English Skills Book - 5 67 8 Read and learn. The Boy Who Could Fly Once upon a time, King Minos ruled the island of Crete in ancient Greece. One day, he invited Daedalus, “Please come to Crete; I have a project for you.” Deadalus was a famous inventor. King Minos promised Daedalus of handsome pay. King Minos wanted Daedalus to build him a palace, with soaring towers and a high, curving roof. He wanted to build a maze, a complex maze in which one could go in but would not be able to come out. Actually, Minos’s wife had given birth to a very terrible creature, Minotaur. Minotaur was a half bull and half human. He enjoyed nothing but human flesh. People in Crete were terrified of this horrible creature. As the beast was very strong, none could fight against it. People asked Minos to kill the beast but he had something else in his head. He wanted Daedalus to build a maze to keep Minotaur in. There was nothing more painful than Minotaur tearing someone to eat. Minos wanted to feed Minotaur with his enemies. Daedalus did not know the king’s intention. He often asked, “Could you tell me the purpose of the palace? But the king said to him, “Build my labyrinth as I told you. I pay you to build, not to ask questions.”

68 English Skills Book - 5 So Daedalus held his tongue and set to work. When the palace was finished, he looked at it with pride, for nowhere in the world so fine. But when he found out the purpose of the maze, he was horrified. He even wanted to leave Crete and forget both the maze and the Minotaur. So, he went to King Minos and asked, “Oh, mighty King, please, give me my money; I will return my home.” “I’m sorry,” said King Minos, “I cannot let you leave Crete, Daedalus. You are the only man who knows the secret of the maze and how to escape from it. The secret must never leave this island. So, I’m afraid I must keep you and Icarus here a while longer.” “How much longer?” gasped Daedalus. “Oh—just until you die,” replied Minos cheerfully. “But never mind. I have plenty of work for a man as clever as you.” Daedalus and Icarus lived in great comfort in King Minos’s palace. But they lived the life of prisoners. Their rooms were in the tallest palace tower, with beautiful views across the island. They ate delicious food and wore expensive clothes. But at night the door of their fine apartment was locked, and a guard stood outside. It was a comfortable prison, but it was a prison, even so. Daedalus was deeply unhappy. Every day he put seed out on the windowsill, for the birds. He liked to study their brilliant colours, the clever overlapping of their feathers, and the way they soared on the sea wind. He was happy for the birds’ freedom but sad for own imprisonment. Young Icarus could not understand his father’s unhappiness. “But I like it here,” he said. “The king gives us gold and this tall tower to live in.”

English Skills Book - 5 69 Daedalus sighed. “But to work for such a wicked man, Icarus! And to be prisoners all our days! We shan’t stay. We shan’t!” “But we can’t get away, can we?” said Icarus. “How can anybody escape from an island? Fly?” Daedalus had a plan. From that day onward, when a bird came for the seed, Daedalus begged it, “Would you mind sparing one feather for me?” “Not at all,” said birds and dropped a feather for him. He collected feathers one by one and worked on them night after night. Then one morning Icarus was awakened by his father shaking his shoulder. “Get up, Icarus, and don’t make a sound. We are leaving Crete.” “But how? It’s impossible!” Icarus whispered. Daedalus pulled out wonderful wings he had made for both father and son using wax and feathers. They looked wonderful. Daedalus fixed the wings on his son’s hands and Icarus helped his father too. “Now, we can fly like birds,” Daedalus said. “I’m scared!” whispered Icarus as he stood on the narrow window ledge, his knees knocking and his huge wings drooping down behind. The lawns and courtyards of the palace lay far below. The royal guards looked as small as ants. “This won’t work!” “Courage, Son!” said Daedalus. “Keep your arms out wide and fly close to me.

70 English Skills Book - 5 Above all—are you listening, Icarus?” “Y-y-yes, Father.” “Above all, don’t fly too high! Don’t fly too close to the sun!” “Don’t fly too close to the sun,” Icarus repeated, with his eyes tight shut. Then he gave a cry as his father nudged him off the windowsill. He plunged downward. After some time, Icarus realised he was not falling. He found himself flying. “Flying! I’m flying!” he shouted. The guards looked up in astonishment, wagged their swords, and pointed and shouted, “Tell the king! Daedalus and Icarus are . . . are . . . flying away!” Flapping the wings with his hands, Icarus started flying like a bird. He went up and up. He saw the fields and streams as he had never seen them before! High up, he met an eagle. The eagle came to peck him. Thus, he went even higher, teasing the eagle, “Oh, you can’t catch me! You can’t. I bet.” “Now remember, don’t fly too high!” called Daedalus, but Icarus couldn’t hear him. I’m the first boy ever to fly! I’m making history! I shall be famous! Thought Icarus, as he flew up and up, higher and higher. At last, Icarus was looking the sun itself in the face. “Think you’re the highest thing in the sky, do you?” he taunted. “I can fly just as high as you! Higher, even!” He did not notice the drops of sweat on his forehead: He was so determined to outfly the sun. Soon after his wax softened. The wax trickled. The wax dripped. One feather fell from the wings. Then a plume of feathers scattered slowly down.

English Skills Book - 5 71 Icarus stopped flapping his wings. His father’s words came back to him clearly now: “Don’t fly too close to the sun!” Icarus tried to catch hold of the wings, but they just folded up in his hands. He plunged down and down and down and down. Soon after he got vanished into the blue sea. Icarus died. Later, when his dead body floated, Daedalus brought it to the ground and performed his last rites on an island. Now the Island where Icarus was cremated, is known as Icaria. His mother always asked him to buy bread for his family every morning. He would catch hold of a cotton bag, wear a pair of flip-flops and walk down the lane. A couple of homes away, his old neighbour, Mr. Rai would wait for him every day so that he could request Karan to buy him a newspaper. 82 English Skills Book - 5 Gauriganj, Jhapa 4 September Dear Mrs Yadav, I am writing to apologise for the terrible incident last week when I pushed poor Subarna from the school yard wall. It was an evil thing that I did and I can only ask that you and he forgive me. I can’t believe that I acted in such a horrible manner, but I was dared to do it by a friend. I understand that I was stupid and wicked to do what they said and realise my foolish actions could have been dangerous. I am sorry that Subarna had to be taken to hospital for stitches to his head and I truly hope that he will recover soon. I feel shocked that I am the reason he has been off school for over a month. I have never behaved in such a horrible manner and I never will again. Please, pass on my apologies to Subarna and tell him that I will do anything I can to help him when he comes back to school. I’ll carry his book bag and sandwiches until he is off his crutches. I’ll also write down his stories for him if his arm is still in a sling. I feel so awful just thinking about what I have done. Mum and dad grounded me for two weeks and stopped all my sweet money because of this shocking behaviour of mine. I’m glad they did. I deserved the worst punishment. Please, please try to forgive me.
