to go as I go only once a year,
I would be happy too. Dad didn’t respond, he got up from his
chair and went outside to walk. Now it was sure that I was not
going to sleep all the night in curiosity of whether I could go to
picnic or not.

Do you think the father lets him go to the picnic?

Next morning dad came to me and gave me money for the trip. At
this time I was so happy that I was not able to express it in words.
I took my cycle and went to school but on the way I realized that
I had forgotten to take my lunch. So, I turned my cycle and went
home. When I reached home I saw mom and dad talking about
the money for the trip. Mom asked dad how he got the money
and asked if he had sold his watch. Dad answered in a strange
manner.

82 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

“W-what rubbish are you talking about?”

I saw his empty wrist. I understood that dad really sold his watch
for my trip money. I stared sobbing, standing at the door.

Now when I came back from school, my father asked me if I
had submitted the trip fees. I didn’t answer him and went to my
room. Then I came to him and put a brand new watch in his
hand. I knew that this watch was not like the old one but had a
similar built to it. I asked my dad in a childish manner

“A-are you going to wear that or not?”

After wearing the watch my dad’s eyes filled with tears and the
one thing he said

“Now my son has grown up.”

What a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white,
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow, so
pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces, of people
going by,

I see friends shaking hands

They're really sayin', "I love you."

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more, than I'll ever know,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

Yes, I think to myself,
What a wonderful world,
Oh, yeah.

My Favourite Season

seasons; spring,

summer, autumn

and winter. Of

these four seasons,

favourite season. In

our country, winter

begins in November

and ends at around

the month of

February. The

Nepal, the temperatures go very low and there is snowfall.

The winter season is my favourite season because we get our
vacation at that time. We have a two week long vacation and my
father usually takes us to different new places every year. This
year, we are planning to go to Ilam, the queen of the eastern hill.

In this season, people put on warm clothes and woolens to save
themselves from the severe cold. My grandma knits coluorful
sweaters and gloves for us and my favourite is the purple hand
gloves that she knitted for me last year.

Some people make bonfires at the backyard of their home and
sit by it for a long time. I see people making large fires at their
compounds even early in the morning. I see many such people
when I go to morning classes. It's foggy in many parts and fumes
come out of our mouths when we speak. For school, we wear
blazers of our school uniform and long stockings to stay warm.

Our mother bakes very delicious cakes for us in the winter
season. My sister likes the carrot cake while I prefer chocolate
