A Man with Eleven Jobs

Do you think you are busy? Perhaps
you think so because you have to go
to school and do a lot of homework.

What about your father? How busy is
he? Perhaps he doesn’t have time to
help you with your homework. How
many jobs does your father do? Two?
Three? Or four? But today you are
reading about a person who has eleven jobs.

Mr Gray Smith is a very busy man. He is 50 years old and he has eleven
jobs. He is a postman, a school bus driver, a boatman, a fisherman,
a shopkeeper, a teacher, a salesperson at a petrol pump, a priest, a
waiter, a cook and a taxi driver. He and his wife, Mrs Martina Smith,
have a shop and a hotel.

Mr Smith lives and works on the island of Gigha. Gigha is a small
island in Scotland. Very few people live there. The island is famous for
its beauty. About one hundred tourists come to the island every day.

Every working day, Mr Smith gets up at half past five. He makes tea for
his hotel guests first. Then he makes breakfast for them. At 8:00 am, he
drives the school bus. At nine o’clock, he collects letters from the post
office. He delivers the letters to the people. He works at a petrol station

for two hours, from twelve to two o’clock. Then he takes his boat and
goes fishing. He spends two hours in the sea boating and fishing. He
comes home and prepares fish for his guests at the hotel. Then he goes
to the church in the evening at around six thirty. He is the priest there.
After he comes home in the evening, he helps his wife Martina in the

shop.

At the weekend, he doesn’t go to school and post office. He works as a
taxi driver then.

holidays. We don’t like watching television. In the evenings, Martina
makes supper and I teach a group of children. We go to bed at 10:00 pm.
Perhaps our life isn’t very exciting, but we like it. Hard work always
