cake. Besides, we eat a
lot of fresh, green and
leafy vegetables and yams
which are good for health.
My sister prepares yummy
snacks of different yams.

In this season, a lot of
fresh fruits such as apples,
oranges, kiwis, berries, etc.
are available. It is said that
we should eat lots of fresh
fruits to keep our body hydrated and energetic all day long.

Though we enjoy this season a lot, it is very difficult for many
people who do not have enough clothes to put on and enough
food to eat. Every year, when my parents get new clothes for us,
we give away some of our old clothes to the needy ones in the
city. This makes them happy.

I enjoy my favourite season of winter spending time with family

and playing indoor games with my sister.

Water, Ice and Snow

One day, Miss Thapa said to her class, “Please draw a picture
of water.” Samir drew a picture of a lake. Alina drew a picture
of a cloud. Mohan drew a picture of falling snow. Asha drew a
picture of ice cubes.

Miss Thapa looked
at all the pictures
and smiled. “All of
you are right,” she
said. “These are all
pictures of water.
Let’s find out some
more.”

Water is found in
three forms, or
states. Water can be
a gas, a liquid, or a
solid. Heat causes water to change from liquid to a gas. However,
it is still water.

When water is a gas, it is called water vapour. Steam is one kind
of water vapour. There is water vapour in the air you breathe out.

Liquid water is the water that flows in rivers. We swim in liquid
water. We wash with liquid water. We also drink liquid water.
Liquid water fills the oceans. Liquid water covers two-thirds of
the earth’s surface.

When does water freeze?

108 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

Water freezes when its
temperature is 0° Celsius (32°
Fahrenheit) or lower. It is still
water, but it is solid.

Clouds are made up of tiny
droplets of water, tiny pieces of
ice, or both. One kind of icy
cloud is like feathers in the
sky.

Ice and snow are two forms
of solid water. A snowflake is
made up of many tiny crystals
of ice. Snow falls from clouds.
Sleet and hail are also forms
of ice that fall from clouds.

Frozen water takes other forms, too. The frost that forms on
windows is one kind of frozen water. Icicles are another form.

Where is ice throughout the year?

The Arctic and the Antarctic are English Book - 3 109
two parts of the world where
there is always ice and snow.
Even the oceans freeze in those
areas.

Antarctica is a place at the
southern tip of the world. It is
always icy and cold there. The
snow never melts. The layers
of snow change into ice. These

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

layers of ice are called ice sheets.

The ice sheets become thicker and
thicker. This has happened for
thousands of years. Today some of
the ice sheets are about one mile
(1.61 km) thick. The ice sheets are
even thicker in some places.

A Farmer's Old Apple Tree

Once upon a time, there lived English Book - 3 131
a farmer in a village. He had a
big garden that had an old apple
tree and other plants, trees and
beautiful flowers. When the
farmer was a little boy, he spent
much of his time playing with
the apple tree. Those days, the
apple tree had given the best
apples to him. However, as time
passed, the apple tree became
old and stopped bearing fruits.

Now that the farmer was not

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

getting any apples from the tree, he decided that the tree was
useless. Therefore, he decided to cut the tree and use its wood to
make some new furniture. He felt that since the tree was old and
huge, it would make great furniture. He forgot that as a boy, he
had spent his entire childhood climbing the tree and eating its
apples.

Now, the apple tree was home to several little animals. This
included squirrels, sparrows and huge variety of birds and
insects. When the farmer took his axe and began chopping the
tree, all the little animals came down at once.

They all began to plead with the farmer. They gathered round
the farmer and said, "Please don’t cut the tree. We used to play
with you when you were small, under this tree. This is our home
and we have no other place to go."

The farmer was adamant
in his decision of cutting
down the tree.

"Please don’t chop and
destroy my home and
kids," cried the squirrel.

"Please don’t chop and
destroy my nest," cried
the little bird.

"Please don’t cut the
apple tree," cried the
grasshopper.

The farmer, however,

132 English Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

forgot his childhood and his animal friends. He began to chop the
tree harder. All the little animals became desperate and wanted
to protect the apple tree at any cost.

The little animals said, "We'll sing for you when you are toiling
away in the fields. We will look after your little boy. He will not
cry but instead will be happy and entertained. You will like our
songs and will not feel tired.

However, their cries for help fell on deaf ears. Despite all their
requests, the farmer continued to chop down the tree.

All of a sudden, he noticed something shiny. On observing it, he
realized that it was a beehive, full on honey. He tasted a piece of
it. The taste of the honey woke up the little boy in him. Suddenly
his memories of his childhood came back. The honey tasted so
good that he wanted more. It brought a sense of happiness to
him. He smiled and exclaimed, "This tastes amazing."

Realizing the change in the farmer's attitude, the little animals
spoke in unison. The bee said, "I will always provide you with
sweet honey." The squirrel said, "I will share any amount of nuts
that you want." The birds cried, "We will sing as many songs as
you want."

Finally, the farmer realized the apple tree was not that fruitless.
The little boy in him saved the apple tree.

He threw away the axe and said to the little creatures, "I promise
that I will never cut this tree. I've realized my mistake and you all
can now live in peace and harmony."

The little creatures thanked the bee very much. They happily
lived there forever.

Tihar. It is also called Laxmi Puja as it coincides with the day for
worship of goddess Laxmi. The cow is worshipped in the morning

the Goddess of Wealth. People believe that worshipping her will
bring good fortune to them.

The fourth day is

Goru Tihar and the
ox is worshipped on

brothers. A small
puja is done to please Yama on the fifth day of Tihar. It is done by
the sisters praying for the long life of their brothers.

On the Laxmi Puja day, the women of the house keep fast and
prepare selroti for the goddess. Houses and temples are decorated
with the rows of light. People usually light the traditional Nepali
lamp of twisted cotton wick in a small clay bowl of mustard oil.
It is called paalaa. Also items such as achar, kheer and other sweets
are prepared. Girls play Bhaili in the evening. They go door to
door singing the Bhailini song and blessing the house. People

The last day of Tihar
is called Bhai Tihar
which is commonly
known as Bhai Tika.
On this day, sisters
pray for the long
and prosperous life
of their brothers.
According to the
legend, there was a
girl named Yamuna. Her brother was very ill and about to die. One
day, Yama, the God of Death, came to take her brother with him.
She requested Yama for some time to worship her brother. Yama
granted her this wish. Then the girl performed a long ceremony
for her brother and Yama. Seeing this, Yama became pleased with
the sister. He promised her not to take her brother’s soul until the
offerings remained fresh. As the turf grass (dubo) and the flowers
remained fresh until next Bhai Tika, Yama couldn’t take him.
She began to perform the puja every year and Yama granted her
brother a long life. Since then, every sister performs this puja for
her brother’s long and healthy life.

Tihar is celebrated with happiness and lights. This festival brings
families together. They light lamps and eat delicious meals. Girls
play Bhailini on Laxmi Puja and boys play Deusi on Bhai Tika and
