When you write about similarities between two people or things or
places, you can start your paragraph like the following.
• Kathmandu and Biratnagar are similar in many ways.
• Your bag and my bag have three similarities.
• There are a lot of similarities between your father and my father.
• Vijaya sir and Bhanu sir are similar in several ways.
A paragraph has three parts. Mostly we begin our paragraph
with a topic sentence. Then you need to support the topic
sentence with details. For an example, if your topic sentence is
“Kathmandu and Biratnagar are similar in many ways.”, you
have to find the details that are similar.
both are metropolitan cities, crowded, big markets in both,
both get many visitors both have an airport
Then, you need a concluding sentence. (amazing cities)

Kathmandu and Biratnagar
Kathmandu and Biratnagar Biratnagar
are similar in many ways. First Kathmandu
both cities are very crowded.
Kathmandu is the most crowded
city in Nepal and Biratnagar is the
second most crowded. Secondly,
they both get many visitors.
People from different parts of the
country come to Kathmandu as it
is the capital and has big markets.
Similarly, people visit Biratnagar
as there are many industries
and markets. Likewise, both
Kathmandu and Biratnagar have
an airport. Like Kathmandu,
Biratnagar is also a metropolitan
city of our country. I think both
cities are amazing.
Say how two things are similar or same:
Use both : Both Kathmandu and Biratnagar are crowded.
They both get many visitors.
They are both metropolitan cities.
Use like : Like Kathmandu, Biratnagar is also a metropolitan
city.
Use Similarly, / Likewise,:
Many people come to Kathmandu as it is the capital.

Pokhara
Have you been to Pokhara? When did you go? Who did you go with?
Pokhara is a clean and beautiful city. Among the six metropolitan cities
of our country, Pokhara is one which is always crowded by tourists or
visitors. It lies in Western Nepal. It is the second biggest city in our country
after Kathmandu. If we consider area, Pokhara is the biggest city. Its area
is 464.28 square kilometres. More than 400, 000 people live here.
Pokhara is known for
its beauty. The view of
mountains around it
makes it really beautiful.
Wonderful Phewa Lake is in
Pokhara. We can also see the
beautiful mountains from
here. The visitors or tourists
go boating in the lake.
There is a small island in the middle
of Phewa Lake. On the island, there
is Tal Barahi temple. The temple
is called Tal Barahi as it is in the
middle of the lake. The devotees or
worshippers go there on boats to
worship Goddess Barahi. Besides,
Bindhabasini temple is another
famous temple in Pokhara. It lies near Bagar.
118 English Skills Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
Pokhara is also known as city of seven lakes as it has seven popular
lakes. Among them Phewa, Begnas and Rupa lakes are very popular
among the tourists.
In addition to the lakes, Devi’s
Fall, Bat Cave, Mahendra Cave and
Gupteshwor temple inside a cave
are interesting places to visit. On
sunny days, we can see rainbow
above the Devi’s Fall. The most
interesting thing about Devi’s Fall is
that water falls in a hole in the earth.
Inside Gupteshwor, you will find a
beautiful Shiva temple inside a cave. Another
interesting place is the Seti River. The water
of such a big river flows in the deep cut in the
ground. It is too narrow and too deep.
In Pokhara people are friendly. They welcome
the visitors happily. Mostly, Gurungs,
Magars, Brahmin, Chhetris and Newars live
here. Moreover, there is a small village of
Muslim community in Miya Patan. Around
Batulechaur, there is a small village of Gandharbas, traditional singers.
Well, Pokhara is not far from
Kathmandu. We can reach there by
plane within half an hour. If we travel
by bus, it takes about five to six hours.
If you like, you can go to Pokhara in
the coming vacation.

The Selfish Giant
Adapted from the story by Oscar Wilde
It happened many years ago. The Selfish Giant lived in a house with a
big garden. His garden was very beautiful.
One day he went to his friend, the Vasme Giant’s home. Every afternoon,
when school was over, the children came to the garden and played. It
was a wonderful, big, green garden. There were beautiful flowers in
it, and twelve tall trees. Birds would love sitting and singing in these
trees. The children often stopped playing and listened to them. They
often said, 'We're very happy here.'
124 English Skills Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
For seven years, the Giant stayed at his friend’s house. Then, one day,
he came home. He found all the children playing in the garden. He
angrily shouted, ‘What are you doing here?’
Scared of the Giant, the children ran away. The Giant again shouted,
'It's my garden. People must understand! And nobody can play here -
only me!'
Then, he put a wall around the garden, with a big notice on it.
No children!
He was a very selfish
Giant.
The children were very
sad because they had
no place to play. They
didn’t like playing in
the road.
After school, they
walked around the wall and they looked at it. And they remembered
the beautiful garden behind it, too.
Then the spring came. All over the country there were spring flowers
and little birds in the green trees.
But in the Selfish Giant's garden, it was still winter.
The birds didn’t want to sing in it, because there were no children. The
trees there remained dark. One morning one beautiful flower put its
head up out of the ground. But it saw the notice, and was very sorry for
the children. Then it hid back under the ground and slept again.
Nobody was happy about this. Only the Snow and the Frost were
Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Skills Book - 3 125
excited. They cried, 'Spring doesn't come to this garden! So we can live
here all year! Ha! Ha!'
The Snow put her cold, white coat on the ground, and the Frost put
silver on the dark trees.
They called the North Wind from the Himalayas, 'You must stay with
us!'
So he too came making lots of noise up and down the garden, and he
moved things here and there all day.
The North Wind said 'This is wonderful! Let's ask the Hail here, too!'
The Hail happily came. Every day he hit on the roof of the Giant's big,
old house. He never stopped hitting it noisily. Cold smoke came from
his mouth when he opened it.
The Selfish Giant sat at his window. He looked out at his cold, white
garden. He thought, 'I don't understand, why the spring's very late this
year. When is it coming? And when will this winter go?'
The spring and the summer never came to the Giant's garden. The
126 English Skills Book - 3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
Autumn brought juicy red and golden apples to most people's gardens.
However, she brought nothing to the Giant's garden. The Autumn said,
'I don't give to selfish people.’
Therefore, it is always winter in the Giant’s garden. The North Wind,
the Hail, the Frost and the Snow would run around in it.
One morning, some strange things happened. The Giant was about to
wake up and he heard some music.
He cried 'That's beautiful! But what is it?' A little bird was singing near
his window. After the long winter in his garden, there was some spring
music. The Giant was puzzled for he had forgotten the sounds of birds
as well.
The Hail had stopped hitting the roof, and the North Wind was quiet.
Suddenly a wonderful scent came to the Giant through his window.
He thought, ‘The spring is here finally.' When he came to his window
Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Skills Book - 3 127
to see outside, he saw children playing happily in the garden. The
children had come into the garden through a small hole in the wall. The
children were sitting in the branches. The trees were happy because
the children were back. They were full of flowers.
The birds were also singing happily in the sky. The flowers were coming
out of the ground and laughing.
But far across the garden - in one corner - it wasn’t spring. A young
boy was standing there. There was frost and snow on this tree, and he
could not get up into it. So he was crying.
When the Giant saw all these, he came down and helped the small
child to climb the tree. Then the tree gave wonderful flowers. Then he
knew that the spring came with the children only. Thus, he broke the
walls and welcomed the children. After school every day, the children
came to the garden and played with the Giant. He was no more selfish.
After many years, when he died, his soul was taken to heaven by god.
