The Dangers of Television!

Mr. Pandey was a lovely old man. He always had a smile on his
face. Mr. Pandey loved people. He loved his garden, where he
grew flowers and vegetables. Everyone liked Mr. Pandey.
Everything was fine before he got a television set. Mr. Pandey
decided to buy a television set because he was lonely in the
evenings. He had nothing else to do.

Why do you think Mr Pandey will buy a television?

Mr. Pandey thought the television was wonderful. He loved to
watch sports. He loved to watch films. But best of all he loved to
watch the advertisements.
But soon Mr. Pandey started to become annoyed. He was only
able to watch one channel at a time. He was missing all the other
good programmes on the other channels. He decided to buy a
video recorder to record the programmes he missed. Everything
was fine for some time.

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Book - 3 157

Then Mr. Pandey got annoyed again. When he went into the
kitchen to make himself something to eat he was not able to
watch television. So he moved his kitchen into his living room!
He moved his stove and his fridge to the living room. He also
moved his bed. He spent all day and most of the night watching
television.

Why did he sell his garden?

He did not have time to do gardening so he sold his garden. He
spent the money to buy some more television sets. Now he had
lots of television sets in his room. He had a different programme
on each set. He watched many programmes at the same time. It
was very noisy.

Soon there was no room for any more television sets. His room
was full of them but Mr. Pandey did not care. He did not go out
anymore. He never saw his friends. He never talked to anyone.
The only thing he ever did was watch television. Mr. Pandey had
become a television addict!

We’re riding high and low.
Out prancing horses leap and bound
And gallop high above the ground
As round about
And round about
And roundabout we go.

Swinging in the swing boat,
Swinging as we go;
Swinging, swinging, swinging,
High and then low,
Swinging to the cloudy sky,
High, low, high,
Swinging to the ground below,
Low, high, low.

The gleaming world begins to reel
As upwards steals the great Big Wheel.
We’re slowly lifted through the air,
Until we see the see-thing Fair,
The stalls, the swings, the streaming people,

the king was walking

saw the paintings of
his forefathers.

But, the king did not

All of the painters began to think, "The king only has one leg
and one eye. How can his picture be made very beautiful? It is
not possible. If the picture does not look beautiful then the king
will get angry and punish us." So no one was ready to make the
painting of the king.

But, one painter raised his hand and said, "I can make."

The king became happy. He asked, "How much time do you need
for that?"

"Three months, sir", said the painter.

The king gave him the permission.

The painter started drawing the painting. He worked day and
night. He did not sleep for many nights thinking how he could
make the painting better. Finally, after three months, he said that
the painting was ready!

Everyone was curious about how the painter made the king’s
painting beautiful. They thought, "What will happen if the king
doesn’t like the painting?" But, when the painter showed the
painting, all were surprised.

In the painting, the king was sitting on a horse, on the one-leg
side He was holding his bow and aiming the arrow with his one
eye closed. The king was very happy to see the painting. The
king gave him a great reward.
