“Wow! Sports Day tomorrow!” Krish said excitedly. He
was sure to win the race this time too. There was going to be a
sack-race in the field for grade three. Last year too, Krish own
the race and had won a prize of a hundred rupees.

Rabina was also
willing to participate
in the race. Rabina
wanted to try this
time, too. She had
not won the race yet.
Last year, Krish had
beaten her by thirty
seconds. It was just a
two hundred meters
track.

During the break
Krish came along with his friends and started teasing, “Are
you going to run this year, too? Girls cannot win me. You
better quit!”

“I am taking part whether I win or lose,” Rabina said. “I
love playing games.”

They giggled, “We saw you running last year. Hahaha.”

Rabina said nothing. As she went home, she asked mother
to give her a sack. She did not say anything about Krish but
she practised running wearing a sack.

Next day, the field was set. Children were in the ground.

They were all set. There were five competitors in the final. All
were wearing sacks. The whistle blew. Krish started hopping
with higher jumps. Rabina started well but not too fast. Krish
was halfway form the starting line. He wanted to check
Rabina. She was hopping not much far behind. As he turned
back, he lost his balance and fell.

Then, Rabina took a lead. As he rose and started again,
Rabina was almost to the finish line. The timer was running.
It was showing 78, 79, 80, 83, 85. Rabina crossed the finish
line. Krish was there after three seconds. He completed in 88
seconds. Roshan came third in 90 seconds.

Krish was not happy. He looked sad. His last year’s record
was 84 seconds. He realized he lost the race only because he
wanted to look back.

There was prize distribution finally. Rabina was given the
first prize. She got one hundred rupees cash.

Next day, she brought a packet of chocolates and distributed
among her friends. She gave to Krish too. She smiled and said,
“I was a competitor in the field but I am your friend, Krish.”

Uma’s Birthday

Do you celebrate your birthday?
What do you do on your birthday?

Uma was having her birthday party at the park.
She was turning eight. Her parents and her
sister went to the park early to set up. One good
thing about the park was that there were a lot
of tables. There was also a covered pavilion, in
case it rained. Besides, there were slides and lots
of playing areas.

They covered tables with pink and red
tablecloths. They put out napkins, cups, forks, and plates. Then they
put out the food, but left it covered until later. Dad made sure there was
enough ice-cream and juice. It was going to be hot, so people needed

juice! Finally, they hung some decorations.

Mom set out some activities, like colouring and small games, before
people arrived. There was a giant cardboard castle for people to colour
with crayons and markers. It was going to be great.

Before everyone came they had to do one more thing. In the middle of
park there was a temple. A priest was called for. All of them went to
the temple and they worshipped. The priest offered tika to all.

By then, everyone
started to show up.
Gifts in pretty bags
and boxes started
to pile up on the
table. Everybody
congratulated Uma
on her birthday.
Then, kids started to
play with a football
and with the games.

Everyone started to eat, too. There were paneer curry, fried chicken,
salad, chips, and lots of things!

After everyone ate, it was time for a piñata (say /pinˈjɑːtə/) or clay-jar
breaking. The kids took turns hitting the piñata with a stick until it
broke. Uma took the first turn, then the other boys and girls tried. When
candy and toys fell out, everyone grabbed as many as they could!

Finally, it was time to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and cut cakes. Uma cut
the cake with a knife and everyone cheered. Meantime, she opened the
presents. She got lots of nice toys and clothes, and she was very happy.

When the party was over, Uma was a little sad, because it was over, but
very happy. She started to wonder what NEXT year would be like…

Buddha

Gautam. Sidhhartha Gautam was born the Buddha means? It

man. Then people called him the Buddha.
Buddha taught people how to be happy.
Buddhists all over the world follow his
teaching. They take him as a great
teacher.

Buddha was born in Lumbini. It is in
Kapilavastu district of Nepal. He was
the son of King Suddhodhana and
Queen Maya Devi. Queen Maya Devi
died after her son was born. King
Suddhodhan and his other wife Maha
Prajapati raised Buddha. The life of
Buddha was happy in the palace. His
father didn’t let him go out and be among the poor people. He
married a princess. He had a son, Rahul.

One day, disobeying his father, Buddha came out of the palace. He
was on a chariot passing through a street. He saw a sick man, an
old man and a dead person. Buddha became very sad to see them.
He asked himself, “Why do people become sick? Why do people
become old? Why do people die?” Then he saw a holy man. The
holy man was dressed in rags but was happy.

Buddha also wanted to be like the holy man. He left his wife,

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Skills Book - 3 177

his son and even his palace.
From that day, he started
to look for the answers to
his difficult questions. He
wanted to find truth and
happiness.

After leaving his palace, he
cut his hair. He left his fine
clothes and wore rags. He
became a monk. He joined some holy teachers for some time.
Then, for five years, he lived in the forest. He lived a very difficult
life there. He didn’t eat much. He didn’t sleep much.

One night Buddha was
sitting under a Bodhi tree. He
had a different experience.
He found what he was
looking for. He found that
people are never happy.
They are sad because they
are greedy. They always
want more than what they
have.

Buddha then started
teaching. He gave some
rules for life. Buddha taught
us to speak the truth, do well to other people, think good of other
people, not to be greedy and eat only healthy food. He told people
not to kill any animals.

Buddha taught people for forty-five years. He died at the age of
eighty.

• Which food item do you eat most often?
• Do you eat fruits, milk and meat often?
• Do you eat healthy food?

We eat food to get energy. To get energy, we need the nutrients in our
food and drinks. There are five important groups of nutrients. They
are carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, calcium and sugar. However,
we do not eat all the types of foods in equal amount. Look at the food
pyramid.

The items that are at the bottom of the pyramid are carbohydrates.

198 English Skills Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

Then, come vitamins and minerals. After that, we need protein and
calcium. We need fat and sugar too but not much.

Carbohydrates
Bread, rice, chapati, pasta
Carbohydrates give us energy.

Vitamins and Minerals
Fruits: apple, oranges, grapes, bananas
Vegetables: green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, carrot, radish peas
Vitamins and minerals are important for a healthy body.

Calcium
Yoghurt, milk
Calcium makes our bones and teeth strong.

Proteins
Chicken, mutton, fish, eggs
We need to eat protein because it makes us strong and build muscles.

Fat and sugar
Fat: cheese, oil, ghee or butter
Sugar: Cake, drinks like coke or packed juice
Fat and sugar give us energy but a lot of sugar is bad for us.
Along with all food items, we must drink enough water. Good sleep
and exercises are also needed to be healthy.
