Last evening, I was watching my favourite channel on TV.An interesting
story was being shown. They saidAesop told this story first. Do you know
whoAesop was? He was a great storyteller from Greece. Here’s the story
now.
Once there lived a boy in a village. He used to graze his sheep near
the jungle. Like every other day, he took his sheep near the jungle. He
climbed a tree and looked
around. He could see far
away.
One day, he was sitting in
a tree and watching over
his sheep. The sheep were
grazing quietly. He saw
some farmers on a farm a
little far away. They were
digging the field. He thought
of making them fools. He
shouted, “Wolf! Wolf!”
The farmers did not hear
him. So, he cried even louder. “Help! Help! A wolf is eating my sheep.”
The farmers heard his cries and stopped their work. They ran towards
the boy. The boy was sitting in the tree. He was laughing there. There
was no wolf. The farmers told him not to do so again.
Next day too, the boy took his sheep to the same place. Again he
climbed the tree. The sheep were grazing. The sun was shining.
The farmers were working in the field. Everything was fine. He again
thought of playing a trick on the farmers. He shouted, “Help! Help!
A wolf is eating my sheep.” The farmers came. They saw the sheep
grazing. The boy was laughing. The farmers warned him not to do so
again.

Third day too, the boy
came with his sheep.
The sun was shining.
The boy was sitting on
a tree. Out of the bush,
there came a big wolf.
The wolf started to kill his
sheep. The boy started
crying. He shouted,
“Help! Help! A wolf is
killing my sheep.” The
farmers heard him. They didn’t go to help him this time. They thought
that the boy was tricking them again. The wolf ate all his sheep. He
came home crying.

Writing
25 Read parts 1 and 2 of ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’.
Then write part three.
The Hare and the Tortoise
Part 1
There once was a
speedy Hare who
bragged about how
fast he could run.
Tired of hearing him
boast, the Tortoise
challenged him to a
race. All the animals
in the forest gathered
to watch.
The Hare ran down
the road for a while
and then paused to
rest. He looked back
at the tortoise and cried out, "How do you expect to win this race when
you are walking along at your slow, slow pace?"
The Hare stretched himself out alongside the road and fell asleep,
thinking, "There is plenty of time to relax."
210 English Skills Book - 4 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
The Tortoise walked and walked, never ever stopping until he came
to the finish line.
The animals who were watching cheered so loudly for Tortoise that
they woke up the Hare. The Hare stretched, yawned and began to run
again, but it was too late. Tortoise had already crossed the finish line.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.
Part 2
After being defeated by the tortoise, the hare did some soul-searching.
He knew that though he had tried hard in the beginning, he was not
consistent, and had grown overconfident. He was determined to undo his
mistakes, and invited tortoise for another race. This time, the rabbit was
careful to run the whole distance, and of course, emerged the winner.
Moral: Fast and consistent may be better than slow and steady.

15 Read about a documentary on an elephant farm in
Chitwan.
Do you watch TV programmes about animals? Why or
why not?
Last month the Discovery Channel filmed six children
at an elephant farm in Chitwan. What did they do? Ten-
year-old Ramesh told us about the trip.
We flew to Bharatpur with the film crew. Then we took a taxi and
went to Sauraha. After keeping our bags at a hotel, we walked to the
elephant farm.
The farm has baby elephants and mother elephants. The elephants
are tied with iron chains. The caretakers have a small house to live in.
Sometimes, wild elephants come there. The caretakers chase them
away with the help of the elephants on the farm.
When we reached there, the
caretakers were feeding the
elephants. The tourists were
taking photos. The guides
were telling them about the
animals. We just saw the
place that day and came
back to the hotel. We were
not allowed to go near the
elephants for safety reasons.
Next day, along with the film crew, we went to the farm. We put up our
tent near caretakers’ cottage. It was really scary! One boy didn’t like
snakes and the cameraman was scared of spiders. On the first night,
I was unable to sleep as I could listen to the sounds of wild animals. A
tiger was roaring just near our tent.
After five days, we finished our programme. It was a great experience.
We had a lot of fun. I can’t wait to watch the programme on TV!

Hanuman Dhoka Palace Museum
This Saturday, I went to visit a museum with my mother. A museum is
a place where old and very important things are kept. We went to the
Hanuman Dhoka Palace Museum. Some people also call it Hanuman
Dhoka Museum. It is called Hanuman Dhoka because there is a
statue of Monkey God (Hanuman) in front of the main palace gate.
The palace is located at Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu.
I was amazed to see such a great palace. My mother said it is spread over
five acres of land. It is about five times bigger than our school compound.
The museum is also very big. It was the palace of the Malla kings of
Kathmandu. Some Shah kings also lived in the palace until 1886 AD. After
that, they shifted to Narayanhiti Royal Palace, which is also a museum now.
Hanuman Dhoka is used for various important ceremonies.
I saw many things inside the museum. I got much information about
Nepal and the Shah kings. The displays included photos of the kings,
their collections, awards and honours they received, weapons, thrones,

newspaperclippings,giftstheyreceived,clothestheyworeduringspecial
occasions, etc. The museum is divided into three sections. They are:
TribhuvanMuseum,MahendraMuseumandBirendraMuseum.Allthese
sectionsarededicatedtothesethreekingsandtheirworksforthecountry.
The Tribhuvan Museum gives all the necessary information about
King Tribhuvan. I saw the items that were used by the king during
special occasions. There were
also some clothes of the late
king - the clothes he wore
during marriage, coronation,
etc. I also saw his collection of
pocket watches, stamps, coins
and other such items. I saw the
oil paintings of the king with his
father. Also the king’s bed and his office are kept in display. Close to
it were photographic instruments such as camera and lights used by
the king. I saw the guns the king used for hunting. I also saw many
photographs of the king and his works. Moreover, I saw the pictures
of the king during his visits to different places with different people. I
learned a lot about the late king Tribhuvan in the museum.
The next section is the Mahendra Museum. These two museums are
separated by Nautale Durbar. This palace section has nine floors which is
how it got its name. The Durbar has oil paintings of various Shah Kings on
each floor. We climbed a few floors but didn’t go to the top. This museum
is dedicated to late king Mahendra. There are many items here. I saw
many pictures of the king from his childhood to his death. I also saw the
collections of his musical instruments, song records, literary works by him
as well as other authors, coin collection, etc. I came to know a lot about
King Mahendra. He was a lover of literature and music. He must have had
a very interesting life. He had many hobbies as well. I also saw two thrones
in this part of the museum.
