Reading
17 Read and learn.

What do you do with your different parts of your body? What do
you do with your hands? What do you do with your legs?

If you did not have your nose, how would it be? What do you think
you could not do? How about your eyes? What happens if you hurt
your eyes?

Well, do you know we have five senses? We see, we hear, we taste,
we smell and we feel.

Which part of our body helps us to see? Yes,
they are eyes. Our eyes help us see things.
These are our sense organs. We know colours,
shape and sizes of the things when we see.

Likewise, the nose is our next sense organ. It helps us to
smell things. The good smell of flowers and tasty food
goes to our brain from our nose. Moreover, our nose helps
us breathe as well.

Similarly, the tongue is our another sense organ. Our
tongue helps us know the tastes of things we eat. With
the help of our tongue, we can say chocolate is sweet,
curry is salty, chillies are hot and a lemon is sour.

Ears are next sense organs. We can listen to what

other people say with the help of our ears. We

enjoy music with our ears. Listening to sounds can

help us be safe as well. For example, when a bus

is coming on the road, we many not see. However, when the driver

blows the horn, we notice the coming bus and give it a way.

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Skills Book - 2 55

There is still one more sense organ. It covers our body. Can you guess
what? Well, it is skin. Skin covers our body and
protects our soft body part. Moreover, it tells
us how something feels. Whether the water
is hot or cold, whether the door is smooth or
rough, we know them with the help of our
skin. We feel things with our skin.

It is Friday today. Grade two students are going out in the field.
The class is going to have fun in the ground.

Miss Honey comes to the class. “Cheer up, class!” she calls. “We
are going out today. Stand up and get ready. Close your book
and come out.”

Students start coming out. “Wait up!” Seema shouts. She is still
at the door but her friends are already with Miss Honey. Seema
starts running. There is a pillar ahead but Seema runs without
looking at it.

“Watch out, Seema!” Miss Honey shouts. “There is a pillar ahead.”

Soon all are in the ground. “Okay, everyone. Listen up! We are
going to have a race today!” Miss Honey says. “Line up here. Are
you fine? Okay, look at another line, there. The one who reaches
there first will win the race.”

Raman starts running.

“Hold on, Raman! Wait!” Miss honey says. “Listen to my whistle.
Then, run after the whistle blows.”

The whistle blows. Everybody runs. Juna reaches the line first.
She wins the race. Raman reaches second but he is not happy.

“Calm down, Raman!” says Miss Honey. “Games are fun. Enjoy it.”

Raman smiles then.

“Hurry up!” Miss Honey calls. Everyone goes to the class. Friday
is fun in grade two.

I don't know her name. She is
one of the workers in our school
canteen. I just call her sister. She is
my friend. There are several other
nice ladies in the canteen, but
Sister is nicest of all. Everyday she
smiles at me when I go through
the line. She says things like, "Hi
Sujay! Are you having a good
day?" Sister always remembers
that I like chicken the best. Whenever that is cooked in the canteen,
she gives me chicken and says, "Look, your favourite!" One day, I
tripped and dropped my tray. Food went all over the floor. I was
so nervous but Sister came and helped me. She helped me pick
up the mess and she told me, "Don't worry about it. It's okay."
That made me feel better. Another time, I was at a shop with my
mum and I saw Sister. She gave me a big hug. The reason I like
sister is because she is friendly and kind.
